Because we plant in the ground we broad fork our bed before seeding. That loosens up the soil down a foot and a half or so. Cutting off the tops at least you can see what you’re pulling out. Smart! 2:09 that looks so cool! Well done, that’s a beautiful bunch of carrots. We love pickled carrots! Take care. 🌺

Great harvest of carrots 🥕Those carrot tops your tossing out are full of vitamins C, K, and potassium. Lots of great edible uses for them, or even to put in a liquid fertilizer 🙂

I'll read up on the uses for them. I put them in the compost pile. I'll figure out the fertilizer angle. Thanks for bringing this up! Cheers!

What zone are you? I'm 4B. It'd be interesting to compare zones and dates. Our last frost is around May 15th. Our first frost is around October 1st. I'll cover our planters to gain extra days. I'm hoping I can get another 15 days out of the planters with covering. Thanks for stopping by Garry!

Nice! Used to love those things! My mom told me she had to take me to the doctor when I was an infant because she thought I had jaundice. Turned out it was just that she had to force me to eat other food other than carrots cuz that was about all I would eat and it colored my skin. Little did she know at the time that was only the beginnings for her problem child. 😂

Love it! I loved to "sneak" carrots from the garden as I was growing up. My Dad finally figured out what was going on. His row of carrots were getting awfully thin! Lots of spacing and not many carrots!! I think I blamed it on rabbits!

Most of the carrots are chopped into 2" pieces and vacuum sealed and frozen. We tried pickling some this season. We will report how well that worked (I'm hoping it worked!). Let me know what else you need! Cheers!

You’ve inspired me to do a second planting. I let the carrot tops dry and then grind them to a powder that I use in smoothies and soup. I can’t taste them but figure it’s more nutrition.

Can the girls eat the carrots tops as greens for chickens?
@TheOldSwedesFarm3 ай бұрын
I put them all in the compost and the hens haven't gone after them. I'm wondering if the strong smell and taste isn't attractive to the chickens.
@suel16343 ай бұрын
What do you do with the carrot tops? Do you just give them to your chickens? Or do you freeze them to use for making broth? Or dehydrate them to add as green powder to recipes?
@TheOldSwedesFarm3 ай бұрын
We usually throw them in the compost pile and let them decompose. I'm hearing more uses and need to research a bit more. I guess they are more than compost, or chicken food! Cheers!

Awesome ctop. All my carrots "fork" 😢
@TheOldSwedesFarm3 ай бұрын
We used to have that all the time as we've got harder, clay soil. Try mixing in a bunch of compost, peat moss and other organic materials that will lighten the soil. After a few years, you'll have some nice straight carrots! Keep me posted as you go. Cheers Cameron!

Awesome! I always have difficulty growing them; (in zone 6a in MA) any suggestions?
@TheOldSwedesFarm3 ай бұрын
I would start right around your last frost date and pick when they are three months old. You could probably put the seeds in the ground now and get a late planting. You need light, fluffy soil to help them stay straight. Let me know how you do. Cheers!
