Coming from a hardcore Led Zeppelin fan, this album right here "Tapestry" is still one of my favorite albums ever and a complete masterpiece. But then, this was the 70's (early 70's) and for that decade especially, there was no shortage of albums that were masterpieces coming from some of the greatest musicians to ever grace this green earth.

Carole King wrote the song, specifically the music, one of 118 pop hits she wrote or co-wrote that made the Billboard Hot 100, one of the most prolific and great songwriters of the the last 60 years. The lyrics of this song, and on many of the songs from this era, were written by her then-husband Gerald Goffin, and you can hear in their collaboration both the deep love and painful uncertainty that marked their relationship. The two married in 1959 when he was 20 and she was 17 and pregnant and this song was their breakthrough hit, which was recorded by the Shirelles and went to number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in January 1961. The couple had day jobs to pay the rent and wrote songs together at night. If you hear a song that was sung by both Carole and others, there is a 99% chance she wrote it -- she had tried to record in the early 1960s but found no traction, so instead wrote hit after hit for others, from Aretha Franklin to James Taylor -- James returned the favor in this song by playing guitar and singing backup vocals. King (whose birth name was Carol Klein) released her debut album in 1970, then a year later, released one of the greatest albums in the history of pop-rock, Tapestry, which is filled from beginning to end with hits, In 2020, Rolling Stone ranked it 25th best of the 500 greatest albums of all time. It topped the charts for 15 consecutive weeks, which to this day, is the record for most consecutive weeks at number one by a female solo artist. It's King you hear on piano, which she started to learn at age 4, and she is masterful on the keys. In addition to James Taylor, legendary Joni Mitchell sang the backup female vocals -- if you have not heard Mitchell, you are in for a treat, and I suggest you start with A Case of You.

This came out in 1971, during the re-emergence of the "singer-songwriter"---James Taylor, Joni, Mitchell, Neil Young, Gordon Lightfoot, Harry Chapin, Jim Croce, etc.--just the performer and their instrument (usually a guitar) on stage singing the songs they wrote. It was part of what people started to call "soft rock".

Carol King started out as a songwriter back in the 60s for acts like Little Eva's "The Loco-Motion," The Drifters' "Up On the Roof," The Chiffons "One Fine Day", Aretha Franklin's "(You Make Me Feel) Natural Woman," as well as songs for The Monkees Dusty Springfield, and, even The Beatles covered her song "Chains". Her solo album "Tapestry" is considered a masterpiece.

La and Chi are polite gentlemen. Open minded and purely for the musical tapestry. I felt a little sleepy but it was nice. Carol King's big tune kinda opens like rap, "I feel the Earth, move...under my feet..." Growing up I always thought it was Aretha. Doh! It's very Aretha like though, in defense of myself.

As for recommendations, you could start with "Tapestry" - it's a 14× Platinum selling album for a reason. The song was written by Carole (music) and her then husband Gerry Goffin (lyrics). They were a professional songwriting team. This song was originally recorded by the Shirelles in 1960 / 1961 timeframe. They wrote many many hit songs. "Tapestry" included Carole's interpretation of a few of those older songs, along with contemporary songs she wrote for the album. One such re-interpretation was "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman" that Carole and Gerry wrote for Aretha Franklin.

Yes, Carole King is the songwriter, and mostly wrote hits for other people, like Little Eva, her housekeeper, if memory serves. Nice as her voice is, she's known more for her singer-songwriter chops--hearing the song performed by its composer. And for writing classic records--she wrote many hits for sixties bands, including The Monkees, and various Motown acts. Come to think of it, this song sounds like a slowed down Motown hit. That's James Taylor, playing guitar and singing harmony, another fantastic artist. She has other hits--I Feel The Earth Move is one. Thanks for exploring other classic 70s artists. Please keep it up. Peace.
