I love Gary he's such a bright chap goes against the stereotype of thick footballers. Neville is 100% correct. Problem is corruption, greed and power and I believe it's too late to be saved.

@@_ace786 It's not a bribe. It's a deal. A bad deal, yes, but a deal. This for that. A bribe would be if the top teams were paying the lower teams to vote in favor of whatever the top teams favor. As in, I'll give you x dollars to vote for y wherein y may not be in your best interest. I can see where the top teams are coming from. As Jaime was saying, they drive almost all the big money to football via the premier league or champion's league etc but it would be bad for lower teams to give up their only unifying power to stay alive and not go belly up.

disagree. the moment the vast majority of PL income isn't spent by the PL clubs for expensive players, the PL will become less desirable, and not generate as much income - meaning no money to share with the football pyramid. ultimately, the football league clubs have got to find a way to be sustainable by themselves.

Garry basically said everything I did as soon as I saw this proposal. 18 teams I also think will help our teams in Europe. The problem is, is that it seems to have been drawn for that reason, with what came out a few days later, regarding the "European league". The overall plan would still be financially beneficial to the PL if done in the format discussed by Gary.

.Championship needs a salary cap for many reasons. .If government intervenes, then they should create an agency where all British based football players have to sign up with. They would negotiate for players during transfers and take a flat percentage for doing so. This money could be shared across the game and would stop agents taking money out of it. Let's say 10% and man utd buy Bale for 100 million (example only), that's 10 mil that can be banked to help clubs during struggles or just shared around clubs. Foreign players agents could be forced to sign up to the agency and when a player is transferred to a British club from abroad, then a percentage of that agents fees is automatically played to the agency. .The game is being stolen and we need to take it back.

Soooo free-market capitalism isn't good for the consumers or competition and we need some sort of regulation to avoid obscene wealth accruing at the top... Who would have thought it...
@SuccimusPrime
@SuccimusPrime 3 жыл бұрын
"Free-Market" is not good in athletics where the main goal is league wide parity for the entertainment for fans. Every American sport has a salary cap except baseball, and even in baseball, there isnt such a huge gap in class between the "top 6" (which doesnt exist in American sports because it's so fluid year to year) and the bottom 6. Salary caps keep everything as even as possible to ensure maximum entertainment for the viewer. In business, the goals are quite different. theres no one to entertain, the goal is to make the best products possible. It's hard to create anything while getting taxed 70-80% of all income. It's human nature to make as much money as possible no matter the circumstances. Lets say theres a 15% tax up to $999,999 and 40% tax at 1mil, do you think anyone would ever want to make 1mil? People being fine where they are is what stagnates an economy. Anyone who can find a way to lower their taxes do, and guess who gets stuck holding the bag? You and me, the ones who cant afford to tax dodge The fact that a "Top 6" even exists in Football is a problem that really should be addressed

It’s nothing to do with free market capitalism, ethically free markets sustain competition, hegemony and self-interest is the evil that has to be combated. Nothing to do with a free market, it’s self indulged businessmen supplanting themselves over the free market. That’s why an independent regulator, as G Nev points out, is crucial to resetting the market and sustaining that competition long term.

Gary Neville continuously shows himself as a class act and I'd say, is slowly becoming a spokesperson for the football fan. Nobody wants a 'mafia' in the premier League. And certainly nobody wants to see clubs go out of business. I really hope that English football goes back to what it was 30 years ago where it was competitive, affordable and for the fans. Not the corporate diluted version of itself it has become.

Hands down the most detailed, and best discussion I've ever seen on Sky Sports. It's always fun to watch Gary and Cara joke and mess around, but they provided an excellent critical analysis of the problem of corruption in the EPL. It's a huge problem that needs to be addressed and Gary was not messing around haha. He told it exactly as it is. This new project is just a reason for the big football families to just gain more wealth, while ruining smaller clubs. Never forget about Bury F.C. and more importantly- the fans. Without the fans, literally every single football club, player, manager, owner, etc. is nothing. This blatant greed needs to be stopped.

Honestly the list of proposals seemed to address the main issue each of the interested parties had raised over the last 10-20 years - apart from the Premiership clubs outside the top six (although they may have liked the play off idea for promotion / relegation). Top Six wanted more say over how money is distributed (keeping more for themselves) & a reduced number of fixtures, EFL wanted a cut of the Premierships TV money spread across all divisions, an end to parachute payments & a Covid-19 bailout, Fans wanted cheaper ticket prices (for both home & away fans, plus introducing "Safe Standing"), And the FA got a cash payoff & potentially more time with players at the end of seasons before major tournaments for the England team. It's as good a starting point for negotiations as any (everyone starts by being given everything they want then they negotiate to an agreed position where some elements get compromised / watered down). The issue as I see it is the other 14 Premiership clubs that I suspect want to keep things as they are - they don't want the League Cup taken away because it's their best chance to win a trophy, they don't want the Premiership reduced to 18 clubs because any 2 of the 14 could lose out in any given season, they want to keep parachute payments because it helps them bounce straight back up after relegation, they only agree to bailout the EFL up to £50m compared to the £250m the EFL says they need & Big Picture offered, and they want to keep Premiership TV money distributed exactly as it is now rather than giving cuts to the EFL & more to the top six. If Big Picture can't even be used as a starting point for negotiations then the other 14 Premiership Clubs need to come up with their own proposal, they can't just reject it out of hand because the EFL is reported to be going under & once that happens the rest of the sport follows. Someone needs to give them a kick up the arse to get real discussions started ASAP - these issues have been building up since the formation of the Premiership, and you can't keep ignoring them.

I agree. People are so focused on the narrative of the big bad top 6 and the heroic little league 1 club to realise that the clubs at the top actually do deserve to have their power be representative of what they bring to the table.
