Do you struggle with your drawings looking stiff and lifeless? In this video I’ll explain the 3 elements that create stiffness in your drawings and give you 4 strategies to help you bring that lively quality back.
When you’re annoyed with your stiff figure drawings, or any other drawings that look stiff it can be frustrating to keep going. In this lesson you’ll learn how to make your figure dynamic and bring a sense of movement and aliveness back into your art.
You will understand why your old drawings look stiff and gain strategies on how to fix them. The offered solutions cover both gesture and quick sketch drawings as well as more rendered, tonal drawings.
Materials I use in this video: 4B Wollf's Carbon Pencil on smooth Newsprint, Cretacolor Neros for the value drawings

A very heartfelt thank you. I’m sitting here,literally in tears, because, for the first time I am able to comprehend bringing life to the gesture and how to set myself on a trajectory of practice. I’m new to you channel and just subscribed. I am totally self taught, started this journey during covid lockdown. This video (your channel) is a New Years gift from the Art Gods! Seriously, your astute grasp of the subject of drawing and clear, concise communication are so so appreciated!

Chock-full of invaluable information. I appreciate the tip about holding the pencil in an overhand posture for a looser variation in line and tone. It’s actually scary to release the death grip, the “control.” 😄 Before I learned about gesture drawing, I used to ponder in frustration what the key was to “life” in drawing. My people and creatures were lifeless and stiff. Your explanations are comprehensive and clear through your sketching examples. Thank you.

Thank you so much for this Carolin. I just discovered you via Instagram and very happy I did :-) I'm struggling with my materials - I find charcoal much too black and heavy, could you let me know which materials you use?
@CarolinPeters
@CarolinPeters Жыл бұрын
So glad you're enjoying my videos! If charcoal is too aggressive for you at this point I recommend the Cretacolor Nero blend. These pencils are a blend that behaves like a graphite pencil but allows for richer darks, almost like a full charcoal. If you're working on a Newsprint pad with a smooth texture (most are rough) I recommend trying out the Wolff's Carbon pencils. They are smoother and less powdery than regular charcoal pencils and therefore easier to manipulate, but they are very dark. One last option I like is a black colored pencil that has a creamy texture, like a Prismacolor. Last thing I'll say is that you'll want to have your paper padded well. Don't just have a single sheet of paper on a wooden surface. You'll want to have lots of sheets underneath as padding, which allows for more value variation within your strokes. Let me know how your experimentation shakes out! Good luck!
