I had one in Peru, Montero io 2.0 5-doors version. It was phenomenal off road and very comfortable. The 4WD version was extremely advanced. It had some retro look, it aged really well. The 3-doors version was better looking, but too cramped inside. It good replaced by the RVR, which didn't make sense. Sometimes would go after floodings to visit the clients, the water on one occasion over the bonnet, fortunately the engine didn't stop. Sand and also rocks were no problem at all. It had some kind of locking differentials. Wish I had one now in Canada, I think it would do great on ice and snow too. The Jimny has a much smaller engine and far less advanced 4WD system. The 4WD on the io can be left engaged permanently, where it has great grip on rain, though it felt heavier and on fuel too. Consumption was higher than a typical 2.0 car of the time (406 for example), but not so bad with the manual version. While less comfortable than a car, it was still reasonably good. Unlike the Jimny and the Vitara, the Montero io was monocoque construction.

Here in Japan you can afford to scrap a 20-year-old car and the first sign of trouble. As example, at 100,000 km (or soon after) when the timing belt change is due, it's straight up the scrapyard where scrapping is free. Rust in not such an issue because in this part of the Japan Alps they don't use salt in the roads in winter, only grit. Over on the Japan Sea side they use salt, so avoid auction sourced cars from this part. The cars I get are all two-wheel drive (rear) switchable to 4WD. But diff-lock is what you really need for compressed up-hill snow. Had half a dozen, never paid more than a grand. Better, stronger wheels that yours. Jack, the Japan Alps Brit

I've just bought One of these for my channel! already posted the 1st impressions review, and found some rust issues in places you mentioned, but over all a great looking car, great budget Jeep. I'll be doing 2 more video's on the Pinin including "trying" to get a new MOT sorted after 3 Years (could be interesting) and a drive along final thoughts 😁

Mine rusted through the inner wings, sills, arches, rear inner wings. But had it all done and do love it. Would consider a Japanese import over a uk car everyday of the week as the are made from much better steel and haven’t been subjected to our salty roads.

Cheers Simon your right wings and inner wings are an issue, and our UK roads do not help! There great little 4x4s just need a bit of tlc to keep in the road

I had one of these, got it for £400 and daily drove it for 18 months, drove it to Scotland and back twice no issues, towed trailers uphill offroad no problems (1.8mpi so no selectable 4wd). Sold it for £1450, absolute winner ;) starting to miss it and am considering getting a 5 door.....

emilio gaggiottini The Pinin featured Mitsubishi's SS4-i viscous coupling-type four-wheel drive system, a smaller and lighter upgrade of the Super Select 4WD system. The system allowed the driver to select from four modes, to choose the optimum one for any particular road surface.

Hi Samuel , mileage sounds good 👌🏻 would check out it’s history on the cat N and check out the damage and that it’s been repair correct. Also check mot for previous rust issues. Check sills , top strut mounts and wheel arches for rust. Money sounds about right prices are in the up as they make a great winter driver. Good luck not much issues with the 1.8. Check services and if it’s had a cam belt. Hope it works out well for you , cheers for watching. Ross

Have you ever tried to work on one? The 2.0 GDI is a b*stard to work on. Currently having to replace an injector, Mitsubishi want in excess of £1200 which writes of the car. The carbon buildup is atrocious, and parts are a pain to obtain.

Great video! I live in Australia and own the 2.0L model in the 3dr variant (we call the Pajero iO). I have owned it for about 3 years and it has 245000km (150000 miles). It's running 29" all terrain tyres (stock 27"), upgraded brakes, rear shocks, twin drawers in the back, with modifications for camping. All-round brilliant 4wd and very underrated. I have had to replace quite a few parts and fix some major components, but I absolutely love it to pieces. Check out the Instagram account: @pajerio

I hear it does not have diff lockers, so how does its traction control work on sand and mud? I have considered it for overlanding.
