@Sonikks6 жыл бұрын
In a way, they're both right. I think it was Ferguson who said "You have to keep spending to stay on top, to stay fresh" Tottenham atm remind me a bit like Liverpool under Benitez. I think Liverpool made a profit in the transfer market two years running under his tenure. He worked miracles with a squad that had massive holes much like Pocchetino. Eventually, it does become unsustainable and people will move on (players and managers). What goes up, must come down etc. They do need to back him more in the transfer market otherwise Spurs won't be able to compete continuously with the clubs above them. What Poch must think when he looks at the midfield of City, Liverpool and Chelsea. Sissoko and an ageing Dembélé aren't even close to that and it's starting to show. If the money isn't there, Levi/Lewis need to find some investment. It's no good having a shiny new stadium if you're not going to be competing at the top.

@Davor Ban But they have to spend around 637million of the clubs money in the same time on the stadium. The Clubs net spend is over 650mil for the last four years and the stadium costs is only increasing by the day. Where does the club get the extra 150mil more to buy the players and then spend on huge wages, which sets off a chain of huge wages for players like Kane, Lloris, eriksen, whom on merit deserve the increase. To put it into persepctive Pep in 3 years has spent close to 800mil but spurs had more than 75% of that spending on the stadium alone and is a club with the owners not pouring millions into it. Which is also more than what Jose has spent, Klopp has spent, Conte/Sarri and Wenger/Emry have too. This isnt Fifa manager mode.
@thebiasedreview54326 жыл бұрын
@@imo098765 You are right in a way. But my argument would be that spurs' recruitment has been really bad. They bought three really bad players, I mean worse than bakayoko and sanchez. Georges kevin nkoudou, clinton n jie, and moussa sissoko. You can even add vincent janssen and fernando llorente to that list. Even davinson sanchez has been poor Point by carragher was, if he had bought mane, maguire and may be another winger or striker, they would be better. Problem with spurs is, they have too many players of the same quality. They don't have like the top top player, 2 or 3 excellent players, 4 players for the team and half a dozen squad players. They have 60 games or so in a season, and hence poch should rotate properly (and not unnecessarily) to sustain. I think this will be the year where they finish 5th or 6th.

Carra has a point, when you get a golden generation you have to take the opportunity and try and get to the next level by investing heavily. But if there is simply not enough money then thats it - Neville is right there. However, I reckon that there is enough money, especially after last summer, to do more than they are but they just won’t do it because levy is to cautious and won’t take the chance. Maybe he doesn’t want the pressure of running a top level club. I’d have to see the clubs finances to be sure but how could they not have a lot with all the graces from how well they have done over the last 3 years and how little they have spent on wages and players in that time.

Carragher is right here, what Tottenham have gradually built is a great model but failure to spend that little bit more eventually let them down and they missed their opportunity. The squad has aged and needs a major revamp at the back provided that Mourinho doesn't blow it up further by alienating major players in other areas of the pitch. It's a very uncertain future, they won't find another manager like Poch that worked miracles without spending anything.

In fairness he did well for a while Wenger but the FA cups came towards the end after a few years of no trophies and the stadium had long since been paid off but he still wasn't spending the money. I still rate him extremely highly. He changed the premier League and British football with his rivalry with SAF and United. The best years of the pl have been with those two, Chelsea and Liverpool. He did a phenomenal job with limited resources.
@vkdeeno6 жыл бұрын
no. Wenger took over from Graham who had already won the league several times and had the best fed in the country. Wenger then had many many many years to build and at the start finances that were up there with the top clubs in England. Wenger had had years to prepare for the stadium. poch has come to a club that hasn't won't a title or trophy in ages. he's never had the finances to compete and he's been there 4 seasons? 5 seasons? something like that. poch took a tea who sold their best 3 players modric bale vander vaart recently and with in a mess struggling around top 8 top fighting with the likes of Everton. now ppl talk about spurs as a hard team, they've even the field with arsenal, they are expected to challenge for things.... that's pretty much as poch's work. not to mention this era there are genuinely 6 teams fighting for top 4. not saying Wenger didn't do a good job in the past (early on he deffo did) but his latter years are not the same as what poch has managed. (not a spurs fan btw)

Everybody saying that we should buy more, remember what happened last time that happened ? I do, and we spent a whole season getting spanked 5 or 6 nil by City and Liverpool, and having a Kaboul - Chiriches partnership at the back. Let's be real, which available player would improve our team ? The answer is NONE. Who wants to be back-up to Kane ? NO ONE ! We've got 4 good full-backs, 3 excellent centre-backs, 4 very good central midfielders, great attacking midfielders and a top 5-in-the-world striker ! Only thing getting in our way this year are injuries. In fact, a fit Vertonghen + a fit Dembele + a fit Eriksen + a fit Kane is all we really need. The rest are interchangeable. And whatever the outcome, COYS ! In Poch & Levy we trust.
@henrymartin62206 жыл бұрын
@@matttully1904 true that, we do lack creativity whenever Eriksen's not playing or having a bummer. Hopefully Winks can become that sort of Modric-Pjanic-Pirlo-Parejo deep-lying maestro, who can play with a proper number 10 in front and a solid number 6 behind. He definitely has the potential, and he seems a really hard worker, I'm pretty sure he's going to make it on the big stage. spurs spend about 50 million for 2 -3 years while other clubs spend 100+ million in one transfer window and still spurs keep up with them and sometimes do better. This either shows how good spurs are at playing football or it shows how bad other clubs must be to be at the same level as a lower club financial wise

Yes. I think they are in that middle ground where if they spend a tad bit more money we can have a real Chance At winning the title. if their squad was just a little bit worse with the same amount of money spent, I think everyone would be praising them but just the fact that the squad is that good without spending a significant amount of money we feel that Spurs need to spend a little bit of more money to win some trophies.

I can see both points of view, they're both right. Part of it is about risk and taking a chance, they shouldn't settle for top 4 every year. If they want good players to join them they need to show ambition. However, they also need to be careful with the amoun they spend, they can't compete on wages with the big clubs, they need to stick to FFP rules and they need to make sure they don't get into money trouble if the gamble doesn't pay off. Spurs need to invest for sure, but they need to be smart.

It's interesting hearing Neville's opinions as a spurs fan and someone who owns a football club, all be it Salford. I think he's right Levy has done an amazing job given the context but it is now at a crossroad to which way the club goes (in all honesty it was probably at a crossroad 1 or 2 seasons ago). However, I think what Carragher is saying is that at this crossroad new big investment needs to be made to elevate them. I believe the new stadium will elevate them, how could it not, everyones calling them the best squad in years which they are and its a huge start of history. I do agree however, that what we did 3-4 seasons ago with steals like Alli, Kane and Eriksen for example won't happen again, look at how much City have invested in that time just to pull together a better team in almost all positions. Unfortunately, thats the nature of football now, the ability to have great scouts to find these players, a board that will stop at nothing to get those players to the club and a talented manager to bond them together and get them playing great winning football. Liverpool have figured that out, city have and to an extent Chelsea.
