Like many people, I knew about Carrie The Musical because of WitW's video about it's rough battle with reputation. I came to THIS video wanting to see it for myself and appreciate the efforts of the artists who help build the show, but I didn't want to patronize it either. I felt like it was disingenuous to appreciate something just because it's the underdog. That seemed more like pity than appreciation. I wanted to experience it fairly and casually, give credit & criticism where it is due, enjoy it as if it's just as another piece of everyday entertainment that I just came across that day. So I allowed myself to stand up and get snacks or do chores as the video was playing in order to keep myself from overanalyzing or overthinking aspects of it. And when I was preparing dinner... 'Eve Was Weak' started playing and later followed by 'Evening Prayers'. I had my phone waaaay across the counter, and I kid you not, Hateley and Buckly's performances and the music shot goosebumps through me despite the low quality recordings. That's the moment where I was like "yeah, I can't deny it when the literal hairs in my body reacted to it. Carrie was something special, it was just dealt a bad hand."

I agree, so many insanely edgy original stagings of shows have been re-interpreted completely wrong. A great example being the original Hal Prince production of Evita, modern productions trying to bring sympathy, realism and authenticity into a show that was inherently a spectacular anti-fascist political commentary with genius caricatures. I don't like the 2012 production at all, they turned something that was on the level of Les Mis into Dear Evan Hansen and that's not a good thing, Carrie as a musical needed to be a Horror spectacle and that's something that even the writers of the show didn't understand which is crazy.

Words can't express how happy this makes me! I watched it live, and am now watching it again. In the Stratford footage when Margaret tells Carrie that she never should have let her live, and then Carrie asks her why she let her it's just so powerful and heartbreaking. I don't know if that part was cut prior to Broadway, because I can't recall hearing it in any of the Broadway audio recordings. If it was cut it's a shame though. Heck, before this I couldn't figure out how Margaret killed Carrie in the end. I had expected to see Margaret's arm raise up in an obvious and dramatic way, and then come down hard, but that doesn't happen. The footage was so poor that I couldn't see the dagger she's carrying as she decends the staircase. I expected to see her pull out a knife when she was actually holding it in her left hand the entire time. lol

Musicals have never really been something I was into, but Carrie 1988 is the one exception. Ever since I first discovered it existed, and gave the Stratford performance a watch out of morbid curiosity I just can't get enough of it. I guess it could have something to do with the fact that I was a Carrie when I was younger, but even still I had never really been a fan of the DePalma film, nor King's original, but there's just something about the musical version that works for me. This is my preferred version of Carrie, and The Master Cut is IMO the best version of the original musical available. I couldn't tell you how many times I've returned to this video over the last year and a half, but as long as it's here I know I'll keep coming back. Thanks again to those who made viewing this masterpiece possible!

Watching this all the way through really gives you a sense of what made this musical special. The shifts between extremes in tone in just a few bars is whiplash-inducing, but I really don’t think it was purely an accident that came from bad creative decisions. Being yanked between dark and light before you can get a grip on either of Carrie’s worlds is so unnerving and haunting. Maybe Terry Hands was seeing if the 1980’s megamusical format could handle some freudian uncanny (or uncarrie? I’ll see myself out) by pairing operatic scenes of abuse and insanity with 80s synths and lycra leotards. Who knows, but there’s certainly something in this original production that hasn’t been done before or since and has stuck with so many people for decades. Thanks for keeping it alive for people like me (born five years after the musical was staged) to discover!
@ErikChampney2 жыл бұрын
The Depalma film did the same, jerking from one tone to the next, but Hands wasn’t looking to tell a horror story. It’s truly a magnetic commentary on group think and mob mentality. This is beautifully made clear in Allen’s choreography. Theatrically, I don’t think this story works in the “real world.” The story is too grand, too tragic, too THEATRE. Thank you for finding it and for your lovely words. Get the news out about it. Keep our girl thriving!

Holy crap I love this show. Before I found this Master cut, I had only watched the revival and had only heard negative things from the 1988 version. After watching it, it really shows how they were so close to nailing the show, but they were just missing a couple of pieces. The revival really lacks the charm and emotion the original has. Sure the revival has more of a horror feel, but the original is fun and also makes you sympathize with the characters more. It works better with a bigger cast, and Linzi and Betty are powerhouses as leads. It would be fun to see a revival with more elements from the original. Amazing job on this Master Cut!

@@ErikChampney I guess I can understand but I think if I found some new footage from a show that has so much missing footage I would share it in a heartbeat especially if it was something like When there's no one or The Destruction

So sorry if this is an incovenience, but is there a possibility that you could upload the Broadway audios by themselves again? This rendition is fantastic, but I miss the old ones ❤

The remastered Broadway soundboard became an issue when a lot of people (strangers) felt entitled to demand Dropbox links to the original files - or something like that. I was becoming bombarded. It was a lot of unfortunate behavior, so I decided to take that recording down. I wish that wasn’t the case, and I’m sorry to not be able to share it anymore.

@@ErikChampneyI ended up finding a different audio. Its not your remaster by any means, but its the plain broadway. Thank you for letting me know, and I'll be sure to support your content 🌚👍🏻

I really don't understand why everyone hated this yeah the 2012 version probably fixed it to make the script more coherent. For the most part I don't hate the aesthetics of this version. Yeah the Greek toga inspired looks are a bit much but toning those down and the rest of the show is actually pretty cool. I want this back on Broadway so bad! ❤

I dont know if im dumb but i always thought Crackerjack was better than Out for blood also I always thought that in stratford it was called Crackerjack/Out for blood because the parts that Billy sang were Crackerjack and what Chris was singing is Out for blood also i think that white star is better than it hurts to be strong but thats just my opinion

ngl i feel like the hate train for out for blood/crackerjack is so forced like it get back than it would have been considered “bad” but now that we have musicals like “mean girls” i feel like there are way worse songs like i actually love out for blood.
