Caroline Zilinsky is known for her portraiture, with an uncompromising and often poignant visual language. But a major award project took her on a long outback journey retracing the footsteps of Russell Drysdale to Broken Hill and beyond. As she tells Richard Morecroft, the challenge of painting the landscape as well as the locals forced her into unfamiliar territory, as she captured vast spaces, isolated individuals and cultural dislocation - but also camaraderie and community.
