Since I retired in 2017, I set my alarm every morning for 8:30am just so I can snooze it and sleep in...it's very satisfying. People ask, why set the alarm? My answer is, after teaching for 31 years, I want to be in control of my mornings and not live by the alarm.

As a Night Owl who has tried repeatedly to time shift, one of the things I was always certain of if I managed to be conscious and coherent before 9:00am was that I was almost without fail emotionally sensitive and needed time and space to myself to just BE, no forced interactions or activity or I went from 0 to 90 on the “murderous scale”. Later, in my 30’s I figured out how to set clear boundaries about that with the people in my life (the cats, not so much, but they get a pass). However, when you named this hour “The Moping Hour”, without judgment or guilt, I felt such relief and joy, sincerely, thank you, that is accurate and I have secretly called it that myself, and have taken it as a time of refuge, as if it were a Buddhist principle - which, if you think about it a bit, it certainly can clear the mind, body, and spirit in a powerful and beneficial way, for me it became a kind of liberating mindfulness without rules…

Texting is completely intrusive and obnoxious. I can say that because I am old and it has never been part of my life. WHY would anyone want to make themselves so available? What's wrong with phone conversations or emails? I tell people I do NOT text and they text anyway. Who has the time for that? Not I...and I am retired. Better things to do, even if it's staring out the window.

If you actually TELL people that, they act like you’re committing a mortal sin! Guess what though? I can manage to pull “all day-ers”. Most people who get up at 4-5am NEED a nap…they conveniently leave that part out. My sis in law asked me why I would miss a sunrise, because Karen, the full moon last night was freaking stunning!

I work with antique books and we often find antique flowers pressed in the pages. My favorites are ferns. The flowers always leave a slight acid burn on the pages, so we also see books that we know once had ferns pressed in them because of the fern-shaped acid burn lol. So Tim ferris had a woman on names Maria popova, she's nutso productive and has built one of the most successful blogs out there in 2 years time. She is brilliant, reads like 5 books a week or something. On that podcast she said something really smart, that she doesn't like to plan because planning brings you out of the present. I took that and changed my routine to just taking like 5 minutes to plan my day and my life has been totally changed. It is crazy how bad planning makes you feel.
@collectingscars

I love this. I've kind of accidentally ended up with the same conclusion. Planning too intensely brings me a lot of anxiety, makes me feel miserable, and I end up shackled to an idea of my day that I don't actually want and almost never actually accomplish. I wouldn't say I'm any more "productive" doing things this way (thought I guess it depends on how you define that term) but I am definitely a whole lot happier and more focused on the things that are truly important to me.

I love Forest! It really helped me when nothing else would. It’s like a throw-back to the Tamagotchi - I just didn’t want to let my trees or forest die, so I actually did it. Weird that I clearly care more about digital trees and do things for them rather than myself, but there you go…

"Laziness doesn't exist" one of psychologists teachers (ex-ballerina) told us in the university. "Laziness" can be just a SYMPTOM of psychosomatic or physical health problems, lack of deep sleep, unbalanced diet, lack of physical activity, PTSD, depression, fears, thyroid, diabetes, inflammation, stomach or heart issues, etc. There is even a book by Devon Price about it. "Wasting time is a necessary part of life. Basic human needs and our lives can be defined by our values, our relationships, and the things that give us pleasure, rather than guilt, shame, productivity, or trying to earn our right to be alive". "The Laziness Lie is the source of the guilty feeling that we are not “doing enough”; it’s also the force that compels us to work ourselves to sickness".

The next step for me after not optimizing for productivity is replacing that with prioritizing REST throughout the day. I think thats part of the reason pomodoro works so well, we need to recharge! Great video as always, Caroline. 😊

I feel like pomodoro gives me five minutes to create space between hyperfocusing so that I can recognize that I need to take a break ya before burnout. And the space gives me a better perspective on when to call it a day. To make better tade offs about my time and energy. And it's like a lure because I say "it's only 25 minutes to commit to..."

Only, instead of playing a character, you're just being yourself. As you aptly noted in another video, the challenge is to keep being one's authentic, honest (and a tiny bit fearful) self.
