I grew up watching my parents stressed over their lives and I have always thought there's got to be more to life than stress! Now I am 50 and I have learned to enjoy the simple fact of life - living and being creative. Watching the flowers grow, eating, my partner, my cat, and just being in the moment - I find pleasure in most things I do or have. Thanks again for putting it all down to words. 🌹🙏❣️

I grew up Catholic and was bathed in guilt about everything. Well, I grew out of that in my 50s. I do what I enjoy and can still be responsible when needed. Saw immense suffering in my profession and it taught me to stop and really smell the roses. Last few years, I worked part time and took 6-8 months off. Good thing I saved for a rainy day, 😂 lol ,🌄💕💃

Wow. Not even 20 minutes ago did I tell my daughter that I need to take a vacation and actually go somewhere and do something fun, not something "productive." I've never taken time off of work to do something fun, only to get things done. I'm currently on "vacation" but that's because I got my floors redone and had to be home to do it. This is my sign to plan something fun ASAP. Thanks once again for always being right on time with your messages.

Being a double Leo with a 12th house stellium, I've always did what I wanted to do that was fun/felt good. I've also worked too hard for 40 years till I had to retire due to medical issues that I'm taking care of in my retirement. It was interesting to hear Caroline talk about the influence of puritan past. I keep telling younger people now to NOT work full time all their lives- not to wait till they're retired to enjoy life- they may not have the health!

THANK YOU Caroline! I grew up as a Dutch Calvanist. We had strong beliefs about work. Pleasure was frowned upon. This is what I am still dealing with. When I have had pleasure in the past, it was usually succumbed to the Hedonist Archetype. The 12 Steps of AA really helped me to get some balance. A prayer for balance, love and pleasure is just what I need to do in my life.

Love this archetypal discussion! It’s almost like the hedonist helps us progress forward. Even in the pits of overindulgence we really find contrast and golden nuggets of enlightenment here. In the Vedic traditions equal rest/ pleasure/ work. Work life balance is equal parts quiet/ reflection, awe / reverence, and only 1/3 of action / progression. That life seems truly rich. 👆🏽

Here in Scandinavia this looks a bit different culturaly, I think. At the moment I'm watching our relationship with the summer holidays, We're all behaving hedonistic and no excuses needed. Thank you for these videos, looking forward every one!

“Deserve” and “Blame” - these horrendous words 🙌🙌 oh boy this discussion hits a raw nerve. I learned very slowly to pray for pleasure through the experience of recovering my creative spirit in Julia Cameron’s The Artist Way 12 Step course back in 1993. It is a lifetime commitment to seek beauty and rest and peace and let go of urgency and unworthiness in the face of maybe not working hard enough or working as hard as the next person. Thank you so much Caroline for your wise insights. I am ablaze with sparks flying. 😂

Thank you!!! I requested this topic, and feel so happy to have my wish granted! Lately, I've been thinking about THE SENSUALIST too- that that may name me better than the hedonist, and your take on balancing work and puritanical legacies was spot on helpful. I keep both in balance, but because of our society, I perhaps incorrectly think of myself as a hedonist. To be honest though, I have very much prayed for life's pleasures before. ❤❤❤

When I was on payroll I accrued a lot of "sick" pay because I was healthy and didn't miss work. I attribute that to balance. To enjoy some paid "wellness/fun" days off, I would never call it that, so I'd just email that I was under the weather. They didn't know my definition is under a beautiful sky, trees, a movie theater, going on a silent retreat...

What a breath of fresh air that was! I see myself as more of a spiritually minded person, but I notice that my ability to enjoy and have fun in the present moment is what sparks the hearts of other people far more than anything else I thought I embodied. Next to that, the more consciously I enjoy life, the less I find myself wanting to vent stress in excessive pleasure-seeking (or rather: numbing) experiences. Sometimes life feels like a prison, you might be conscious of other dimensions but you will find yourself bound to the cycles of this world every new day you wake up. I feel it's good to remember this is only a temporary experience and that we better make it as much fun as possible. The harvest: no regrets and a backpack full of intense experiences to be grateful for and look back upon once our time has come to go. In other words: a 🫀 light as a 🪶 when the scale comes out. Thank you for this friendly reminder and surprising confirmation, love it! 💝

Thank you Caroline. I needed to hear this. A friendship of mine just ended. I couln´t tell why a friend who´s always having fun in all aspects of his life at all times-no matter what, never taking responsability at the consequences, and ends up throwing his anger at his closest friends, when he falls behind at work, when he betrays people´s trust at work when he procrastinates and does not deliver. It´s obvious he eventually feels bad about himself and becomes defensive and aggressive to his closest friends and peers. It´s tiring because he used to be a close friend but the story repeats itself over and over again. I guess he matches this Archetype.

