I just read "The Count of Monte Cristo" with you and Emma last year and had decided that it was my favorite book of all time, UNTIL I read "East of Eden". here's my favorite book list for 2024 (in no particular order or genres) Frankenstein - Mary Shelley (everbody say thank you Mary for dreaming about this when you were in Switzerland) The Fifth Season - N.K. Jemisin (this is what I want to read when I read Fantasy, I did not expect anything that happened in this book and it was all amazing, 10/10) The End of Everything - Katie Mack (non-fiction about different ways the universe could end, bleak, but humorous, had an existential crisis after finishing)= Demon Copperhead - Barbara Kingsolver (just yes) Babel - R.F.Kuang (I will never think about translating as a practice the same after this, I obsessively compare translations now, this was a stunner) I love hearing about people's favourite books of the year, and never know where to discuss mine, so here I am :)

Fredrik Backman is one of my favorite authors. The first book I read by him was "A Man Called Ove" back in 2020. I’ve read a few of his other books, but I still think that one is his best. When I moved to Sweden in 2022 and started learning Swedish, one of my goals was to eventually read "En man som heter Ove" in the original language. I actually gave it a shot, but I ended up giving up on the idea. Aside from his writing style and the way his stories touch my heart, I think the fact that his wife is Iranian makes him even more interesting to me. I found that out while trying to figure out why Ove’s neighbor in the book is an Iranian woman. Now I’m planning the books I want to read in 2026 (I already have my reading list for this year), and the Beartown series is definitely on it. I’m glad you love Backman as much as I do! Speaking of books, I started my first Sally Rooney novel about a week ago. One of my oldest friends gave it to me as a birthday gift (thank you, Nazanin!). It was a little slow at first, but now it’s starting to grow on me. I’m excited to continue reading her novels.

2023 was the greatest reading year of my life (40% of my top 100 favorite books all in one year) and 2022 came in second. For 2024, I was not thinking about reading too much, nor thinking I could surpass either of those two years. Favorite books of 2024 1) "The Friend of the Family" by Fyodor Dostoevsky 2) "The Pentateuch as Narrative" by John H. Sailhamer 3) "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban" by J.K. Rowling 4) "A Tale of Two Cities" by Charles Dickens 5) "If on a Winter’s Night a Traveler" by Italo Calvino I have made a promise to myself to read one Charles Dickens book per year. I read my first Harry Potter book (my favorite of the movies) and it was good. The religious book influenced many great thinkers and much of the thoughts of this book had already gotten to me by having influenced others. As I read it I was dumbfounded in regards to how much of it had already gotten to me already by others. Highly influencial book. You and Emmie got me to read the bottom on my list. All the rest of the books I read this year were about prayer.

One of the most brillian investing advice i have ever gotten on youtube came from watching an interview with Julianne Iwersen Niemann. Indeed, A solid investment strategy is like a well-planted tree-it can withstand storms and still grow strong!||
@florianmadison6 күн бұрын
That's great advice! Julianne Iwersen Niemann's perspective on investments as a long-term growth strategy, much like a well-planted tree, is a solid analogy. A good investment strategy should be resilient enough to endure market fluctuations while still growing over time. It's essential to have a strong plan that balances risk and reward, much like cultivating a tree that thrives even in tough conditions. Working with a seasoned expert like Julianne can help ensure your financial decisions lead to sustainable growth.

Finally I finished Grapes of Wrath and just cannot believe the ending! I wish I could say more here but we're [edit: reading] East of Eden this year in one of the clubs and I'm sure a lot of people will decide to read Grapes too. So weird for me that it's historical now because it wasn't when it was first recommended to me in the late 70s. My girlfriend loved the description of the lone turtle walking in front of Tom Joad.

Hi Carolyn, thank you for a lovely video. I'm so glad you loved Brambly Hedge! I grew up reading the stories and I still have all my books, I adore them. I even have a framed print of one of the illustrations that was always on my childhood bedroom wall. The stories, the illustrations, they are so beautiful! My favourite is The Secret Staircase closely followed by all the others.🥰 I want to live there too! My best books of 2024 were: Drift by Caryl Lewis. This books was perhaps the most unusual I read, it has magical realism, it's a bit of a thriller, it's about love, it's beautifully written, and each chapter title is in three languages, which is connected to the story. Caryl Lewis is Welsh and this is her first book written in English. Cobweb by Michael Morpurgo. Cobweb is a Corgi, Corgi's are my favourite dog, but it's a lovey story. The Book of Speculation by Erika Swyler. This book unnerved me and I almost didn't finish it, but I'm so glad I did. At the end I didn't want to live the characters behind. When I Come Home Again by Caroline Scott. This was my book of the year. It's set in the aftermath of the First World War and it based on a true story. It's about picking up the pieces, trauma, love, it broke my heart, I still think about it and it still breaks my heart, but it beautiful. Highly recommend all four books! 😄

