@@alextint5987 eh, unlikely, she was a huge force at a big music program in college (I went there too and that was like right as she as part of Chairlift got the apple commercial and blew up, later produced for Beyonce and more) and has been a ghostwriter for a decade+ since. She was already a nearly master-level pianist/multi-instrumentalist. This is basically like a "stripped down"/unplugged rendition, probably just a one-time deal for this station as this matches their general vibe. (Other artists do the same thing on this channel)

just saw her instagram post about this video. apparetly caroline was nervous, "botching cords, wonky tuning, hands visibly trembling" in her words. I could kinda tell she was nervous but I feel like she's really hard on herself, because she sounded really good despite what she said in the ig post xD she reminds me of marina and the diamonds

I have never heard Marina and the Diamonds. I agree with you strongly on the Joni Mitchell reference, especially in this format, with just the piano. Caroline Polachek sounds to me like a cross between Joni Mitchell and Cher.

Caroline is one of the few artists these days that seems to really use her voice as an instrument! I heard an interview with her recently where she said she has practiced different singing techniques and styles, like opera. You can 100% hear the influence it has had on her work.

Another cool one is a song with a band called Delorian where she sings in a way that mimics how voices sound in reverse. We saw her San Francisco show this tour (mentioned at 18:00) and it was rad.

One of my favorite kexp interviews! Great interview questions and she's a great interviewee. She's a very thoughtful artist and he did a great job of pulling that out. He obviously is a fan too which of course makes it ever better. Love the name as well. Not sure how it took me so long to discover this, but so glad youtube finally recommended it.

I always thought her voice in the recordings used autotune or another software (as an artistic tool) to get this effect but they only serve as a way to enhance the beautiful tone and mystical effects of her voice. She is definitely one of the most underrated artist I've heard.