Really thought provoking for sure. I think we have to justify “pleasure” for a variety of reasons including the fear that we will become too excessive if we often do whatever we wish. While at the same time our society values “work” on such a level that we seldom are concerned we will overdue it. I also believe there is a BIG difference between JOY and pleasure. God is all about both in HIM and HIS love includes ALL GOOD and PERFECT things as HE sees fit. Thank you ❤

Very much enjoying all the Archetypes….totally agree with the Hedonistic dilemma, struggle for Americans.; I also feel we are taught, very young, in school, sometimes subliminally , others outright spoken~ the WORK first and then the reward. IE~ I was telling a friend the other day, that very hard for me to watch a movie I’m the afternoon. I am aware of learning this from my Great Grandmother, And Grandoarebts; ironically not so much my Mother. Well, thank You Carolyn..✨✨✨ You?23:56 , said, “just seems too Hedonistic,” At 63, still looking for the balance. . Mu believe

Lovely, laughing, and deep... Balance and integration... What if we could adopt more of an Indigenous perspective that life is a gift, not a struggle of hard work to achieve our just desserts!! Perhaps then we would stop hating ourselves, dominating each other, and extracting resources from earth to fix the next 10 problems that we create with every expensive fix we hastily ram through. Thank you Caroline! this was really good insight.

It is important to understand that we have values that are inherited and values that we adopted in life which influences our actions and choices. Looking back, we can see where we came from. Where our parents came from. The era. It was the industrial age. The era of “more is better”. The era of religion (reward and punishment concept). Understanding this past will help us see why many are depriving themselves of the pleasures of life. Life is not easy by any means. There are many ups and downs to overcome. But there are these short moments of triumph that we all must recognize. You have climbed hard. You reach a milestone that you once set for yourself. I’ll stop when I reach the lamppost or I will take a break when I am on top of the hill. Sometimes we do stop and keep the promise to ourselves. Most time, we just push forward. What is critical to understand is that time is a bonus and death is inevitable. Yes, we can push and continue pushing for more thinking we have time and death won’t happen to us, yet. But that is only 50% true. Accept the other 50% that it may well be the case. If you’re dying after that hill…that’s the end of it. So slow down. Smell the roses. Take the holiday. Do the things that only matters to you because this life…it’s yours to live. The rest can wait. Your life can’t wait. If you are blessed with more time and more life after that, then offer it to offers for the good of the whole. Work for your legacy (something you are not here to benefit). But if you have worked hard in life and you know yourself better…what’s stopping you from slowing down, stopping for some well deserved time and life for yourself? Hedonist or not I don’t care. If there is no me, there is nothing to accomplish or do for others in any case✌️

For Caroline and everyone else- Edgar Cayce ( the Sleeping Prophet ) , in a spiritual reading that came through him- commented on how the Eastern World ( and religions ) in dogma of the populist version of “karma “ taught / modeled a kind of collapsed fatalism - that discouraged humans from taking even small actions to improve ( thus bring more pleasure ) into their lives / and the world . While the Western religions focused too much - to the point of worship - on Action - and using “force “ to Control and Change themselves and their world for the “Better” . Edgar Cayce’s readings communicated that BOTH extremes : were Out Of Balance . Both perspectives were necessary and needed to unify / work together - as Co-Creators with the Divine … on this humble and beautiful Earth .

This was very very interesting. I always found that Americans have a guilt from having pleasure . Europeans aren’t like that. I went to Lebanon in 1992 , one year after the civil war, and everybody was enjoying themselves, drinking and eating good food and singing while surrounded by their family and friends like there is no tomorrow. I also find it weird that generally speaking , they rarely show pleasure , or sensual scenes in American movies without following by violence. As if violence justifies the sexual scenes. It’s very strange. Caroline , believe it or not but while working in Santa Monica, California , I always took my fifteen minutes breaks twice a day while some of my coworkers use to skip it alot of times . I knew it was my right and I enjoy it. When I moved to Boston, in was even worst. There was such a guilt of taking their fifteen minutes breaks ,it was unbelievable. Yes, this puritan mentality is definitely part of this culture. Thank you Caroline for another fascinating architype.

At 63 l got rid of 75 per cent of stuff. No longer excess shop. Buy only what l need. I would rather be free for my simple joys. I was so empty and crowded. Decluttered allot of people also. Drainers of my energy force. Exhausting. Now l plan to take a couple months out at a Monastery each year....cheap to stay and my Spirt time. Eating excessively still working on. Pleasure is to have freedom for me and a simple home. May l wake up. Amen

I see the hedonist (better known as the sensualist) as very much at its core essence, a childlike lust for life ✨It is a child’s view of the world but as an adult. We want to play, sing, dance, express, create, connect, love. Unlike most people I see the hedonist as innocent. Those who are young at heart and have a great capacity for enjoyment of this earthly existence. Do we shame children for enjoying a swing set? Do we shame a child for playing in a creek? Do we shame children for laughing? Making a mess with pancakes? Loving on a pet? No 😊 Their enjoyment and pleasure is our own. Hedonist are here to show stuffy people how to truly live! How to receive life and how to give back to life. We are the nectar, the honey, the children of the sun ☀️ ❤
