Carolyn I've been watching your videos for 4 month's now and your an inspiration for me. I just retired (at 63) and the only way i could afford it was to buy an RV and go full time. Believe me it was a very scary thing to do but I needed to get away from the stress of my life. My wife passed about 2-1/2 years ago and my life was not much to speak of ( work, sleep and veg on the weekends to recharge my batteries. I couldn't afford to stay in my house and retire, not enough income ( same story for 75% of us out there ). So started looking for alternatives and when I checked out the cost of living full time in a RV , the light bulb went off and I said to myself, WOW this is a very doable way to live out the rest of my life stress free. My plans are to head out west ( I pretty much grew up out west ) and relieve my younger days. Even with bad knees my life is 100 times better then before. I hope to meet you someday out on the road. You and many other RV tubers have really helped me out to go forward. NomadicRVR ( Rob ).

I love all your videos but this one by far was and is my favorite. I laughed and cried when you did. I lost my toy poodle last February from diabetes and that was the hardest day of my life besides losing my father. I have been depressed all week and him playing and laying on the bed just brought a smile to my face. I know how you love him because they are apart of us. They are our kids. You talk to them, include them in your everyday life. I hope he lives many many more years Carolyn. He is precious. I am going to check the natural pet warehouse out for my new puppy. God bless you and I will continue watching.

Carolyn I feel your pain the thought of losing your best friend Capone, is just too much to contemplate. Our lab passed at the ripe old age of 15 so looking at how loved and doted on he is with such a wonderful doggy Mom I reckon he’s got a good few years in him yet. Keep posting your wonderful adventures together, you are helping a lot of people, just love your honesty and realism and spiritual aura think your awesome. I’m in England so yes your are definitely global now!

Our dogs wear a Kurgo. They are special harnesses that connect to the car seat. My Lola is a small dog, so she has a car seat and the Kurgo connects to it. My Maggie is a Lab so her Kurgo connects to the car seat directly. She has one of her beds in the back seat, so she sleeps comfortable and she wants to see out the window, she can get up. Finally a good video about dogs while traveling. I love the picture of Capone in the drivers seat.

Hi Again Carolyn- As my name might imply I'm the caretaker of six dogs I keep, all who have come to me through my work in dog rescue. I've been deeply involved with a great rescue/shelter for over ten years, and we've saved thousands of southern dogs and pups in that time. Yes, my pack definitely limits my mobility, so I understand why a new pup in addition to Capone isn't in your plans. Eventually I'll also be a one dog man again- there's something special about the bond you form with an only dog. My group is between 11 and 14, so I have difficulties coming my way soon. I'm not looking forward to that, but in the future I'll have more freedom and then, with luck, I'll be able to make different choices. You're right, with dogs it's a balance between freedom and safety. It seems you've done extremely well by Capone over the years, so kudos to both of you. Sending all my best to you and Bob, and of course Cody and Capone. I hope to join you out there on your adventures sometime in the not too distant future. In the meantime I'll just have to follow along on KZbin and live vicariously through your stories.

2 years ago.. in the same year I had to put my cat, Lucky, and dog, Lexx down. I bottle fed Lucky and watched her eyes open for the first time and was staring into those eyes when she passed years later. I was hugging big Lexx when he passed. It was the hardest things I ever had to do. They had good lives and I miss them as you can imagine. Give Capone a pet from me. He is very lucky to have you as his mom.

Capone - He's one very good looking pet, lots of smarts, you may watch out for him very well, but notice just how well he looks out for you. As for him being lost recently and you went out looking for him, eventually spotting him walking the track towards you, he wasn't lost, but in his version of that story "You may have been", he was just walking back home ;)

Mine is an 18 year old female version of Capone (same smile, coloring, etc) I opted to sign a new one year lease last month because she's started sleeping more and more over the last 6 months and since I am not fully prepared to leave yet, (financially) I thought it best for Babe to just keep her comfortable. Unfortunately I think we are operating in what servicemen would call a short-chain situation. I hate knowing that, but it makes each day more precious. Babe will be 19 yrs old in Sept.I am sure Capone doesn't mind the teary hugs any more than Babe does. I am grateful for each day, and I am sure you are.

