YES, THE ROAD TRIP WAS 17,000 (SEVENTEEN THOUSAND) MILES. That's not a mistake. I got an oil change in vegas and my odometer read 99k and by the time I got back it read 117k. No mistake that's what it is. *Other Videos You Might Like: How to Find the BEST Free Camping: kzbin.info/www/bejne/a3XCpKacjr1gmbM How to Get Internet on the Road: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y5SpoGeZf6t5lac

So much to see and never enough time. On the east coast. Fall colors are amazing. I spent 2 weeks with no plans which was so exciting. Carolyn thank you for this past beautiful real and honest talks etc. I have laughed with you and the doggies cried with you over the pain and emotional talks sweat out some of your problems you were-dealt with and Just so admire you for helping us through our similar matters. Self care is difficult but so important. I’m weak in this area but have improved over the years. Thank you so very much for every moment. Safe travels and hugs. Take the roads less traveled and remember to be thankful for all we have, don’t whine about what we don’t have. That’s my tips. Hugs my dear. 😘

Your best quote ever - "Don't lose yourself. If you are not experiencing what you set out to experience - remember to self care." In the '50's my family camped in a 1949 Packard from Long Island to Burbank CA and back for 6 weeks. My mom insisted we stay in a little motel on Sat night to shower and find a church in the morning. For her that was the best self help for all of us.

As a professional introvert with occasional-ish misanthropic tendencies (if I did drag my name would be Miss Ann Thrope) I found in my 50s that I started to not hate being surrounded by people for short bursts every now and then. It's not how I want to live every day, but it sort of makes me appreciate my quiet alone time even more. There's something about resting and spending time alone after being with people that makes me savor it even more. It's like how a crazy busy work week makes you appreciate a quite weekend. I traveled through India for a month a few years ago with no plans, I just booked hotels at the beginning and the end and figured I'd wing the rest of it, there's a romance we often find about that. A week in I took a day and did some planning -- nothing too heavy, just an outline so I had some sense of what was coming up. This allowed me to appreciate the present more and not constantly think about what I was going to do next.

My husband and I took a USA tour in the winter of 2016-2017. We logged 26,000 miles. From Alaska to Florida and California to Maine. We were gone 7 months. I was not a good enough navigator and there were too may tense moments and cross words between us, Then I discovered Seri could provide constant navigation updates. That took me out of the situation. That is one of my suggestions. Mistakes were made and google maps is far from perfect but it was Seri's fault. Secondly I let things be imperfect. If he parked crooked, that's okay, That attraction/park/road was closed for the season that's okay.

Yes! I need my “ME” days to balance. I hated sitting down for hours or days making plans. Being in Florida I needed to sit down and make reservations, yes mostly free. Once I got down to it, it wasn’t as bad and to have peace to know I have a place that I like and fits my needs made it less stressful and I was able to enjoy more. Going on four years as a fulltime senior, and knowing you don’t have many years to enjoy was stressful also, I’m getting to a place of peace of mind. Slow down, make plans and enjoy the day

Hi there! This was a great outline of the do’s and do nots on a road trip. I recently drove 7 days straight, 6-7 hours per day and did not check in with myself! I believe that one was your most important tip. I did however, listen to when I needed to pull over at a rest stop for an hour … to either get some fresh air or fall asleep (I have a converted cargo van so I was able to sleep in a bed) for an hour before hitting the road again. That would be my tip… don’t be hesitant to pull over and rest on those long driving days. That was the 1 thing I did … to check myself… but only because I felt dizzy and had no choice but to stop for awhile. Last, I would say stick to what is best for you and your physical well being in terms of travel. I know my limit is probably 2-3 hours per day but I severely pushed my boundaries. I would also say it’s good to rest for a day or two before hitting the road again for a long travel day. Thank you again and hugs to Sadie! ❤️

I’ve not been traveling in my rv for long but I’ve figured out that I make a set destination and then plan around that. But my biggest tip was to have a “full no drive day”after I do the laundry and clean everything about every 10 to 12 days. By planning that in my travels, I get a chance to just be and let the experience of the past 10-12 days process in my memory banks. Then when I start out again, the van is clean, meals are prepared and route planned. Like a new slate. Oh and Carolyn, please see an email question from me 😋

When our kids were young and our time was limited... we were focused on getting from one site, one highlight to the next. Like.." it's Tuesday, it must be Brussels" routine. What I REALLY wanted was to just stay in ONE area and really explore that spot. I think the rig we have often influences the way we travel. If I had had a seperate trailer I would have been more likely to UNHITCH and explore with only the truck... but having a Winnie Motor Home.. we just kept moving. At least out East that'a how it is . Carolyn's right.. no where to park . : (

Same here. I would love to have a small rig and a very small car to tow. That way I can go do laundry or grocery shopping and then take little day trips without having to break camp. Also if your rig breaks down and you can’t get cell service, you can go get help.

