in my opinion I dont think season one Caroline was that shallow. Yeah she made some mistakes but she acknowledged it and tried to grow from it in that very season. Thats maturity, and I think its hard for people to realize that because teen dramas always associate women like Caroline (who are popular, girly, hyper-feminine etc) with shallowness unfortunately

Damon abuse her (physically and psychologically), her father hate her, she was torture more than one time, Tyler abandoned her for some revenge, lost every man that she ever loved and her mother to, even Elena, Bonnie and Stefan let go of her at some point of the show, but she never gave up on her life. I think Caroline is that type of characters who irritates you so much at the beginning and who you grow to accept and love in the end. I have to say, Damon's nickname for Caroline, "Barbie", really fits her well. At first glance she seems like the typical dumb blonde that others can either use or just put away, but if you look deeper than the surface you'll find out that she is a strong independent character filled with flaws but still works hard to be the best self she can be.

When you really sit there & think about all that's been done to Caroline....like ACTUALLY think about it. She was abused by Damon as a human, throttled by Katherine, shot in the head, tortured by her father and by others MULTIPLE times, disowned by her mother & thats just a fraction of the HIGHLIGHT scenes. IN ADDITION to all the moves she's made without being asked to, the absolute loyalty & bright ideas she's had that no one ever gave her credit for, & through all that......the way she maintains this almost ignorant & naive positivity & strength......it speaks volumes on the character arc & Candice herself. I got alot of shit for liking TVD because people thought it was just another corny Twilight; but SHE is the backbone of the show. She's an amazing actress & person who dedicated alot to this show & probably all of the cast members too & does not get enough screen time. Yes we've seen her in nearly every episode but she DOES NOT get enough screen time. She's who I strive to live as a person throughout the ups & downs of life & who she's presented on screen has always inspired me. If she had a motto I think it would be 'Do no harm but take NO shit'.

I love her so much she is so independent but in the first few seasons she was treated like shit and when Klaus came he made her feel wanted like the others did too but they were so focused on Elena and didn’t actually care that much about Caroline but Klaus always cared for her