I realized that we had to be very protective of her. She was easy pray for eagles, coyotes, raccoons, badgers, etc. Sadly we lost the golden about 18 months ago. We are now ready for a companion dog for our yorkie. Great video

I'm glad you like it too!!! "Find your convictions and stick to them, for it is better to be hated for who you are, than to be loved for who you aren't." because "Worry is a misuse of imagination!" Whittling away your worries is allowing more room for imagination. Imagination is creativity. Creativity fosters adaptability. "It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent that survives. It is the one that is the most adaptable to change that survives.” -- Charles Darwin. Being adaptable requires creativity. Not that you have ever left it behind, but you have choosen to more fully depend on creativity (KZbining) over marketing (others). You are now applying your creative marketing skills with other creative techniques. You are adapting the old with the new. You are more fully depending on creativity for your livelihood.

Nice video. Enjoy every day. I lost my Izzy last December. She was a golden retriever, which I have had from seven weeks old. And if she had lived, she would have been 12 this month. Three years ago, we set off, in an American motorhome, touring Europe. For two and half years, we were together 24/7. Just like yourself and Capone, she really did, have a good life. I take much comfort, in that fact. Unfortunately, the downside. When it happens, it hits you, pretty hard. I miss her every day. It's even hard, writing this. Listening to your video, it's clearly upsets you, thinking about that day. My advice to yourself, is don't think about it. Just enjoy every day with Capone and enjoy the journey.

I know the German Shepard breed best, but 2 good things to have on hand for a first aid item for dogs is 1) colloidal silver spray, and ; 2) charcoal capsules. The silver can be used by human and animals...that would have worked well in his eye. You can look up numerous articles about this. The charcoal is good to have on hand in case they ingest something. Charcoal saved my last dog's life. It is a lengthy story so I wont ramble.

Riley, my 11 year old female, lab/pit mix, travels with me in my Chrysler T&C mini-van. We have traveled across America from sea to sea and Gulf to PA.. We van and tent camp and have been to a lot of great places. One of my greatest concerns in the forest or the desert is snakes and other dogs/coyotes, etc. So far no problems but we are getting ready for our summer trips starting in May and my anxiety will rise again. Van camping I have had to leave her in the car while shopping but always leave the car running and A/C on (have extra keys) and never go on a hike without her so have missed out on some places like Mesa Verde and the Redwoods except for short trails. I am a retired widower and travel all over the U.S.A. to see the sights and visit family. I love the life style!.. Really enjoy your videos!

I totally agree with your attitude towards letting your dog be free. We currently have two little 10lb dogs and live in the country in KY. Previously I had big labs and Newfies. I saw a hack for one of those cooling dog beds where you take one of those floaty pool toy inflatable pads you can lay on in the water and fill it halfway with cold water. You can put it in the shade under a towel or sheet so his claws don't puncture it. if it stays in the shade, it'll stay cool to his body. You'll need an adapter to fill the pad with water, but then you can seal it with duct tape (over the piece you usually blow into) once it is all buttoned up.

I take a Benadryl every night for my allergies and to help me sleep better. If my bad hip or my knee bothers me, I take one Ibuprofen. It works so well for me. I also take calcium and magnesium every night. It controls acid reflux.

Hi hi, just discovered your channel a few days ago via youtube recommendation. Love it!e I just wanted to let everyone know, there is a device which makes it super easy to remove ticks intact. It's just a tiny spoon with a tiny triangular slit cut into it. All the vet's Ive ever seen sell them, they are dead cheap, and they make ti SO much easier and less nasty to pull ticks. Also it's so cute how he's training you to give him a treat every time he sticks his paw out XD

Thanks for a great video with some good info! I have a young 1 1/2 year old small rescue furry friend. I love her so much so when you almost cried about the thought of losing Capone, I totally understand your pain and also from having another furry friend pass away after having her in my life for 16 years. It is really tough. They can really touch our lives. You are a great doggy mom. You are giving Capone the best life you possibly can. He is really enjoying the journey with you and when he does pass, you will at least know in your heart that you gave him a happy life and that will give you great comfort and enough strength to go on without him until you reunite when the time comes. Take care and happy trails! :-))

OMG Carolyn, I had the same experience with a family dog, we had to beat a pitbull off him and we never thought once about our safety, he is another 1 of our family, we'd die for him or any of our furry family. I'm glad Capone was ok as was our doggie. You're gonna make me cry.

