This was a suprise visit not planned nor did don lane have any idea it was going to happen. This was on their Australian tour 1980.

Ace was probably drunk in most of these "interviews" but he was actually a pretty coherent alcoholic. He was super chill and funny and just came off as a really nice person.

I was 12 and this surprise visit was a real treat for Oz Kiss fans. At the time I never noticed how Gene changed the focus when Ace struck it off with Don Lane. The camera missed the really important and real bond between Ace and Don. All we see is Gene stealing the scene with his usual BS. As we now know thats how he works, thats why Ace left the control freaks who still play Kiss. A sad fact is Kiss without Ace is NOT Kiss. Gene and Paul prefer it like that.

My fave interview is still the classic Tom Snyder interview where Ace stole the show, but this one has to be my second fave. Ace and Don had a fantastic chemistry and exchange. It was Don Lane's BIRTHDAY and all Gene wants to do is stick out his tongue and have a "look at me" attitude. Meanwhile, Ace is asking Don Lane real questions and asking him where he grew up, and just human stuff. WOW...Ace steals the show without trying to. He's just real. Gene on the other hand...laughable in all the wrong ways. lol

Don Lane & Ace are from my neighborhood. I live about 4 to 5 blocks away from where Ace use to live and my parents owned a Hardware Store on Bedford Park Blvd. It's cool to know these things now.

I've never even been to NY (I'm from Finland) but ever since I got into Ace (and KISS but it all happened because of Ace and he comes first, always) I have also become very interested in The Bronx and its history as in his book he talks a lot about his time there as a young kid growing up. I love how he mentions Poe Park in his chat with Don Lane, haha. I know Ace grew up on the corner of E201 and Marion Av. Just in case you haven't seen it, there is actually a great old documentary on KZbin about a block and its community which is located very near to your and Ace's neighborhood in Bedford Park, around E194th st and Briggs Av. The doc is called Our Block and it's from the early 80s. Look it up if you are interested! For once footage on TV about The Bronx that's NOT about the South Bronx... =)

I live in Gene's old neighborhood in Jackson Heights, Queens. Moved here in 1974 just as KISS were taking off. I went to the same high school and junior high school as he did but about a decade later. Had a friend whose older sister claimed she graduated with him in 1968. Our high school library had a collection of yearbooks from each year of the school's existence and I remember picking out the 1968 edition to see if Gene was in it and sure enough, there he was (as Gene Klein) in all his repulsive glory lol. This was about 1979, before his unmasking, so it was definitely NOT what I expected to see lol. The photo is now online for anyone who hasn't already seen it.

Gene's such a disingenuous, greedy egomaniac. Notice when Ace and the host briefly talked about being from the same Bronx neighborhood, Gene has to abruptly go into the audience to grab the spotlight.

Mike S Agreed - even Paul in his new book admits Gene was always out for Gene first...everything(or everyone) else second, etc. He states plainly that Gene was always about the "I" rather than the "we!"

Henry Richards Yep. I don't have an ax to grind insofar as KISS is concerned, but just as you rightly said, it's ALL about Gene, and to hell with everyone else. When you watch later interviews with Ace, while he made a lot of mistakes, he's a likable guy. I felt bad for Ace, as it was evident he just wanted to be a rocker, not screw everyone over, like Gene has done.

Mike S Again I agree totally. Many apologists insist that Ace and Peter are just bitter and so forth in their anger about how they were treated. But now, whether intentionally or not, Paul has made it clear that Gene basically turned his back on the band for a long time too, and was every bit as guilty for "sabotaging" the band's mid-period(sans make-up era) success, as Ace or Peter ever were earlier. Yet to hear Gene tell it, he IS KISS and has always been KISS! Ace has hinted he has another book in the works - that could really get interesting at this point!
