In this video I'll demonstrate a method for carrying a Halligan bar that I call the "Quiver Technique" - I don't know the inventor, but all credit goes to them - If you've never seen it before I hope you find it useful.

I carry mine like this as well, and love it! I would encourage others that start carrying hand tools this way, to practice putting the tool back in your pack after use while masked up. Example: using the Halligan to pop an interior locked door during search we’ll say and then putting it back to have both hands free for victim removal.

I love this. Numerous times I’ve hopped out with the haligan and needed to free my hands which means putting it down.

I’m going to give this a try looks pretty practical. I always have my Axe on my hip but I when I’m on the nozzle or throwing ladders can’t have that full set of irons with axe and Halligan. Now I have a new technique to try. Thank you! Stay safe out there

@@DALEGPEKEL it was not sarcasm. Just sad truth. I’ve used your masking technique with many of our probationary guys and girls. They are now having to click out of air waiting on other crews to enter the structure. I like to approach firefighting and being a medic with common sense and I feel you do as well. Trying to root that in our department and make it a better place. Keep up the great work!

I am going to start using this technique. I typically carry mine in a quiver/cross sling style so instead of it dropping straight down the side of the cylinder it’s crossed against my back underneath (adz/pike is left shoulder and the forks is right hip) not extremely comfortable for prolonged jobs. Thank you!!

I've been carrying mine like this for a while. However, I carry mine under the right shoulder strap and do not need to rotate or dress it. I carry a Maxximus Rexx.

There are FFs that do and it can be faster, but because you're placing/positioning it blind there is a tendency for the bar/forks to get hung up on the scba - So I prefer to place it from the opposite side - It might take a little longer, but it helps to ensure I don't have any problems with positioning it properly - See what works best for you and thanks for your comment!

Just tried it that way. It’s exhausting. And if you’re inside or in a tight space 100% exhausting. If you start at the shoulder like this you don’t waste effort at the top

What type of lanyard are you using for slinging your mask around your neck?
@DALEGPEKEL
@DALEGPEKEL Жыл бұрын
MSA facemasks come with a nomex neck strap. Other manufacturers like Scott typically don't, but sometimes you can check to see if they offer the option. Otherwise you could modify or fabricate your own, just make sure to use nomex or kevlar material. There are many out there that don't like neck straps, but I do and it makes a difference in my mask up times.

What about an axe carry?
@tylernetik5580

Works for the axe as well. Put the tool in the same way Dave shows. Just be sure to have the blade turned inside and “over” the cylinder rather than outside…..hope that makes sense haha
@DALEGPEKEL

An axe (pick or flat head and even some newer age tools) will work ok with this technique in the manner TN mentioned, but I found that it's not as stable due to the imbalance of weight - Since the axe head is much heavier than the typical handle that comes with it (wood, fiberglass, plastic or composite), the tool tends to shift and move around more than a balance weighted Halligan - The heavier the axe head and shorter and lighter weight the handle is, the worse it can be. However it still does work, but not as well (in my opinion) as a Halligan. In the end practice with the positioning yourself to see what works best for you. Thanks for your Q!

All good until you trip and drive the pick in your neck. I’ve worn a truck belt for 38 years and have had little to no issues simply placing it in my belt and sweeping it out of my way if needed. Generally the tool position utilizing the halligan is one that can just keep it in your hand. If working the nozzle etc, carry the axe in your belt to assist the halligan if needing to strike only. From the belt one hand can manage the halligan and adjust it.
@DALEGPEKEL
@DALEGPEKEL Жыл бұрын
Did you watch the entire video? Did you notice the position of the point? - Tripping was addressed as well in the follow up commentary. If you don't have a place to store your tool when not in use, inevitably you will set it down and/or lose it. In the end carry as you wish, this is my preferred method after carrying tools in a variety of ways being assigned to Engines, Trucks and Rescue
@Rescue-mt7fl

@@DALEGPEKEL I did watch, I appreciate that being your preferred. After 38 years in a pretty busy system, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve stumbled, had things like ceiling material etc fall on me etc. all of which could cause this tool to twist in a pretty vulnerable location. Thanks for the post and idea. Just have a different view of the risk.

LMAO Mike R, but this video is intended for FFs that actually do more than just carry a tool around the fireground and need to do other things with their hands than just play with their shaft.