Okay, I can can see I'm going to have to get a copy of the Bear and the Nightingale. It sounds right up my street! One of my favourite books of 2024 that I think you would enjoy is a non-fiction title called Natasha's Dance, by Orlando Figes. The title comes from Natasha Rostova's dancing scene in the peasant hut in War and Peace and it's all about the history of Russian art and culture from 1700 through to the mid 1960s. Since I know you enjoy Russian literature, I'm sure you'll enjoy this book too.

So, I don't get to read a fraction of the books I want to each year, but here are my big standouts for 2024: Best Re-Read #1: _Crime & Punishment,_ by Fyodor Dostoevsky (I got so much more out of it this time!) Best Re-Read #2: _The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde,_ by R. L. Stevenson (ditto) Best Sci-fi #1: _The Urth of the New Sun,_ by Gene Wolfe (please please don't stop at the 4th book of this series; you need to read this 5th and final book) Best Sci-fi #2: _The Chrysalids,_ by John Wyndham (a hidden gem that's about the people and relationships, like the best sci-fi always is) Best Sci-fi #3: _Dawn,_ by Octavia Butler (disturbing, but unforgettable) Best Sci-fi #4: _A Canticle for Leibowitz,_ by Walter Miller (existentially deep while still being very enjoyable to read and even humorous at times) Best Literary Fiction: _A Pale View of Hills,_ by Kazuo Ishiguro (he may be in my top 5 authors of all time at this point... what an excellent book with such a poignant ending) Best Classic: _100 Years of Solitude,_ by Gabriel Garcia Marquez (talk about unforgettable...) Best Non-Fiction #1: _Finite and Infinite Goods,_ by Robert Adams (a very deep and expansive treatment of theistic moral philosophy) Best Non-Fiction #2: _The Language Animal,_ by Charles Taylor (an exploration of what the capacity of speech means and how it affects every aspect of our lives) Best Non-Fiction #3: I'll just do a catch-all here for some theology/philosophy classics I finally got to: The _Proslogion,_ by Anselm; the _Demonstration of the Being and Attributes of God,_ by Samuel Clarke; and the _Leibniz-Clarke Correspondence_ (this collection of letters back and forth was really a gem) And I just have to mention one that I technically finished this month, but that may be one of my favorite books I have ever read. I'm not sure if it counts as sci-fi or "literary fiction" or what, but it's _Cloud Atlas,_ and it is a masterpiece!

When I think of the books I read in 2024 there are three series I read that come to mind and I think it's because I invested in reading multiple books about the same characters so they stayed with me more than stand alones. The first is the Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman, I read the first four that are out so far but I think a fifth is being published in 2025. It follows a quartet of retirees at a retirement village who go from solving cold cases in their Thursday meetings to getting involved solving a very real murder that happens in their village. Very witty and warm. Another series is the Cazalet chronicles by Elizabeth Jane Howard which follows the extended Cazalet middle-class family in England from pre WW2 in the 30s to post WW2 in the 50s. An era where girls were schooled at home by governesses, and live in maids and cooks were the norm, while men went to boarding schools, then into the family firm, had their private clubs and affairs. It was very much a social historical fiction where the war was in the background while the changing society norms was being showcased with this family. And finally I read the ACOTAR series by Sarah J Mass last year - so much fun and is exactly what I needed at the time.

Your content is automatically dubbed/translated and I'm not sure how to turn that off. I'm watching from France but I want to watch/read in English 😉 The honorable mentions in your description were translated word for word 😅 My best books of the year also include The Count of Monte Cristo and Little Women. My nb 1 is Betty by Tiffany McDaniel. I bought The Bear and the Nightingale with high hopes after watching one of your videos, hope I won't be disappointed 😅

I was personally really uncomfortable with the way Sally Rooney wrote the Spice Scenes in Normal People... that keeps me from reading Intermezzo. Or is it different with this book?

I read two books from Fredrik Backman in 2024 because of your recommendation. Honestly, I thought they were overly sentimental to the point of being cheap.😬🫤 They are funny and well-written, so they read really smoothly, that's true. Imho, a book doesn't have to be THAT sentimental to be deep and touching though.

Beartown is the most serious of his books. Not sentimental or funny but brilliant! My favourite of his books. Yet to read The Winners