I love how you keep your boy safe in new areas. Like it has been mentioned you ARE a good momma. I want to share with you what I do for my 4 paws children. My 4 paws and 4 claws are my family too so we are alike. Where you travel in your RV I travel in my 30 foot boat but there are a lot of similarities. I have cruised many miles with no vets anywhere near and I too must keep the pups happy and comfortable. I will share with you how I travel and maybe you could use some of the ideas with Capone. I foster for animal rescues and shelters so I have picked up a lot of tips along the way. On my own I have discovered big dogs need big spaces in a vehicle. I have lived with fosters and adopted dogs from 8 pounds to 138 pounds. In my Suburban I cut a piece of plywood to fit the back seat and attacted two 2x4's to support it over the floorboard to give the big pups more space especially to turn around. In the front seat I did the same thing for both my Mazda and Suburban. I wanted to keep the air return open for proper circulation of the ac and heater so I don't put anything in the floorboard to hinder the flow of air. Getting the big dogs in the car was a problem. The rescue group I foster for loaned me a ramp and neither the Lab (90 pounds) or the Bloodhound mix (138 pounds) would use it. I finally had to build some very short steps for them both. I have doggie steps for them to get in the bed on the boat or at home. They are covered in carpet so the dogs use them ok. As dogs age they can develop gastro issues so on the boat and at home I have put down rubber backed carpeted bath mats. Once on the boat I got up in the middle of the night to use the heat (bathroom) as I had consumed too much iced tea at dinner. Iced tea is a Southern drink of choice sometimes referred to as The Champagne of the South but has no alchohol in it. I noticed my Maltese Baby was on the floor and I asked her why she was up in the middle of the night and then barefooted I stepped in a pile of her diarrhea. I just took the messy rug to the aft deck, put it in a trash bag and replaced it with a clean one. I currently live with 8 dogs. All are rescues and some are fosters for rescue groups and some are mine. I also live with 9 cats and all are rescues. I keep on hand the following medications for dogs and when I cruise on my boat the meds are always on board. Heartgard for heart worms caused by mosquitoes bites. The pesky devils are found everywhere even in the desert although I never saw any when I lived in Southern California. Flea and Tick I use Bravecto as one chewable tablet lasts for 3 months. Although they are expensive up front one saves by the time the meds work. Diarrhea in dog I carry Endosorb Tablets and Metronidazole (Flagyl). Metronidazole is the most commonly used antibiotic for Giardia. Giardia infection (giardiasis) is an intestinal infection caused by a microscopic parasite that's found worldwide, especially in areas with poor sanitation and unsafe water. Giardia infection is marked by abdominal cramps, bloating, nausea and bouts of watery diarrhea. You will need to get a vet to give these to you and you may have to beg and advise the doctor that you live off the grid a lot of the time and might be a very long way from a Vet Hospital when the emergency arises. Endosorb™ Tablets aid in the supportive treatment of intestinal disturbances and non-specific diarrhea in dogs and cats. You have an excellent choice in the glucosamine. I use it too when one of my dogs becomes a senior and struggles with mobility. I have recently had to start using Rovera for my very senior Shih Tzu. I also have on hand Tramadol for his arthritis pain if he is having a bad day. Yes I sound like a pharmacy but when one can be hours and hours away from a medical facility for dogs one has to be prepared. Like you I carry vet records with me everywhere we go. One thing I had to use for my Newfoundland who suffered from geriatric vestibular syndrome for several months was a dog sling for her hind logs to help support her and the help her get up. You could most likely make one using a big towel or sheet. You are so ingenious on how to do things this would not be an issue I am sure. If I must take 4 paws with me in the car and it is hot I too like you look for shade. I also carry two sets of keys so I can keep the air conditioning running for them and I will go back often to make sure the car is still running and they are cool. Of course I leave cool water for them to drink. The cool mat you mentioned does work good but some of my dogs are not comfortable getting on it because it does wiggle a little when they first step on it. The big dogs love them. Here in the South we freeze gallon milk jugs then let the dogs cuddle on them to keep cool. AC in the desert and on the boat. I have heat and ac on my boat but I need to be at a marina to plug in. I am looking at solor panels to install with an inverter to run my ac while at anchor. Heat is never an issue as I too have a Mr. Heater Buddy. While the boat is moving there is always air flow in the boat to keep cool but at night I must close up to keep the insects out especially the sketters. Living in the South along the coast we do have issues that are more of a problem than what you may experience where you travel but I thought I would share with you what I have to do to keep my 4 paws children healthy and happy. I love your posts and I love seeing Capone. He is such a good boy. Keep the posts coming my friend as I really do enjoy them. FYI .. I do not cruise will all the dogs and only once with a cat. I have a dog sitter to take care of the ones who stay at home. As some get adopted or some go to heaven I will cruise more and more. I love being on the water in the morning. Sleeping on a boat is heaven to me. Getting up before dawn and making coffee then watching the world go from black and white to the colors of the rainbow is my peace, my heaven and my serenity. Beautiful area. Loved the Capone backpacking picture with those melting big eyes. And then the one behind the steering wheel was a riot. You guys are livin the Life!

