Plane shooter is such a good dad… That young kid with the pregnant “girlfriend” is hilarious, too. There’s something about being in your early twenties…for whatever reason, you’re completely blind to when you’re being played. It’s obvious to the cameraman, the entire audience, the fish swimming underneath the boat…but he’s just completely oblivious to every glaring red flag.

Serving at sea, to a land lubber like me, blows my mind. It's not the danger, the constant vigilance, the hours, the work, or even the food. It is those cramped quarters, the micro-bunks, and, especially, the extreme lack of privacy. I sense that there is not even room for a private thought. My heart goes out to the men and women who serve at sea. Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!

One more thing. The ex saying "no" just because he can, is what a LOT of male service members/non-service guys have experienced when dealing with ex's over kids. I'm not saying it was right of him, but what I AM saying is that is not a new or unique experience for men.

also back then, email was a growing concept. sailors were telling family exactly where they were located. Nobody thought about OpSec and how the other guys were listening to traffic and collecting where the boats where the boats were and how many existed. ***This is exactly why there is now a media blackout the instant an gunfight happens. Nobody can learn, particular phrases; they just missed particular equipment, a few injuries but no deaths, etc. This is also why rotation dates must not be known so bad guys can't hit locations while duty familiarity and abilities are low. 1983 - 2013

Amazing, looks like a hotel. I remember the days when deployment was like being on the moon without any contact with family. Sleeping on canvas for a bunk, no movies, no soda, no ice cream, no sleep, no anything, just work. Being on a carrier has it's perks. I admire those on WW2 Destroyers where walking a straight line was impossible, And I really admire those iron men and wooden ships of old. Really an overview of todays generation and it makes me fearful for my great grandchildren.

As a sailor (Airdale) who served on an aircraft carrier (carrier air group) for two cruises during war time in Vietnam. I dont know what it is like to serve during peacetime. So, as a very young man we worked 12 hours a day 7 days a week. Flight ops were either day ops or night ops. No phone service, no email, no messaging. I never heard an sailor say how much they missed home. Of course we missed home, but we had a mission. Being on a ship furing war time I think is quite a bit different than peace time. Because you are so damn busy. Never heard any whining. My deployment was in the late 60’s I remember be very busy. Was attached to an F4 fighter squadron. Back to back deployments. Would not change it for anything. Hang in there. Go Navy!

LMAO I'm proud of the Navy, and I honor these sailors service. I want to make a Comparison to the Army Infantry though; 3 years in a foreign country. Over 200 days a year in the field. 90 days in the field at a time, with no showers, and sleeping in the dirt, no heat or AC, , very few, if any, hot meals, and no port calls in exotic countries. (My longest FX was 97 days. Shortest time between FXs, 5 days.) Divorce rate for married couples, even when they're in country, was 77%. Counting down the days until you can finally return to the world/USA. Can you relate? LMAO I spent a year in S Korea (1979) where it was too dangerous for the Army to authorize dependents in country at all. (Unless the soldier paid for everything including off base housing.)

Great piece. Being a part of the military machine is very hard with regard to how difficult it is being away from family and normal life. You don't have to die in combat or be in harm's way to pay a heavy price for your service. And this is the price. And you can't refuse to go on deployment or just say "you know what? This job isn't for me. I quit" . You have to go. And it can be absolutely heartbreaking. That guy trying to call home and have a conversation with his kid who's just giving "yes sir" answers to his questions.......and the kid not really being invested or warm in the phone call in general. That's brutal as a parent stuck on a ship far from home with 4 months left on a cruise. Or the guy or gal on the ship wondering what their spouse is doing back home, or worrying about what they might be doing. It's almost impossible to maintain an emotional connection over the phone for months at a time, especially for a newer couple that doesn't have the foundation of years together behind it help with regard to trust. That's why all these people deserve kudos, not just the soldiers on the battlefield.

Some did well for themselves afterwards, some did not, and some were forced out. Capt. had to resign over Fat Leonard case, Commander Fraver you can catch on youtube from time to time, Lt. Dietrich still on the Navy, a commander now. Jello runs, Fighter Pilot podcast on KZbin. It's interesting to see some of these people are doing just fine. It would be cool if they remade this series to see what's everyone is up to years later. Funny how they never mentioned in this series about the Tic Tac UFO's they encountered during this voyage.
