This book makes me angry. I hate everything this man is and his thought process disturbed me. I was expecting to find something deep here but no pure annoyance.

My goal for this year is to read every day. Even if it is only two or three pages, I want to work on my consistency and get away from having some months when I don’t read at all and other months of a dozen books

Hearing you talk about "The Bear and the Nightingale" (a book I'm definitely interested in, even more so now after hearing your enthusiastic recommendation), made me wonder if you have read "Winter Rose" by Patricia A McKillip? It's Gothic fantasy set in wintertime, and I dobelieve it miight be yourr cup of tea.:)

Happy Christmas to you. Excited for your new nest. As for my 2025 reading goals (so far): 1. 2025 TBR consists of 48 books broken down by quarter. I'll probably read about 25-30 of them. 2. During the 1st qtr, I must read contemporary lit/hist fiction to identify comp titles for my own novel which I plan to query in 2025. 3. 6 classics that I can't believe I've never read before and 1 that is a re-read. 4. 2 NFs about Gods & Goddesses or ancient Rome. 5. 6 autobiography, memoir or biographies about people who interest me 6. 6 other NFs about art, literature, women, Shakespeare, or history 7. 6 Fiction, at least two titles nominated for a book prize; two titles recommended by booktubers; and books that piqued my interest. 8. 6 collections of poetry, essays or short stories. I read these each morning when my eyes and mind are most receptive. 9. Donate books I've read to little free libraries so they don't collect dust on my own limited shelves. 10. Discover other independent bookshops 11. Recommend and gift books to my far away friends 12. Read at least one big book during the summer (over 400 pages) 13. Try to match my reading to the Savidge Prompts or Ben Reads Good Challenges. 14. I'd like to read one or more of Shakespeare's plays but honestly, I don't think I'll get to them in 2025. Not a goal just a wish. Cheers. marjorieapple.substack.com

I love that you loved The Catcher in the Rye. Holden can’t get anyone to really listen to him and try to understand him in the book. That is exactly how readers treat him. They write him off as a snarky difficult teen delinquent when he is really just struggling through death, witnessing a suicide and being a victim of sexual assault. I love Holden. His pain breaks my heart.

It's great that you loved the poems and songs in Fellowship. One historical thing to keep in mind is that Tolkien fought in WWI, which had a massive impact on him and his writing. And one of the big differences between WWI and WWII, in terms of writing, was that WWI was a war wherein poets fought, whereas WWII was a war wherein novelists fought. For instance, in WWI, the great writers of the war weren't novelists but poets like Wilfred Owen, Siegfried Sassoon, and Robert Graves. In fact, WWI in many ways marked the end of the romantic period in the West, and even more specifically the romanticized notion of 'Arcadia'. All of which are themes Tolkien uses.

Picking up from the holly painting and the trees, what if you painted a series of botanicals? Like the dried plants that people frame on paper, but painted. That would be interesting.

This video was very interesting and I hope you reach your goal. I don’t keep goals. I just finish one book and go into another. When you build your bookcases, will you be putting both of yours and his together or will they be separated? Just curious

My two bits: these books are not equally long - In fact, I would only consider Les Misérables, Don Quixote, War and Peace and Anna Karenina as long books, over 200k words. The others are medium sized, between 100k-200k words, and The Princess Bride and A Farewell to Arms are quite short, being less than 100k words. I agree they are all equally worth reading, though.

This was great. Some are the same as mine and others weren't but now are! Writing reviews is a great one that I want to embrace. You've inspired me to think through this properly and write them down. One goal might be to join fewer reading groups, because I always bite off more than I can chew with that and end up feeling overwhelmed and that I'm failing. And yet I keep doing it!

My reading goals: 1. Try to read a variety of genres. Some classical, some fiction, some biographical, some related to my career etc. 2. Read 25 chapter books to my children. I'm a homeschool mom to 3 kids, so I should be able to do this if I average 2-3 chapter books a month. And it's a great way to both enjoy some great children's lit and pass it on to my kids! 3. Read a couple of books with my husband. I'm thinking out loud in the evening with some tea or whiskey. I really want reading to be a source of bonding with my spouse and bringing us together to talk about our thoughts/feelings on a work.

You need to come to Edinburgh! You and Leon would love it, such a beautiful city. There's a Toppings here, a two-storey Waterstones on Princes Street with a cafe. Plus lots of gorgeous independents like Golden Hare Books (in Stockbridge, lovely wee part of Edinburgh with lots of scrumptious cafes), The Edinburgh Bookshop, and Portobello Bookshop right near the beach 💞 My goal is to read at least five Classics throughout the year and to write at least twice a week. My overall reading goal is 50 x

Awww welcome back to Newyork, so happy to see you in this room again😍 Oh my god your winter collection is just gorgeous. Before this, whenever I watched your Etsy videos, I would long for the chance to have one of your artworks. But now, Proust and Dickens are staring at me from my bookshelf, and I’m so happy to have a keepsake from you in my house. It will forever remind me of your boundless generosity. I wish you a wonderful holiday with your family.🎄 P.s: I also sent you DMs on Instagram. Would appreciate if you read it❤️🫂

Please do not make ridiculous goals like 200 books a years for reading sake. Enjoy your life. My reading goal is 12 books, one for each month, savour every word. Three from each Authors. Three by Fyodor Dostoevsky, Three by Dickens, Three by Victor Hugo and Three Contemporary. I usually end up reading about 15 books. Please read to savour and devour every words and comprehend the author and literary theories behind what they wrote and their various interpretations. Make a Commonplace Journal to enjoy them. Please do not make ridiculous goals like 200 books a years for reading sake. Enjoy your life.

My 2025 reading goals are: 1. Read the complete works of Charles Dickens 2. Resume the Ray Bradbury Challenge 3. My TBR has over 2,000 books on it. I need to focus on that and make some headway. I am a "mood reader" so I should have plenty of options. 4. More biographies and letter collections.
