I always come back to this medley video! To say karen was a great singer isn't enough! How many female vocalists can go from high to low with such natural ease and grace! I agree, there is and never will be a match for karen carpenter! Truly outstanding performance!

No one will ever take her place. She was such an unmatched talent and so outgoing and vibrant. What an amazing voice Karen Carpenter had, but she also “articulated” the lyrics like no other singer…she sang each word so clearly and distinctly. Hey President Pat your reactions to Carpenters are always fabulous !!!!!

yes, one ingredient of her talent that is sometimes overlooked is she had the most perfect diction and enunciation of ANY vocalist/singer male or female I have ever heard....

This was one of the most magnificent productions they ever performed...they were superb, and absolutely first-class. I don't know why more people have not reacted to this performance. After seeing your excellent reaction to this, they will I'm sure. You have done a fine job.

Both Richard and Karen recognized and admired the greatness in each other with their God given talents. We sadly lost this angelic voice 41 years two days ago (Feb 4, 1983). Listening to the Carpenters since age 7 in 1969. Her impeccable pitch perfect voice is timeless and etheric.

Great reaction. Great medley. My favorite one. When I think of the all time greatest vocalists, Karen is at the very top. I would highly recommend: “I Can Dream, Can’t I” and “Ordinary Fool.” They are two of their lesser known songs. They were never released as singles, unfortunately. They showcase again, like this medley, just how phenomenal Karen’s voice is. Thank you!

Look for the video where Karen's vocal for Ordinary Fool has been matched with Paul Williams' arrangement for his own recording of it. It is amazing.

Thank you for the beautiful reaction Pat. There's so much to appreciate about the Carpenters and Richard's gift for arranging is but one of those items. I love Karen's voice during "Take it e-a-s-y on yourself..." Her tone is so lovely. Carpenter's are easily my all-time favorite group. Please consider "Our Day Will Come" (the extended version.) It's very upbeat and the piano's delightful!

The whole Music, Music, Music special is worth a watch. Guests included Ella Fitzgerald & John Davidson. There is a nice medley with Karen & Ella that’s just grand. Also, Someday is off their very 1st album & apparently after this performance, they were considering re-recording it. Since you like a good medley & the Carpenters, check out the one they did with Perry Como for his Christmas special. The full version is on a compilation album called As Time Goes By but the shorter version found on YT is just as good.

THAT VOICE. THAT LOWER REGISTER. NOTHING IN MODERN MUSIC CAN TOUCH THE SHEER PURITY AND SPIRITUALITY OF THIS WOMAN'S VOICE. IT IS IF IT IS FROM ANOTHER WORLD, ANOTHER ASTRAL PLAIN.

Thanks for this wonderful choice and reaction, Mr. President. I don’t think I’ve seen it before and I’ve seen a lot. It seemed to be a sync but a sync to this actual performance, which I’m guessing they prerecorded so Karen could cavort around the stage. Whatever they did it worked, beautifully. There’s another medley on the Now and Then album, side 2 for vinyl nerds, or oldies. I can’t find an isolated version with the requisite video. My favorite concerts that contain it are Talk of the Town and the Budokan show. The treat in this medley is the Johnny B. Goode section where Karen stops singing and sits done and drums. But, since she doesn’t have to simultaneously sing like she’s want to do, she gives 125% to the drumming. She’s a wild woman when she’s just drumming. It’s a site to behold, for sure. In this medley the song Sing is from Sesame Street. In the Budokan concert, it follows the Oldies Medley. It’s probably the most unique version of the song that’s on KZbin. I don’t know if you want to tackle a concert as a reaction but Budokan is amazing, filled closely by Talk of the Town which is in London. Even if you can’t react they are awesome shows but could hurt reacting to a number of songs you haven’t done yet. Joe

I think she’s one of the few women listed as one of Rolling Stone’s top drummers. She was best known for that angelic voice, though. John Lennon of the Beatles once approached her in a restaurant just to say what a great voice she had. She and her brother Richard suffered a lot from the crazy fame they had at a young age. He quit performing for a while to deal with addiction. Karen began to struggle to be thin because she was touring, and girls were supposed to be skinny, and she reached that point where she thought she was fat no matter what her weight. Tragic loss of a brilliant young talent. Richard still works as a musician and music arranger. IMO their best song is “Superstar.”

