** FREE MASTERCLASS**
Curious what it's like to study with me? Check out this free masterclass about How to Make Drawings You Absolutely Love.
draw.clickfunnels.com/masterc...
If you’ve been practicing getting your portraits started with the Loomis or Reilly method, but at times you’ve felt stuck on how to progress this video is for you.
I’ll discuss the true strengths of the Loomis method and why it’s a great system to know and use and what to do when it’s not the most intuitive or beneficial way to start your portrait drawings.
I’ll demonstrate examples where I use the insights of the Loomis method loosely and explain how I stay on target to create a well-proportioned head drawing without being rigidly bound to the Loomis method.
You’ll also learn how this frees you up to create portrait drawings that are more expressive of your own style.
Materials I use in this video: Strathmore Sketch Paper, Koh-I-Noor Gioconda Silky Black pencil

Thanks for watching this video! What's your experience with the Loomis or Reilly method as a starting point for your portraits?

I love how you mix all the available methods and tools that make part of your thought process while sketching. Because narrowing down to one method is a recipe for boring results. Thanks!!!

I love these lessons! My drawings can get lost when I strictly follow Loomis or Reilly methods so thank you for showing how they can be enhanced more loosely or just used as general guidelines.

Absolutely! I know how it feels when things get so technical that all you have left are knots in your brain ;)

Your lessons are fantastic. I've learnt so much from you. I will just note - I find the choice of background (asymmetric positioning of the wall paintings) flower pot wall stand quite distracting, but its a lovely set up nevertheless.

Agree. Background is distracting and incongruous, to me

Well this explains why I would always fall out hard on portraiture with the loomis method. Those side and front faces really were just too flat, huh.

Your comparison to drawing a tree is great because although I learn a lot through figure drawing I want to use the skills to do other things too.

Yes, it's all connected. When we have real drawing skills they can be applied to anything. What are you interested in drawing?

So glad you're enjoying my videos. I wore in the description below the videos what materials I use. In this one it looks like I used the cretacolor Nero charcoals. They have a binder in them that makes them feel like graphite but they are dark like actual charcoal.
