You made a lot of good points in this video. Some hides on the warmer end would be good also. And like you mentioned, they really do best as outside pets in a secure enclosure. If you make more videos please keep emphasizing that people buy captive bred or get box turtles from reputable rescues. My hatchlings spend their second winter on in a modified refrigerator.

This is an excellent tutorial. I also use a mixing tub for a hatchling. They're $5 at Home Depot for one this size and $13 for one almost twice as big. I use clay saucers for feeding and soaking/drinking water. It helps trim their beak and nails. This container in the masonry dept is the ticket though. For so many things. It's good since they can't see through it. Great video and informative. Thank you!

@@williamlewis3163 it's best to find a reputable breeder since they should never be taken from the wild. They have a homing instinct and will forever try to get back to where they were born. There are obvious conservation concerns and laws by state but that wanting to go home thing really hits a nerve with me personally. Seems even worse for an animal than a human because they don't understand so it's cruel. From what I've read they don't care if they have company or not and can even be aggressive with others. Turtle fight club.. yikes. They're fine alone but I certainly understand wanting at least a pair. I only want 50, I don't want to be greedy.

shannon ohanlon I absolutely love turtles. They can actually learn there name. (I think so anyways) And they always give you the attention once they get bigger and warm up to you. They have great personalities. I had one that every time I would talk say his name he would sit and stare at me. But if I don’t say his name he wouldn’t even pay any attention to me unless I had food. It was quit creepy but i loved it.

I have three baby box turtles in the inside enclosure and when I put meal worm pupils in there a few months ago the ones they didn’t eat turned into Beatles then the Beatles bread and laid eggs and now my enclosure is full of mealworms I mean there’s tons of them so my turtles just dig around and eat them when they want and the eat the Beatles also

Being a juvenile box turtle they are constantly found around or near the waters edge under leaves since they are very vulnerable at that age. He loves the leaves he is always trying to go under them and use them as cover he prefers them over going under the log shelter

I do realize this was posted 2 years ago lol but if anyone sees this, my husband found a beautiful box turtle in the road on his way home from work, got it and brought it home to our daughter, I've bought a really big box/container, some food and water dishes and food (freeze dried mealworms) my question is does the box turtle require water in his tank? Like standing water with a filter and stuff? I looked him up and he's a northeastern box turtle, his shell is like a light and dark brown with tan or yellowish looking spots and his front legs and face are all dark with beautiful bright yellow spots. Im a not a reptile person but the little guy is beautiful lol but any information or advice from experienced turtle owners will be very much appreciated! Thank you in advance!

Box turtles eat lot of fruit and vegetables, they also need a little bowl of water that they can fit into that’s very shallow just so they can drink out of it

By the looks of the size of the boxy he seems to be less than a year old yearlings and younger box turtles don’t bask they don’t even come out into the sun light and it’s been proven they do not need UVB for the first year to year and a half

sorry i am late but me and my family just thinking of get 2 eastern box turtle so we have a very big area so we can put 2 box turtle the person that wanted to give us the turtle they say they like to flight on each other idk if that a good thing bc they r both males so idk if it good for them fight like everyday

if your box turtles are fighting i would separate them into different enclosures! from what i know it's not good for them and they could hurt each other + are stressing each other out i believe doing more research on box turtle husbandry would be beneficial for you! good luck :)

I have one and it's in a 10 gallon fish tank. She's not really eating anymore (had her for about 3 months and this just started) do they need water to swim in? Mine likes to play I need water bowl. What can I feed her

They eat worms, grub worms, etc but they also like their veggies. You can go to petco and get the canned food and the pellets as well.

If you don’t have water for her, that’s a problem. Also you should not have a turtle in a 10 gallon tank (especially not a female). It is generally a rule of thumb to have 10 gallons Per square inch of shell.
