As a child of the 70s, I remember when these were new. I don't remember them being so sketchy, but that's probably the naivety of youth. Things changed for the better when we got a Z50 though & the Trail 70 was like getting a Ferrari to my brothers & I. I only rode it once. The family rule was we had to be tall enough to ride, & I'm the youngest. It was a couple of years before 1 of my brothers relented to my whining. I took 1 lap of our course & when I got around to the long straight all I wanted to do was a top speed run. I did it & when the corner came, I went straight... ....into the trees. By the time I was allowed to ride it again, it was gone. This is why I like your channel, memories. Keep up the great work.

I haven’t heard of many problems with tecumsehs they were cheap but good their vtwin have dual carbs
@GeorgiaRidgerunner Жыл бұрын
Yes tecumsehs are a lesser quality engine than briggs Tecumsehs tend to leak oil faster than any other brand ive seen tecumsehs when they develop the slightest rod knock its best to go ahead and start looking for a replacement engine immediately because it wont be long before it throws parts of the connecting rod out of the block
@DunnDifferent Жыл бұрын
Every Tecumseh I’ve owned had relentless carburetor problems. The motors themselves seem to be great when you swap the factory carbs.
@MayheM_72 Жыл бұрын
My older brother had an old Rupp Roadster 2 that had a Tecumseh motor, and it never failed. Of course, other parts broke, and were unable to be replaced. (This back in the 80s, long after they went out of production, and long before the internet.) We would ride double, and he could get air off a hill in the woods behind our house.

On the roller bearing Tecs, the cover goes on (with the bearing in it,) then the snap ring, then the oil seal. To remove the cover, remove the seal first, then the snap ring, then the cover. Pretty cool to see an HS35/HS40 with one....Out of the dozen Tecs I've owned, none have had a bearing. Tec is a good motor....WHEN it runs. Also.....for HS40 and HS50 blocks only, the ARC billet rod #6282 for the OHV Enduro engines will actually fit. The dipper is slightly off due to the angled cylinder of the OHV, but it still works, and is cheap insurance since Tecs have poor oiling to the stock rod.

6:00 One thing I have learned in my days of running small engines: MOST folks that get them NEVER EVER EVER change the oil. They have this twisted idea that if there is enough on the dipstick to see, they're all good, and if not, just add a little until you can and keep going. This rapidly accelerates the demise of the engine, due to acid buildup, followed by internal surface corrosion and embrittlement, followed by advanced abrasion, followed by loosening of clearances so that in a very short time [relative to their potentially living up to 100 years] they begin to wear out and fail. While many such engines MIGHT be rebuildable, I got hold of one which was NOT [the pistons, normal or oversized simply could no longer be purchased (and now I know why the pressure washer it came on was being sold as a close-out model!)] so I simply had to salvage the usable bits off of it and put it in my scrap aluminum collection. Other much older engines by said manufacturer can still be purchased, and I was given one such engine [because the owner thought it had locked up, but it turned out that ONLY the pull cord was locked up, so I found some replacement parts for that and will be assembling it eventually when I have time] that I can use for the same pressure washer, but which is slightly more powerful. I have already thoroughly gone through said engine, and while in storage, I have intentionally had it full of ATF, which, as some of you may know, has dispersant and detergent additives, making it a perfect slow soaking solvent to remove decades of corrosion and carbon buildup. That way, when I go back together with it, I will put some high zinc and molly additive in it, and give it a gentle RE-break-in period to kinda fill in any tiny little voids I can before putting it back into service. As it is, in my opinion, too small for a performance engine, AND I need my pressure washer back in the worst way, I'm going to leave it to that job. I have two 8 hp Briggs, one 8 hp Honda [original] one ten hp Tecumseh laying around for such ideas. And, over time, I will probably come up with more.

I've seen the snap-ring on the case bearing before from a company that used to remanufacture the small blocks many years ago.

I'd imagine that it would be possible for a machine-shop to put a bushing into the block and save it. Granted, the hole for the governor shaft would need bushed too, and there might be other damage from all that metal and silicone floating around in there. Still, might be a worthwhile block to keep around for experimental builds/mods.

I never liked these engs when I was working in the lawn and garden field in the 80's and up to 97 . You always had to have the coil rotated because of variable timing before you could set the points . Also they all would blow valve seats . For as the bearing in the side cover . I never seen one out of 200 or more mother rebuilds over time for that make and model. It might have been a modifications for carting and mini biking. If it wasn't call a industrial grad engin . You could still put replacement bushings in the block but may not be able to find them anymore . I haven had any luck lately the last bushing kit I installed was in 2002 on a tiller engine

To remove that side cover, you have to first remove the crank seal. Wood screws and a prybar work best. Then remove the c-clip on the bearing. When you reassemble, you have to replace the seal. It's an ingenious design but it's a PITA to deal with. The Tecumseh HS50 engines with the side bearings are extremely good engines and it's worth fixing.
