As far as best managers go it's Bill Shankly first. Actually Manchester United have had a European era, but that councided with a very competitive era, that's why it didn't sound like domination. But between 2007 and 2011 it's one C1 title, two runners up, 3 finals in 5 years, one semi-final and one quarter final, with a potentially winning campaign each year. So actually Manchester United did have a European era, but coincided with Barcelona, Inter Milan, Ac Milan, and Bayern Munchen best years also. So very very competitive.

@@doncorleole2356 you mean Barcelona? I disagree. Without referee they don't pass through Chelsea which is the best team in Europe in 2009. And they don't pass through Arsenal in 2011 either. So it could easily have been very different in the Barça's trophy room. Ironically, Barcelona failed to win the CL in some of their best years, like 2010, 2012, 2013, 2014. Actually they only have luck with English sides. And when I say luck, it's partly referee luck.

@@roronoalaw7772 Yeah Barcelona's play style was the nemesis of Manchester United. You have to be very patient, and play a Mourinho football. And MU wasn't a patient team. I still think we had a chance in 2009 with a different setup, with Ronaldo on the wing rather than 9, with Rooney as 10 rather than winger, and with Park marking on Messi. But in 2011 I didn't have much expectations, the team was old and tired that season, going to the finals was already a miracle by itself.

I am a Manchester United supporter but I really like Liverpool accent. I liked the museums in Manchester :) the city is OK, but as The Beatles fan, I was like in a fairy tale in Liverpool. As for Manchester United not doing good in Europe, Jamie is unfair. It was way tougher to dominate it once Champions league started. The competition is far greater than it was in the 70s. You had one club from a country which probably wasn't doing that good domestically that season. Now you have four decent clubs from one country. Also, how many times was Manchester United in the final and in the semifinal of CL? Unlucky twice facing probably the best team ever, Barcelona.

Why is it more difficult to win the European cup now ?? Back then , it was the best team from each of Europe's top divisions . One mistake .. or bad game , and you were out . Not like now . You can lose 3 games in group stages and still qualify . Bayern v Man U was the first time the final had been played by the runners up in the previous season . Alan Hansen said himself that if the champions League had existed back then when Liverpool truly ruled Europe , we would have won a lot more .

Richard Batty it is simple. Do you have more chances winning the CL when you have just Real Madrid in the competition or when you have Barca and Atletico as well. Same goes for every country. Also, I’ve been watching CL since 1979. It was common that the best clubs in the current season (not the previous) were actually playing in the UEFA cup. It wasn’t uncommon domestic champions weren’t that good in the next season. Don’t get me starting on Alan Hansen. He is still bitter Liverpool were spanked by Nottingham forrest in 1979. The club that won 2nd ECC despite being what 5th, 6th domestically? I know it happens today as well, but you don’t have just Nottingham forrest representing England in that competition any more. So it is likely you will face stiffer competition.

Professional footballers admit the old European cup was far more difficult to win because of the arduous travel and the fact that one bad half in a game and you were out. These day you can lose games and still go on and that's not even mentioning the luxurious travel arrangements they have nowadays which is also to their advantage.
