1st time chicken iwner here. I bought 4 Easter Eggers and 4 Barnavelders from my feed store - healthy - could buy any amount I wanted. All 8 are alive and well. Truly enjoying my chickens. I feed in the a.m. and check on them in the p.m. I pick them up and stroke them most days and it is pretty cool. Sweet birds.

Beautiful coop! I imagine it's a whole different ballgame when it comes to areas with winters down to -35 degrees Celsius, freezing rain and a shit load of snow, where winter dominates 5-6 months out of the year. 🇨🇦

Many people have chickens in cold climates. There are certain breeds that are cold hardy. We would advise a good, strong, large coop and our winter storm shields that keep out the snow and sleet. While extreme cold presents many challenges, there are still ways to have a happy, healthy flock. Thank you for your comments.

We decided to get chickens, started watching your videos (Video Chicken is Great!), and was inspired to follow your suggestions on building a coop. It took a while, and was a lot of work, but we now have a coop (inspired by CC) that is working great with our first batch of 7 mixed breed pullets. The requirements and features that you mention in your videos have all played out in our build - it really makes it easier and fun so far. We did purchase the hardware cloth and hemp from CC since they had the best product. Thanks for providing such valuable info for everyone.

Will you be making a video describing how you build and install the water bar by chance? We are doing a DIY setup and weren’t quite sure on the spacing of the nipples on the bar or how to setup this whole rainwater/water bar catchment system. My husband built a coop using your videos as a guide and it is the most amazing addition to our backyard. It’s not only beautiful, but it gives me a great peace of mind knowing our flock is well protected in a high predator area.

NOTE: I live in a hot climate state. I have mine in a run because of my dogs and natural predators. Have it under a shade tree with hardware cloth over it and a tarp over that. Have a box fan hooked up toward the top of the run angled down on them and one roost going 24/7. I put out a large plastic 6" deep container that I pour in 4" of water and fill plastic bottles with water and freeze them in my fridge freezer to put one in the water a couple of times a day. It's like a small cool wading pool for their feet and they love it. Keeping their feet and legs cool, keeps the whole chicken cool. Both these things are keeping my hens alive along with the shade, I think, because it is still 104 in the shade & very humid. They spend time during the day under the fan and in their "wading pool." At night they sit with their tails toward the fan on their roost. So far, so good. (Chickens can handle cold better than heat.) Good luck, friends.

Great information overall! I am building my nesting box like yours and implementing several other suggestions from your website. However, can you please elaborate on why you said Silkies are the one breed *not* to get? I know they lay small eggs and don’t like to roost. But they make great pets I hear. I think it comes down to individual priorities for their flock.
@CarolinaCoopsVideos
@CarolinaCoopsVideos Жыл бұрын
Matt's aversion to silkies is that they don't have chicken instincts. They are often prey for predators, have trouble navigating a ladder or roost bar, and don't have typical feathers to keep them warm. This is Matt's personal opinion, but he wants people to realize that they don't act like other chickens do, we aren't saying they don't make great pets, because they do.

Frizzles need a handicapped ramp to get to the roost because they don't fly very well. If at all. I have a silkie/frizzle who can "fly" maybe a foot and a half. She needs a ramp to get to the roost that I made.

Love these videos! Thanks to you and the team for doing them. I do have a question, though. I have an... let's call it an accidental rooster (little disappointed, but hey) I've only been prepared for hens. When I transition my ladies to layer feed do I need to do something different for the roo? I do free-range them, though. Just on a little puppy-picketed (grills so small not even a puppy can get through) fenced 1/2 acre. Thanks! ☺

Roosters usually require more protein and less calcium, but they can get by on layer feed, especially since you only have the one rooster.

@CarolinaCoopsVideos Жыл бұрын
@@peacetruth3074 The company isn't selling it, we are developing with them. Try putting plastic or wooden eggs in the nest boxes to encourage them to lay there. Once one chicken starts the others should follow suit. Make sure you have stringy material in there for them to build a nice nest. Hope that helps.

I totally disagree about Silky! I find them friendly & mine were big cuddlers, broody & mine were pretty quiet. I like to buy from either a local farmer, then from a well known hatchery (reputation is a big deal). 3 nest box is all i needed & id had 8 boxes & 25 hens (+/-). Nice big coop with ventilation. I only had a light & a receptacle to plug a heat plate for a waterer to put in coop in winter. I had a doggy door on coop & my guard goat would get in it in inclement weather, also had guard geese! My coop was in a huge yard with good wire. Because my pigs shared the yard & goat too, they ate snakes & rodents. They also were loud if any predator tried to get in. I would open yard gate open only if i was home, to help protect my babies! My dogs & cats never bugged my birds.
