There could be; however, though we thought the studio stranglehold was bad, seems the new reality is worse, at least for big stuff. @@roystonboodoo7525 Sure. But didn't other singers have similar skills? Of course, when comparing the voices of singers at this level, one must be careful to compare at similar ages. Even the birds listened when Karen sang! Only Yesterday still remains the biggest-selling Carpenter's hit here in the UK. Karen's alto voice was absolutely flawless. Her breath control, caramel smooth tone, intonation and the sheer feminine whisper to her voice - aswell as the trademark sadness that could be heard in her voice, made her both in a sense unique and absolutely breathtaking. Her voice was a knockout! Very, very few artists stand out as exceptional and unique in their style whilst making the whole business of singing appear effortless; Patsy Cline, Linda Rondstadt, Sinead O' Connor, Dusty Springfield and above all of them Karen Carpenter to name a few. Karen truly had, I believe the most beautiful voice of the last century. She wasn't a powerhouse singer with a seven-octave range - she just sang a song beautifully! RIP Karen - 'Only Yesterday?' Always infact..... Chris (UK).

@Sandra Kenny Karen was not that good of a drummer. Her drumming was very basic. Her desire to drum was probably an act of condescension, because I am certain that she knew what a great singer she was. How could she not? And if I am right, why would she want to keep that beautiful voice from the rest of the world? Was she doing us a favor? If that was the case why did she take singing lessons? Was she a prisoner to the will of her brother? I don't buy into that. But I agree with everything else you said. Nice post. RIP Karen.

It was the whole production (and not just her voice) that made The Carpenters so special... the level of musicality and detail in their catalog of recordings is on level that is rarely seen today. Its genuinely timeless.
@eds39697 жыл бұрын
Lance you are so right. The level of musicality that she and her brother brought to their recordings and concerts was astounding. There is a 1976 BBC live concert of theirs on KZbin. (One of the few concerts of the Carpenters recorded for posterity). I couldn't detect one missed note by either Karen, Richard or the band the entire show. The choreography was perfect. That show demonstrates the noble art of music performed at the highest level. Then when you consider that her singing voice was imo the best there ever was, then they were truly something very special. Their music will be playing for hundreds of years by true connoisseurs of the art.
@anthonycbrown19527 жыл бұрын
The magic of the Carpenters is reflected in the synergy of two talents (brother and sister) where the brother let his sister take the center stage and he used his composing and arranging skills to craft tailor-made songs solely for Karen. We may never see this breadth of a recording catalog of this quality from an artist again because of the lack of recognition that is bestowed upon talent such as Richard Carpenter, Arif Mardin, and Clive Davis. If you review their backgrounds you will find they are all very literate and bring a wealth of knowledge to the profession. Each of them 'stood on the shoulders of giants' and created timeless catalogs of music.
@alext.14597 жыл бұрын
completely agree with you,lance. It was Richard's genius in production,sound and arrangments combined with the voice of an angel on earth that made the Carpenters music unique. When I first listened to carpenters was in Dark Shadows and when listened "Top of the world" don't know why I felt as if had listened to this song before and felt like nostalgic and happy at the same time, then I started to listen to every song of them and now I love carpenters. I fell in love with Karen's voice she had such a beautiful and angelic voice, there won't be a singer like karen in this world. I've been watching almost all of youtube videos, interviews, concerts and I definitely love Karen she was such a beautiful and sweet woman with a beautiful smile it is shame the way she suffered and everything she went through. I would've liked hug her and every time I remember she is dead my heart hurts, but she left us her beautiful voice recorded in every song. We will always remember with love our lovely karen. I discovered carpenters at the age of 25 in these crazy times of 2022 and karen's voice makes me feel out of these chaos. May you be with god as one of his angels, singing.

Being a child of the 70s, all 70s music takes me back to the 70s, but I wonder how younger people react to this song. Lots of music from the 60s and 50s, and certainly before, can sound "oldies" to me, but since 1964 and The Beatles, music has evolved less. We went through disco, new wave, grunge, anthem rock, and hip-hop, but ultimately we are still in the "rock" era and romantic ballads never go out of style. So does this sound like oldies to a young person? I sometimes listen to the 50s channel on Sirius XM radio and I am delighted to be transported back to that optimistic era, but I wonder if 70s music does the same to the younger listener.

God does not need anyone singing to him ... like aretha franklin either. He has Angles that he created if he needs to be serenaded. But that is the Hollywood God. That is not my God or Jesus Christ. Eternity will not be about her or any of us or what we have done.. it will all be about Jesus Christ who died on a cross to save us from our sins. No one else did that for us. "for by God's grace are we saved through Faith, not by works, (or being a soul singer or making people happy or being a veteran or a fire fighter or a maverick politician or law enforcement or never killing anyone) it is the FREE gift of God, not that anyone can Boast of their Salvation. " I loved her voice and songs and singing too... but it has nothing to do with salvation. You can't earn it. The price has already been paid. All you have to do is accept it. I agree. I watched a programme last night about Adele: the modern Goddess. I can admire her voice and its strength but I so don't like it. She strangles her vowels and, although her lyrics are vulnerable, and that is unusual in this age of female empowerment and overt sexuality, I don't feel it in her voice. I do in Karen's. OK, she does not write her own songs but her voice expresses every nuance of every song she sings. I think it is difficult. Adele is lauded because she stands still and sings. Well, actually, most singers did that in the not-too-distant past: Carole, Dusty, Sandy, Cilla, Lulu, Karen, Linda, Olivia, Esther, Joni, Judy, Dionne, Janis, Bonny and others. They stood there in a dress or little top and trousers they might have bought from Dottie P and sang because they were singers. We seem to have lost that concept. To give Adele credit she has resurrected it but she can't touch Karen when it comes to nuanced emotion..