We did a trip to Acadia from NC. My biggest mistake was too many travel days in a row. I now limit them to 2 travel days and then do a 2 or 3 day stop. Since we are east of the Mississippi, we supplement available stops with Harvest Host locations, if it is early spring or fall. When we go to Alaska next yr, I will also get a Boondockers Welcome membership.

Hey Carolyn. Another great video with super advice! Reminded me of a trip I made out west one year. I had never been out west so I planned it I thought well.. lol. Will do it differently next time if I am lucky enough. I was on time constraint and ended up going 6700 miles in 23 days. Got to see the places I planned, but know now where I want to go back to and spend time at. Sound familiar? Spent a year planning it. Ohio to Minnesota to South Dakota to Wyoming, Idaho, Arizona, New Mexico, Arkansas, and back to Ohio. Had wife, mother, and young daughter with me. Stay safe Carolyn and enjoy your time with Sadie!

I also don’t like planning. My tip I found out is to have the good foods and snacks I like to eat on hand or buy at a (low budget) grocery store. Otherwise I get junk foods at gas stations, or end up paying mega bucks at pricey tourist towns shops for things that I could have got for half the price. The more $ saved the more I can see.

My tip probably falls within the "self-care" category. It is: do NOT compromise your diet. Eat good food. Drink good drinks. Get the nutrition you need to stay healthy and energized. Another tip that is also related to self-care is get good sleep. Don't suffer FOMO and stay up all hours of the night and day. Take care of yourself and your body by eating high-nutrition foods, drinking clean water and sleeping well.

Road Trip TIP: For every 2 hours of driving, stay one overnight. So if you drive 6 hours to reach a destination, then stay at least 3 nights to be able to thoroughly enjoy it. I only drive and camp in the west, so this applies to my California camping preferences. No driving 10 hours (from California to Utah) and staying only 2 days/nights.

Good points to consider. I'm thinking of going to visit my sister in Florida soon from California the Bay Area. Hesitant because I've never gone that far before alone in my RV plus I would have some time constraints which I do not like, so trying to decide what to do. I have a trip at the end of April in Utah. In Texas there is an RV school I'm thinking of attending in the beginning of April. Too close of time frame so trying to decide what to do and not do. Ugh!

Liked your suggestions. I don't have an RV. I read just yesterday some states are making boon docking more difficult due to so many investing in RVs to live in full time. Are you beginning to notice any changes to availability compared to your earlier travels? You are resourceful with troubleshooting any situation that comes up. Take care.

Hello Carolyn! I’m Winter, hope you remember me. I met you at the Wisconsin meet up this past year. I hope our paths cross again one day. I have a on board generator I would like to give you. It has only been started up three times, and I know it would be a game changer for you.. while I don’t use it because of my other options. Wishing you an amazing year of travel and adventure!!

Hi Winter, nice to hear from you. Thank you so much for your offer to give me your generator. it's very generous and I hope you can find a good home for it, but I don't think I really need it at this point. I'm pretty happy with my current set up. thank you again and I hope you're doing well!

Sounds good. I’ll just keep it where it is then tucked away safe and sound. Just keep it in mind if you ever want it put in for you. Keep doing what you are doing… and never forget how amazing you are!

I watch tire pressure and check tires. Needed all new ones-ouch. Check oil and air filter and I have oil to add too in case I can’t find it. Check RV insurance and added a little extra additional insurance for emergency assistance. Weigh RV for total weight and how is the weight distributed. I check off which towns and how far to not fatigue myself. I look on the internet for free camping and my map shows blm lands. Overnight rest areas are good as well. I check miles-start to end point. Add miles times miles per gallon for gas cost to get there and back to winter location for money management. Lastly, I look at mountain grades and the easiest way to get there. I don’t like mountain grades.

I am a person who enjoys spontaneity. I know there is a end goal destination, but I want to adventure along the way. Get out of the vehicle, walk around a bit. If something is interesting along the way, I want to stop to see it. I don't want to miss some cute roadside attraction that might be even better than where I am planning to go.

I continually tell my girlfriend - take time for you .. Personally I pick one day a week , usually Sunday that I do nothing . Simple meals in a bowl , nap , watch TV or just spend the day looking at KZbin . Just rest . Stay safe , have fun .
