So how about THIS match up?!??! 1970 was a great year for muscle cars, and these 2 are a prime example. I think that Chevelle is a little underrated at 350 horsepower, and that W30 can really move!

Both awesome rides but id take the 442 if I had to choose one. Always thought the Buick GS/GSX and Oldsmobile 442 were the best looking of the 1970-72 GM A-Bodies and also more rare than the Chevelle SS and GTO. And the 70 442 W-30 is probably my favorite Oldsmobile ever made. I always liked the 66-67 and 68-69 Chevelle SS body style better than the 70-72. I'd take a 69 Chevelle COPO 427 over any other Chevelle...even a 70 LS6

same here, i prefer the street torque over revy horsepower. 1970 and 1972 olds cutlass look the best of the '70 muscle car. I say 69 mustang boss look the best for 1969. I also like the buick GS stage 1 & 2. Olds and buick combine sport performance and luxury styling in 1 package.

Bought a used 1969 SS 396 Chevelle in 1973, 350 HP, turbo 400 trans, 4.10 posi, and on the street I never lost a drag......and I ran anything that wanted to race, including GTO's, 4-4-2's, Road Runners, Corvettes and the easiest to beat was any Mustang from the Hi-Po 289, 390's, and the 428's. Those 396's were simply ass kicking machines.

I am 65, in 1975 i worked at a Shell station in MA and someone who also worked there had a DEAD STOCK 70 396 Chevelle 4 speed with 331 gears, the best he got was high 14's at about 95 at Epping drag strip in NH on Grudge night, cost to race was 2 BUCKS!!!!!!! So i agree unless it was a 396/375 that was a better than average time and higher MPH

Both of these are awesome rides but if I had to choose one it would be the Olds. The 1970 442 W-30 is my favorite Oldsmobile ever made. Their 500 lb/ft of torque was just brutal and besides being really fast they were also a really good looking and a really comfortable car to drive and ride in. The W-30 would of smoked the chevelle if its REAL and dont forget the Chevy had 410,s I have beat many of all these cars because I've had almost every car they came out with new and original and my 70 W-30 automatic With the ow trans has beat them all with my 342 gears ,the perfect all around gear .I'm not being a wise guy I'm just being real.Ive had original W31,s w30, race cars with 456to323 s and 390 ,way to much on my last w30 automatic .the 390,a were acceptable on my 4 speed but that's that ! There is so much and I love them all but the Oldsmobile, are every thing from comfort ,handling ect! Was out yesterday ,a cool crisp day and had a friend in the car with me ,wish I had bvb a video of the day but I punched my foot to the floor at around 70 mph and left rubber not a chirp of gears,the car went to the sideways a little bit ,and the nose rose and she was gone and I j also have some good meats in the back 60 ,s i believe .thing can get scary .I always respect it or I could easily kill my self in my car

Something is up with the Chevelle (I owned 2 back in the day). No L34 ever made ran mid 13s in showroom trim. Even L78 and LS6 Chevelles would barely do that.
@vjakejan

Not totally true! I still have my 1970 L34. I still have the best time slip in the quarter at 13.86 104mph. But was never able to hit that again. I'm a terrible driver. I will admit at the time I had 4:56 gearing! Yes it mostly took the L78 to hit low 13s and 12s. Not into that with my age now so car is restored totally back stock right down to bias tires. And it for sure is a ss396 with build sheet and sales documents with original engine/trans.

What, i have been around some cool cars along my journey and being a Pontiac guy for years those 396 cars gave me fits. My dad had a bone stock 69 Judge ra 3 and 4spd, i raced it and cruised looking for prey, the 396 was the only engine the could outrun me on the top end floor. 428 ford, 351 clevland, 440 6 pack, w30 and amx 390 among others lost repeatedly at the muscle car national back in 1989. So much depended on traction, todays tires are leaps and bounds better for strong holeshots

@@matthewblank214 Engines required proper tuning and gearing back then. Polyglas tires, tall rear ends, and being limited to 3-4 speeds didn't suit engines like RA3s (I had a '68 RA Firebird at one point). I've been in cars with all of the engines you mentioned including Hemis and there were dogs and there were runners. Although I never owned one, I was always impressed with the '68-'71 340 Mopars in regards to consistency.

For sure, tuning is very big and a reason why the Royal Pontiac guys were so successful. Having the right amount of total adavnce and come in at the right rpm, gears, jetting, cooler air, blocked off heat risers, gives you a great shot at out running another non prepared car no matter what brand
