Thanks for watching this video! What's your experience with the Loomis or Reilly method as a starting point for your portraits?

I love how you mix all the available methods and tools that make part of your thought process while sketching. Because narrowing down to one method is a recipe for boring results. Thanks!!!

Your lessons are fantastic. I've learnt so much from you. I will just note - I find the choice of background (asymmetric positioning of the wall paintings) flower pot wall stand quite distracting, but its a lovely set up nevertheless.

Agree. Background is distracting and incongruous, to me

I love these lessons! My drawings can get lost when I strictly follow Loomis or Reilly methods so thank you for showing how they can be enhanced more loosely or just used as general guidelines.

Absolutely! I know how it feels when things get so technical that all you have left are knots in your brain ;)

Your comparison to drawing a tree is great because although I learn a lot through figure drawing I want to use the skills to do other things too.

Yes, it's all connected. When we have real drawing skills they can be applied to anything. What are you interested in drawing?

So we're not throwing the baby out with the bathwater. The initial loomis style sketch still maps out a direction to go. Best point: yes, the sides are not an ellipse. They are the shape of the face. Thank you. Subscribed.

Well this explains why I would always fall out hard on portraiture with the loomis method. Those side and front faces really were just too flat, huh.

So glad you're enjoying my videos. I wore in the description below the videos what materials I use. In this one it looks like I used the cretacolor Nero charcoals. They have a binder in them that makes them feel like graphite but they are dark like actual charcoal.
