You can tell those two played a lot together. They are both masters at their craft and Karen's vocals are super smooth. I could listen to Joe Osborn play for hours.

David - In the mid-70s, my father had me, a teenager, playing bass in his dance band and I had the unenviable job playing some of the pop songs on the gig, where many of the bass parts were your father's. What a legend. I've only become a bigger fan over the years. Our fathers are gone and the music and memories live on.

Are you really Joe Osborn's son? If so, know that your father's work inspires me a lot.

Me too. I love a bass guitar that actually sounds like a guitar. There is top AND bottom in the sound.

Me, too. I wish they'd released this mix as the record.

Joe Osborn’s secret was that he used a heavy pick. There are a few spots when he hits some triplets where he likely chicken picks those notes with his ring finger. Carol Kaye also used a pick. It brought brightness and clarity to the bass line that came through on radio.

Richard Carpenter had a radio transmitter put in the control room so he could listen to the mixes in his Bentley. These records sounded great on the radio!

Hal,Joe and Keyboardist Larry Knechtel were like the most comfortable pair of shoes you'd ever worn. The support was perfect, and you knew they wouldn't let you down.

Karen Carpenter's story is so sad. She was an outstanding vocalist, an excellent drummer and such a sweetheart. Joe and Hal seemed to bring the best in each other.

Front pickup only-Pick near the the base of the neck-Use a heavy large, triangular pick- and of course, use a 25 year old set of LaBella flats, on a 1960 Fender Jazz Bass..Oh yeah, and be Joe Osborn.

It's weird how the bass completely disappears into the song I would never hear this isolated Bass and put it to the song on my own and yet it's a vital ingredient that you sure as hell would know if it was missing. for me bass player Michael Anthony was like that in just about all Van Halen songs. Separate it from the song it sounded terrible, like nothing relevent. It's like a single ingredient to a cake that might taste nasty on its own, but when you mix them together it's great. I do have an aberration for bass players that can somehow hear that these odd bass lines are what's needed for the song. Of course Joe's playing was it always like that sometimes it was up front and obvious and instantly recognizable

The recording of the drums is total 70s.. dead cardboard boxes. I have the same basic kit as Hal and they sound great. Round, warm, and punchy. What they did to that drum sound is a crime but decisions were made to fit the aesthetics of the day I guess.

I wonder if this is derived from the actual individual studio tracks, or was this from an isolating software that didn't pull the full drum track accuratly. I listened to the original studio song before commenting , and the drums sound excellent. Not a trace of harshness.

When you consider that he’s mostly hitting the ride you see in the above photo it doesn’t really have a lot of decay.
