Not complaining … it’s proper caring for a red foot they’re from South America 80-90 % humidity they thrive in . Not a bedroom room with little to 0 humidity. Also I doubt that little lamp is providing the heat he needs. They need constant temps of 80-85 degrees. And CHE work better because at night they need full darkness. You can continue this way it might work, but be a lot better for your young tortoise in a proper environment close to where they are from(jungles of SA) I recommend tortoise forum. So what is the point of the UV light? I am interested in owning a tortoise, and I know they are cold blooded so they need light to get heat. But why can I not only use a regular lightbulb? What is the purpose of the UV light?
@ohkaykaykayla28914 жыл бұрын
They can get metabolic bone disease. It needs to mimic the sunlight, a regular light bulb won’t do. UVB Lighting is essential for tortoises to process calcium in captivity. Without UVB lighting tortoises will develop serious health problems such as abnormal shell growth and other deformities. UVB Lighting should be left on for 10-12 hours a day and turned off at night.

Why does the 3 inches of visible space matter?
@cymbalbell12704 жыл бұрын
Because tortoises can be confused when they see through transparent materials. They'll think it's clear and try to walk through it only to find out there's an "invisible barrier" keeping him in. This can confuse the tortoise, that's why he mentioned that he'll put a tape to avoid confusion

Great video! This is my opinion and mine alone... If a person is willing to make a lifetime commitment to care for a pet with a longevity of decades, don't set up a cheap space for it, this is your newborn. Will you do the same for a human baby and just set up a cheap means to barely tend to its needs? Of course not. If a person plans on getting a pet and KNOWS what kind of animal, they should get all the equipment first, test it before getting the animal, and truly ask themselves if they will care for it until you or your pet passes away. I just got a baby red-footed tortoise and spent over $500 to get the tank, automatic fogger with humidity and temperature sensors, various substrates, plenty of food to last the entire year, and most importantly, said a prayer to be able to care for my little girl, Yahya, all is life whether she lives 50 or 500 years. 🙏🏼❤️🐢🧔🏻♂️

That’s not a good enclosure for a red foot, Red foots the first 3 years need 80% humidity to grow a smooth shell. He burrows because he’s looking for more moisture. And red foots get most of their uvb through tree tops not solid sun exposure. Do more research.
@jordanharris64845 жыл бұрын
Sporty Tracy what would you recommend besides a plastic tub to keep higher humidity? And in regards to the UVB, how would I diffuse the light to replicate “tree top” rays
@spitterlike94825 жыл бұрын
Jordan Harris if you MUST use the tub at least create a closed chamber top to keep in moisture/humidity you can do this by using even a clear shower curtain, just be sure it far enough away from the lights you don’t want to start a fire google closed chamber tortoise enclosure. OR create a humid hide with a small plastic tub with lid cut out for entry area add 2 inches deep soil and 1 inch deep moist orchid moss this will help as well . The uvb is fine on just one half of the enclosure, if your using entire set up then provide more bushy plants that create more shaded areas. Hope this helps, just looking out for your baby ☺️☺️
