Ford provided Carroll Shelby with an engine for his start up sports car company and AC supplied the bodies. Shelby hired a bunch of hot rod builders in California and they created the Cobra.
Soon Ford turned to Shelby to beef up the Mustang and turn it into a Corvette beater. The GT 350 was born.
But there was more. Henry Ford II had tried to buy Ferrari and was spurned. Not one who was used to losing he decided to beat Enzo Ferrari on the track. After Ford's first forays stalled they turned to Shelby to beef up the GT 40s and take on Ferrari.
Pete Brock, Ken Miles and Dan Gurney put the cars through their paces.

I met Carroll in 1993 and had the chance to thank him for the 1986 Shelby Charger front end and handling package which saved my life when I hit a deer. The car spun end over end along the side of a cliff, never actually leaving the ground, landing on the road in the opposite direction with the motor still running! Any other car I've owned would have flipped and probably gone over the cliff. I was able to drive it home, another 100 miles. His simple response was "Yeah, that was a great little car."

And Weyer ran the factory Porsche 917 programs. The GT40 was an English Ford product; Broadley/Lola, Ford Advanced Vehicles in Slough, then back to Weyer and some others for even greater success after the US support. I'm not sure why Weyer didn't pull it off the first time, but kudos to the efforts in the US to help move the GT40 forward.

@@montydurand467 You obviously know nothing. I would suggest finding actual facts instead of spreading disinformation, it helps. On the subject itself, a Superformance GT40 is about as close as we mortals will probably ever get, and that will run you about $165k to $200k, but that's a STEAL compared to the 1 million and up price range for an original and rare GT40. Also, the Superformance GT40's are in the Shelby Registry, totally legit, and have an improved suspension and other features, also it's road legal and can be a daily driver.

Great vintage footage of classic sports car racing. Starting at 13:25 is a scene from my childhood. I vividly remember this Sebring race, including LeMans start and the rooster tails of rain from the cars at night. There's a brief crowd shot at 13:50 where you can see where we always watched the race. My dad paid for the Turn 1 parking spot, and his friend Mr. Daniels brought the grove truck with the hydraulic lift bed. That's us on the right. Certainly explains why I'm a car nut.

These were the same driving techniques I learned in the police academy, pursuit driving(EVOC) early & late apexes, power thru turns & corners, downshifting over braking, straight lines(cutting corners) which equal wheels turning creating control, plus steering wheel hand placement techniques. Most importantly when in the lead, fold up the inside rearview mirror; distractions equal lost time.

I'm a little past 70 now but in 1966, I was a teen. A friend of mine's mother past away that year and his father bought my friend a Shelby GT 350. That car was fast. I remember it had the 289 and 4 speed. It said it had 306 horsepower and I believe it. I vividly remember he and I going on the Palmdale Freeway from the I 5 where he opened that thing up. It scared the Hell out of me as the speedometer was showing 140 miles per hour. When he hit that speed, he brought it down to 80 where a CHP officer snagged us. Being that we were juveniles, he lost his license for 30 days. If we were snagged at the 140 mark, he could have lost his license for a year or until 18. That was one Hell of a car. In 1968, I bought a Camaro SS 396 with turbohydramatic. I was able to take him off of the line but he was able to overtake me at 85. Shelby was an automotive genius with the 350 and 500.

KRA, thanks for posting this video. I don't usually care for racing/drivers/etc, but this was a nice piece of history. I love the rough documentary footage.

Great video! Thank you for posting it. I just ran a full track-day at Willow Springs for the first time... This is so incredible to see these legends at the very same track so long ago! I studied the track for weeks ahead of time, so it's absolutely fascinating to me watching them break-it-down corner by corner. I love this video!

Thank you so much for posting this. In 2006 I met an American girl from L.A who raced motorcycles. We got into a relationship and I went over to stay for 6 weeks. We went racing at Willow Springs on the weekend of my birthday in December. I knew Willow Springs was special... But I had no idea of the kind of history it really hid. Started at the back on her 54,000 mile R6 In 26th place and got a 12th and 13th. Some of the finest days of my life 😁👍

I saw two or three GT 40 Black race cars at Harrahs second floor museum in Vegas 30 years ago. THey don't look like the production gt 40 at all, they looked like someone took an English wheel , got some crazy aluminum Rosy riveter and put them together. We need more men like Carrol Shelby to build car companys from scratch with NO JOB killing Regulations. Lets make cars , ART again!!!!

I’m in my late 50’s and have been dreaming about the AC Cobras ever since I was a kid. Plan on building a Factory Five Cobra soon.... that’s the closet I will ever get to one.