Check out the standards medley from the same 1980 TV special. Karen and Ella Fitzgerald. Magnificent. Richard carried on solo after Karen passed, but met with much more modest success. Two interesting tracks from his 1987 solo CD "Time" are Something In Your Eyes (Dusty Springfield on lead vocal; the song had clearly been written for Karen but she never got to record it) and When Time Was All We Had (on which Richard multitracks himself into an a cappella choir)... Also check out perhaps the jazziest Carpenters track, Another Song from the 1970 Close To You album...

SIR------------1ST, THANK-YOU FOR RESPECTING THE MUSIC BY NOT INTERRUPTING WITH MEANINGLESS CHATTER AS TOO MANY " REACTORS " SEEM TO DO ------------NOW ---------SADLY, YOU NEED TO KNOW : THIS WAS THE VERY LAST TIME ANY OF US EVER SAW OR HEARD RICH & KAREN SING -----------EVER. 3 YEARS LATER, AFTER LOSING HER FIGHT WITH ANOREXIA & BINGE--PURGE EATING USING IPECAC SYRUP TO FORCE VOMITING, KAREN'S HART GAVE OUT IN EARLY FEBRUARY OF 1983. HER DESCENT INTO THE VERY WORST OF ANOREXIA , AT ONE TIME WEIGHING 77 LBS-----------BEGAN AFTER THIS ABC TV SPECIAL. -------------NOW, ALSO : WHEN MY LATE-WIFE & I WATCHED THIS , WHICH WE DID, WE WERE BOTH HORRIFIED ---------TRULY FRIGHTENED, AT HOW THIN KAREN WAS. HER FACE SHOWED IT, & WHEN YOU SAW HER STAND , IT WAS GLARINGLY OBVIOUS, SHE WAS DANGEROUSLY THIN HERE, IN 1980. THE REALLY STRANGE THING WAS HOW HER ANOREXIA AFFECTED HER VOICE. GONE, WAS THE ALTO-----CONTRALTO. NOW, KAREN WAS ALMOST A MEZZO SOPRANO. HER VOICE THINNED OUT,TOO. THE RICHNESS OF '69, TO '75, WAS GONE . OH, SHE COULD STILL SING, BUT IT WAS DIFFERENT, & WE BOTH NOTICED IT RIGHT AWAY. KAREN NEVER SANG IN PUBLIC HERE IN THE USA , EVER AGAIN, EXCEPT FOR A BRIEF CHRISTMAS APPEARANCE AT A LOCAL FUND RAISER. BUT BY THEN, SHE WAS SO THIN, PEOPLE WERE AGHAST AT HER . ALSO, RICHARD DEVELOPED A DEBILITATING DEPENDENCE ON PRESCRIPTION SLEEPING PILLS, THAT WAS SO BAD, HE HAD TO SPEND 6 MONTHS IN REHAB AT THE MENNINGER CLINIC . BOTH OF THEIR LIVES OVER THE NEXT 3 YEARS, BECAME VERY DIFFICULT, & FOR KAREN, HER FAILED MARRIAGE WAS THE VERY WORST THING THAT COULD HAVE HAPPENED. ---------THE SONG " SOMEDAY ", IS FROM THEIR VERY 1ST ALBUM, FROM THE SPRING OF 1969. WRITTEN BY RICHARD & JOHN BETTIS, IT IS MY ALL-TIME #1 SONG BY RICHARD & KAREN. IT'S ON YT ; YOU SIR, NEED TO HEAR IT. IT IS SIMPLY, GORGEOUS, FROM THE THEN 19 Y/O KAREN. --------------------MJL, 77 Y/O

Here are isolated vocals of Karen for the Music Music Music arrangement along with other songs. Her voice quality is amazing! Frank Pooler her choir director in college deserves much credit because he taught the a cappella class where dictation and enunciation were stressed for the group. kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z3yao4OfnK14Z6ssi=8
