Thanks for the video. So glad to see Saluda wasn’t damaged. My husband and I were just there on our anniversary. Bought ourselves a present in that General store!! We live in Brevard up near Connestee and 276 has been closed for 10 days but the DOT has done a great job to get it opened again. So thankful for all the help that me are getting. I’m sure they will get to 176 soon.

Me too. Ridden it hundreds of times. Stretches of this look irreparable unless many millions spent cutting back into the mountain.

We always enjoyed going to Landrum, SC then heading over to Tryon, NC and stopping at the antique malls, heading over to Saluda and on to Flat Rock and over to Hendersonville! We loved staying in the beautiful mountains of NC and especially loved Lake Lure and was so heartbreaking to see all the destruction of Chimney Rock and Lake Lure! It breaks our hearts to see the pain all of these mountain people have gone through and will continue to go through! Prayers for all those affected by the hurricane and those that have lost love ones🙏🙏🙏

One low point in Hendersonville is the intersection of Greenville Hwy & Spartanburg Hwy. The Fresh Market area was terribly flooded & will take a while to clean out. Harris Teeter parking lot flooded like never before, I saw video of a small car almost covered by water. Clean up there will take some time. Of course, Haus Heidelberg flooded.

Thank you! That's an interesting tour of the area, and answers some of the questions I've had. Also confirms how fortunate Henderson County has been relative to Buncombe and some other counties. Have not had time to drive down past Saluda yet. I would not call Hwy 176 "destroyed" - but definitely took a lot of damage. Well within the capacity of NCDOT to repair - I've been amazed at how quickly the state has moved on road repairs. It may sound odd, but this video is actually encouraging - the reality looks a lot less severe than some of the CRAZY rumors floating around. (That's true almost everywhere, I have found.) Thank you for sharing! Here on Day 21 I'm feeling positive about all the progress we've made: 100% water system restoration; 100% power restoration; schools open; almost all roads open; stores open, getting back to business; all public services like banks and post offices operating normalls. Internet restoration has been lagging, but I even got that today. :) The Reedypatch Creek / Hickory Nut Gorge area is still struggling, but even there progress has been made. We're coming back! Thank you for sharing about the Henderson/Polk views.

I don't know about that. They still haven't repaired the bridge that starts out Howard Gap road. There's a lot of repairs left over from the last heavy rain we had 5 years ago. I'd hate to think what the waterfall over white oak mountain road looks like now and how often do we have to keep maintaining and repairing the old routes in very venerable places? You can look at the rocky bluffs over a road and understand it's just a matter of time...

I appreciate the drive down 176. My daughter's family lives in Saluda and I have driven 176 many times. What a shame! My daughter works in emergency management in Hendersonville and was there during the storm. Meanwhile her husband and my two-year-old grandson were riding out the storm at home, unable to communicate with my daughter. During the panic, my grandson broke his leg. They luckily were able to evacuate down I26to a hospital in Charlotte after the storm passed. It was a nightmare scenario for them.

Anyone who sympathizers with this needs to send money. Ssying that you sympathize means nothing. There are many great charities that can help the people who need it most.
@mikesage157828 күн бұрын
Carring and sympathizing doesnt mean people have money to send to folks when they are struggling to pay there own bills in todays world...or maybe cant. I make decent money and still struggle some times. Prayers and kind words can help peoples mind without money. Even though we are out here clearing roads. Helping. Not all can.

The lost lives and damage is so sad. You passed by my brothers house on Hwy. 280, spent a lot of time at my uncles place in Turkey Pen where you have your place.
@kawikakinipopo21 күн бұрын
We're up in Avery County. Things aren't great here. Our house survived but we were some of the lucky ones. Lotsa folks around here lost everything--houses washed down the river etc. , and the businesses that employed lots of these folks are wiped out so unemployment is going to add to the misery. Thanks to FEMA, National Guard, local and not local charitable organizations--they've all been great. Can't say enough positive things for those folks. It's easy to see a lot of this as vacation homes wiped out, and it has been that. But there are a whole lot of folks who have lived their lives here, as with generations before, who have been left with nothing and nowhere to go. Pray for these people.

I'm in Saluda while watching this. I work delivery for Amazon, live in Tryon, I take these roads all the time. I was wondering about 176 because I-26 is overcrowded with frantic heros in pick up trucks racing to fix everything for us. I mean it's downright deadly right now.
@mikegathercole21 күн бұрын
Yeah so I just watched the rest of the video between Saluda and Tryon. That's the road I took all the time. Going to be a long time before they can fix that. I think that will make a very good bike trail.

Thank you for sharing! Please take good care of yourselves. 🫂 🙏 Is there any talk yet about all those landslides? Was it the slope or type of soil that caused some of those slippages? I understand some were caused by just too much rain, (being near a creek, etc...) but others seem like a mystery why there was a slide.
@sowi-reeikuddye573226 күн бұрын
The ground was saturated, so all the water was washing down from higher elevations and it was a 25 foot surge. There's no way there wouldn''t be soil, boulders, trees, like a snowball, it picked up more all the way down. Simply a matter of fast erosion combined with gravity.
@debbiemcclelland350726 күн бұрын
@@sowi-reeikuddye5732 Wow, thank you! I didn't realize the 25' surge started up that high. I'd thought it was a combination of smaller amounts near the peaks that merged down at the river. It's horrific, no matter how it happened. Praying for all affected. 🙏🙏🙏😢🫂