Heck, living in the middle of civilization my vet was always at least 45 min. away. Capone gets to be off leash, gets medical care when needed, eats well, has you around basically 24/7 except for a few hiking hours. That's the high life!!

Carolyn, I used Frontline Plus. Then, they came out with Advantix, which my daughter said would be more effective. She knows a lot about dogs and cats, as she worked for Petsmart and was able to learn from them. I have been using Advantix and haven't seen a tick in the house or on me or Sammy. When I was using Frontline, there were ticks and they seemed to think I was the promised land. Sometimes, I could hardly reach the tick to remove it and had to be like a contortionist to scrape it off with my nail and it was so hard to be sure to get the head of the tick, so it wouldn't regenerate and burrow deeper into my skin. My granddaughter had Lyme's disease and had to be treated with an I.V. almost like getting chemotherapy for cancer. Llyme's disease can cripple, and it can also affect the brain and the whole neurological system. There is not enough publicizing about the danger of ticks, which puts people at a higher risk of being infected and not getting treated. Please pass this along to your fellow RV'ers in your travels. I'm so glad you brought up the subject. You have so many followers. They can learn from you and have a better life.

Definitely part Rotten Rott. I had jalousie windows they were fantastic no matter the weather when leaving my dog in the camper. . Yes, You do need to go to Best Friends and get a dog about 2 yrs old so Capones can teach him his mannerisms and that will also make his loss a little less stressful for you when the time comes.

I think Capone is blessed to have a Momma who lets him be out in the wild with nature rather than chained up in town.

My sticks and bricks home is at least 45 min min from vet. We live in the middle of a forest. That means we live that far from human doctoring as well. The trade off would be living in town. Thanks for the great idea of taking dog around where we park the little RV so there is less potential to get lost. Good thinking.

Bless you Carolyn for the wonderful account about being with dogs in traveling situations, and especially about the needs of older ones. I traveled at least 10,000 miles with critters. * Many Vets in the outer areas can be better than ones in the urban areas. Less profit driven. One I went to on the road was glad to see someone who cared for their pup, as the locals would tend to "put them down" rather than pay for a cure. .* Many rural feed stores have quality dog food and medications. * Coyotes can be a real threat, especially those in populated areas that have lost the wild fear. *Many older dogs have spinal problems. I found supplements were very limited, and it took more powerful things like Rimidyl. *When it get's to needing ramps and hand lifting, it is not long before the end. Very sad!

Thanks, Carolyn for the informative video. I also have an 84 year old dog, Leia, a German Shepherd/Rott mix that I rescued (bought) from a shelter 10 years ago. Hopefully you'll get to meet her later this year when I quit the rat race.
