Your cannel is amazing and your lessons priceless! I love chinese instruments but unfortunately I am unable to learn in my country, since there aren't many chinese immigrants, so the odds of finding any traditional musicians are very rare. I love Pipa, it is so elegant and delicate. I've been looking for lessons and couln't find any as clear and concise as yours. Thank you so much for your videos!

Great video. BTW, don't you mean the open string in C major is A D E A? The text in the video said A E D A. Even though I had played Pipa for 4-5 years, I honestly don't really understand what you said about tan tiao 😂😂😂. I never had any basics about pipa other than lunzhi as I was originally play the guzheng. Somehow everthing about pipa feels natural to me, all the position of body, fingers and all that.
@carriepipa
@carriepipa 7 жыл бұрын
Hi, the open string in C major is A E D A, you can always follow the theory that the first string to the second string is in a perfect 4th, and the second the string to the third string is in a second. What do you mean by " don't really understand what you said about tan tiao"? Do you mean what I said was confused you?
@andyrrgrstevie836
@andyrrgrstevie836 7 жыл бұрын
Carrie Echo Pipa Studio not confuse me it's just that I never learned anything about the "phoenix eyes" position etc because no one had ever properly teach me to play pipa so I just learn most of the techniques by my self, usually via youtube videos (Zhao Cong is amazing 😜)

Thanks for all your lessons. I am male and I have trouble sitting with my legs closed tight together. Is there a way I can hold it in my lap with my legs further apart? Maybe I could put a board over my legs and rest the pipa base in the middle? Any suggestion would be helpful.
@carriepipa
@carriepipa 8 жыл бұрын
Hi there, for a beginner the leg is really a problem. I think instead of putting a board over your legs, how about put a paper between you legs and try to hold the paper by your legs? It will help you put some strength to close your legs. Hope this helps.

Hi Carrie: what fingerpicks do you use? I play guitar but lost parts of my right hand fingertips, looking for good fingerpicks. I got several different types that banjo players use, but they don't work well. Thanks!
@carriepipa
@carriepipa 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Peter, the fingerpicks for Pips are different from the picks for other instruments. I didn’t try them on other instruments so I don’t know if it will works. Hope this will answer your question. Thanks
@PeterRoos
@PeterRoos 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks - I'll just it out and let you know how they work. The "usual" type of fingerpicks that you buy in stores are for banjo, they're just not very comfortable (always too tight). I'll let you know how this works out. Cheers, Peter.

I hope its okay to ask a question-- if not you can ignore this! Im just feeling really lost Two of my thin strings for the pipa broke, now i am too scared to move the pegs for the other strings So i was wondering, how gentle do you have to be with the pegs? How much do you push the pegs in? Thank you for your help
@carriepipa
@carriepipa 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Gaye, thank you for you question. It happens a lot, no need to be scared at all. When you tuning the string, try not to roll the peg all the way to the end, roll it one time by another. And listen to pitch after each time to test. Meanwhile, push the peg towards the head when you roll it to secure it. Hope this will helps.

Hi, the fast speed start from slow speed practice. You will need to take time to play tan/ tiao in a certain time and then add speed.

Carrie, what do the numbers refer to in the etudes? In the last few bars, there are no string notations. Maybe because I'm so new at this and at the numeric notations, it confused me a bit to not have string cues in the last few baars of each etude. Since the 1s have been 3rd string I see that you played string 3 with every 1? All 5s were string 4(x)? I'll keep doing this until I get it but I'm not sure why the notation changes/goes away for us nubies.
@carriepipa
@carriepipa 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Cheryl, if you watch this video from the begging you will find that number refer to notes. This is numbered notation so 1 refer to C, 2 refer to D, 3 refer to E and so on. In the etude, all the notes are in opening strings, that means your left hand doesn't need to press on any fret to make notes. This is a practice for you to get familiar with the opening string notes and the finger skill flick & pick. That is why you will move your hands from the 1st string to the last string. And If you look very carefully onto the score, as one bar an example, you will find each note has a string symbol to cue you at lease once. If there is no string symbol for the notes, that is because this is a rapid note and there is already has a symbol for the some note before it. Hope these will help.

Hi, congratulations for your videos, I wolud like to ask you the etude 1 on PDF o something like this. Also on 0:54 since I read western score, Is kind of confusing for me, because when you say 5/G for me is A (la) note, dont you? Would be awesome If you respond me, Thank you!
@carriepipa
@carriepipa 7 жыл бұрын
Hi, thank you for the question. The nature pitch of Pipa is in C major A E D A, and if we play different piece in different marked tone, we change the notes based on the relation between the marked tone and C major. But using a opposite way. Say we play a piece in D major, because D major is up a P1 from C major, so the notes in D major is down a P1 from C major. So the notes in D major is G D C G. And based on that, the A in C major is play as a G in D major. You can follow this method to find all the notes in different marked tones on the score. Hope these will not confuse you. Please let me know if you have further questions. Thanks
