Great Lakes Now

3 жыл бұрын

Since their introduction years ago, invasive have infested rivers and lakes around the U.S. But they’ve been kept out of the Great Lakes - so far. Some steps have been taken to protect the lakes system, but many believe that more effective policies - and more substantial barriers - are needed to keep the fish from spreading and to reduce the numbers where they’re already established.
This segment was produced in partnership with the National Wildlife Federation.

Some entrepreneurs have built a few processing facilities along Ohio riverside, collecting harvests from local fisheries. Then they turn them into fillets etc all sorts of packaged meats and export them to China after supplying the local market. Millions are being made year over year.

All it takes is for someone to pick up two carps from the Wabash river and carry it over the St. Mary river.

The carp are in the lake but they prefer rivers

Thank you for presenting information on this urgent problem. Another that I hear nothing about is the bitumen pipeline that rests on the bottom of the lake under the Sault Ste Marie bridge.

One woman in the states set a fish processing plant and exports them to china were they are very popular. The Chinese prefer the wild caught american fish to the farm raised Chinese fish.

What a shame. The Great Lakes coastline is larger then the east and west coast of the US combined. A marine biologist from U of M said if they get into the Great Lakes they'll become giant carp ponds. There will be school of carp miles wide.

The Great Lakes can turn GREEN with the cattle runoff these fish might be unstoppable so use them to eat and clean the water .

Why not focus on the processing and marketing side so there is a natural market demand to drive eradication efforts? Don’t the Chinese love to eat asian carp?

Asian carp. Do as Asians do. Eat them. They are delicious and nourishing. Put up a fishball/fishcake factory. Unlimited raw material supply.

What is needed is GMA.., a genetically modified alligator, capable of withstanding the colder climates of the Great Lakes and surrounding waters. These would also have their cravings altered to only seek and consume Carp, especially Asian Carp. An accelerated metabolism would be of great benefit since they would be forever in a state of hunger. Hungering for Carp! A simple solution... Let's get on it!

And with carp that gets so big the alligators can thrive off of a couple hundred pound carp and there are probably thousands of hundred pound carp in any given like so

Thing is alligator carp eat then sit on the bottom and digest for a long time not using a lot of energy so they really don't eat that much still way cooler fish than Asian carp

Asian carp are planktivores, I don't think they'll find the great lakes to be good habitat
@jbarbatano

Silver carp and bighead carp are planktivores, but grass carp eat vegetation and insects, and black carp largely eat molluscs. They could all be disruptive in the Great Lakes which are already dealing with hundreds of other invasives that are disordering the foodweb.
