Hi. At 7:47 you discuss the "shunt coil" and can't seem to find any info on that. Can you please discuss that some and its value and is it directly across the input feed? It looks like there is a tap on it. Is the impedance of that supposed to be much greater than 50 ohms so as to drain charge that might be picked up on the vertical? Is it easy to construct and where did you purchase that from? Thanks very much.
@TheOldSwedesFarmКүн бұрын
Go to DX Engineering and look at the DXE-VMN-1 coil. They probably describe it better than I could. I noticed that I was hearing a bit of noise after I bought the vertical. This coil helped eliminate the static that I was hearing. It also bleeds off any static that builds up on the vertical. Hope that all makes sense.

Thank you for the video. Im an old school member back in the 80s. I have a President Washington radio with a silver eagle mic in excellent condition and have an Astro antenna. The question is, is the stuff I have outdated? I heard Galaxy radios are good...
@TheOldSwedesFarm3 күн бұрын
I don't have knowledge of that radio and microphone. I had a brand new radio around 2000. Used it until last year, when it died. I thought it was a really good radio. I have a new radio and the technology has advanced really far. My new radio has filtering that makes the receiver incredible. My old rig wouldn't hear half the stuff I can now hear. I would bet your old radio is quite outdated. Maybe fun to use but the technology has moved forward in leaps & bounds. Find someone with a new rig and listen to them side-by-side.

Good morning Rich and Holly! I love that you collect the wildflower seed. I have been doing it for several years and I had a friend come over to help me collect seeds from the wildflowers and some herbs on the wildflowers and herbs. She was excited. What is cool is I have seeds from plants for many years. So I believe last night was possibly our first frost here in Guthrie, Oklahoma so yesterday ai still have wildflowers all over the farm. I was able to collect tropical milkweed seeds from the plants I overwinter in the geothermal greenhouse. And some native milkweed seeds from the farm. So I will be collecting this week. I hope you have a very blessed day! Wendy🇺🇸🙏🏻🌎
@TheOldSwedesFarm7 күн бұрын
That is awesome! I wonder if the tropical milkweed need certain conditions to insure they germinate. Have you tried freezing some (and not freezing others) and seeing which seeds germinate better? Hope you're doing well Wendy! Cheers!

All of my garden seeds live in the freezer.
@TheOldSwedesFarm7 күн бұрын
Is that just a practice you follow or is it "required" for better germination in your area?
@BroqueCowgirlHomestead7 күн бұрын
@TheOldSwedesFarm seeds stay viable for a long long time. I've got seeds that are over 20 years old that still germinate really well. I've stored them in the freezer ever since we moved here 35 years ago. Because weavle bugs used to get into anything that wasn't in the freezer, flour, cornmeal, cake mixes, macaroni etc. So I just figured it was a good idea.
@TheOldSwedesFarm7 күн бұрын
@@BroqueCowgirlHomestead That is a great idea! Most of our native seeds won't germinate unless they go through "winter" so I simulate that in the freezer! Keep them viable and away from the birds and mice! Cheers Gwen!

Do you turn off the lights at night
@TheOldSwedesFarm8 күн бұрын
The lights on the ceiling are on a timer and are on from 6am - 10pm. This consistent lighting keeps the hens laying year around. There is a single light in the small coop and it is on 7x24. It is a small light to insure the hens have a small amount of light, just in case a hen needs food/water or falls off a roost. The lighting works perfect for our gals. Cheers Marty!

You should consider hemp near the water source...there seems to be pros and cons to each type. I think hemp is healthier and more absorbent. If you use hemp I would sprinkle first saturday lime in it. Might be a bit too expensive though for a barn this size.

The straw is doing a great job. Hemp is quite expensive compared to straw. We've got a barn to fill. Since the straw is doing well, I'm not going to spend the extra money. Great idea but not practical here. Cheers!

Coyote
@TheOldSwedesFarm14 күн бұрын
Don't you think the coyote would come back or bring the rest of the pack with them? We do have coyotes around here, but they usually only pass through in the middle of the night. We are far from the woods and so our area is "pass through" country - headed from one patch of woods to another. I would also think they'd take the hen with them. No one has come through lately so maybe a lone coyote. Thanks for joining us and commenting.
@suzannetodddziardziel935310 күн бұрын
@@TheOldSwedesFarm I live in a suburb in CT, and we have lots of woods and a couple of ponds in the area. Coyotes took down a dear in our back yard, pulled all the fur off of him and dragged him from the back of the yard to the back of our garage. They had ripped open the stomach and took one of the legs off. I think we scared them when we came home that night and that's why they left the deer. Maybe a coyote or the pack were gathering eggs and heard something and ran off before they could get more of the girls. Maybe a camera would be something to put in in case it happens again, which I hope it doesn't. We just retired and we are moving to North Branch, MI. I am going to have a chicken coop/pole barn, and get chickens that I have been wanting for years. I love the posts you put in as they are very informative for a newby like me. thank you!
