Stop!
Been wrong so many times before
I was always laying down the law
And all attractions were a bore
They led me back to you
Uniforms were an allergy
They never felt quite right to me
They conjured war-time Germany
And God knows we need that
Temptation boundaries will never know
The time when my morale was low
The circumstances always show
The place was yours or mine
Carrying no cross before me
No prize to idolize no story
To tell of adolescent glory
Just void, empty spaces nothing to show
No point of reference or place to go
But one thing I'd ignored and so
The light came shining through
Been wrong so many times before
Was always laying down the law
One thing you cannot ignore
Bad boys can come clean
Emotions I could not control
Illuminate my heart and soul
I saw a light, I scored a goal
And what price peace of mind?

In spite of that the album is known as a more commercial album than the first album UK - UK, this is their very best work they ever did, and this album is a little bit more pleasant to listen. Yeah I absolutely LOVE Bill Bruford - I’ve been drumming forever and for almost 40 years I CANNOT duplicate his style. Even when I was a teenager and in my early 20s I would put on my headphones and try to repeat his technique’s but not even close. But Terry Bozio is also incredible. To make a statement that one drummer is better then the other is a little off base in MY opinion. Different styles - but BOTH A+ drummers. That’s why album #1 and #2 sound very different. Even if Alan Holdsworth was still in the band for album #2 ir would sound different from the first. Look at Yes. You can hear a noticeable difference in the style of the rhythm section between Fragile/Close to The Edge - and then Tales of Topigraphic Oceans. A different drummer can really change the sound of a band. Anyway - BOTH drummers are AWESOME. Nobody better then Nobody..

I actually preferred this line up of UK. While Holdsworth is a God to me, I felt he wasn't really in his full element on the first album. It is certainly documented to the artist differences in that band. Holdsworth and Bruford ideals being more experimental, Wetton wanting more of a commercial direction and Jobson trying to balance both. Holdsworth actually tended to be outshined by the keyboard work. Not because of lack of virtuosity but by sheer sonic massiveness. Jobson's keyboard demonstrated just how powerful those instruments were in capable hands. And really if you look at many of the albums by other keyboard giants of that era, they either did away with the lead guitar in favor of a more prominent bassist. Or had a player that played either well. Certainly the case with ELP, and mid to late Genesis. Often the guitarist whom was more adept at playing written parts or blending more into an ensemble was preferred over a stand out soloist. Holdsworth needed his own space to take us into outer space and beyond.

Outstanding performances by all here. After a life of playing drums in just about every field for 5 decades, my greatest loves being, jazz/latin/rock/funk/rhythm and blues and any mixture of those, I can honestly say that the drumming for this album is unlike anything I have ever heard before or since. I can hear that it's Terry right away. I picked him out fairly quickly here from having listened to his work with Frank Zappa and also The Brecker Brothers. The drumming is brutal and relentless in its beauty. It's dark and brooding. The pyrotechnics and stamina are unapproachable for most. Eddie Jobson worked with Terry and Zappa. He was stunned by Terry's ability to improvise during insanely difficult passages. I really and truly don't believe there was anyone else alive at the time of these recordings that would have done work like this. My hat is off to one of the greatest drummers of my life and times. As for Wetton and Jobson, there isn't enough room here to say all the wonderful things I would convey. Stand alones, one and all.
@boblob2003
@boblob2003 5 жыл бұрын
"Brutal and relentless"... a perfect description of Terry's drumming. Ed Mann said Terry Bozzio played the drums like "every note is the last note I'll be remembered for" Bruford and Bozzio could hardly have more different in their styles but they were both able to bring their "own thing" to UK. This music is a gift.

Yeah, I'm a big Bruford fan and love the first UK album (which I think is some of Bruford's best work) but you're right about this song. The earlier live versions of Carrying No Cross with Bruford and Holdsworth sound somewhat limp and uninteresting compared to this version. Some of that is due to the fact that all the live recordings I've heard of the earlier quartet have uniformly poor sound, dunno why. All if all if I was forced to choose only one UK album it would be the first one (for other songs) but this is a masterpiece.

Caught the threesome with Bozzio on drums live in '79 or '80. They were the warmup band for Jethro Tull, and quite a few Tull fans didn't bother coming for the UK show. My roommate and I scuttled down out of the stadium seats and found a couple on the floor, 10th row centre. The bass for Alaska was spectacular. I could feel my organs vibrating against each other inside my body. Still one of my favourite shows, ever. Tull was pretty good, too. ;)

Wow. I remember when I first bought this album. I absolutely LOVED the first one ( to this day maybe my favorite of all time) and me and my buddies went home to my basement to listen to it. I had a cranking stereo at the time. This had to be like 1978 or 79 or whenever it first came out. So we’re all drinking and smoking and ingesting illegal substances and we were actually a little disappointed in the album so far( except of course for Caesars Palace Blues) due to its lack of guitar work from Alan Holdsworth. So this tune comes on and we’re all mellowed out listening to John Wetton’s beautiful soft vocals - then suddenly Eddie Jobson and Terry Bozio break into this incredible middle section and we’re like WTF??? We went from dozing off to literally jumping out of our seats. Of course when it was over I had to pick up the needle arm and play it again - MANY times. Absolutely amazing. Makes you wonder how people come up with music like this. And I might be wrong - but from what I understand Eddie Jobson did not take drugs.

and such a stout line up of musicians ! I dont know why , the album cover makes me think its a still of Michael Caine washing his hands in the movie , "The Marseille Contract " ( 1974 ) .

The skill and originality of this generation will not come round again sadly. The social and music environment of today does not support this genre to the extent that it can flourish.

Płytę rozpracowałem nuta-po-nucie i m.in. dzięki tej płycie wybrałem karierę muzyka profesjonalnego. Niestety. Ten rozdział mamy dawno poza sobą. Ja do dzisiejszego dnia grywam Carrying No Cross, Rendezvous 6:02 i Danger Money z sekwencerem podczas występów w klubach i podczas mega-imprez sportowych NHL.
