The Kia Niro Plug-In Hybrid carries some of the best fuel economy estimates in the class, and its electric driving range is respectable. However, this Kia's driving manners are dull, and its interior refinement is subpar.

My 2021 Niro PHEV is awesome! Truly the best of both worlds. No it is not a race car or a luxury brand… However, I do have driver’s seat memory, power seat, full leather seats, fantastic mileage, easy to get in and out of both front and rear seats, easy to park and drive around the city, very solid on the highway, lots of space in the back plus roof racks and cross bars. I like the regular sunroof (not pano), and the understated styling helps this very cool car blend in. I added on a block heater for winter and rain guards for summer. The regular tinted windows are perfect. The dual zone AC is great and I like having buttons to push. The dual digital instrument panels give a ton of programmable information and again… blend in. Not like other cars that have an iPad stuck on the dash… I could go on, but you get the picture.

Been driving a Hyundai Kona Limited ICE FWD since 2018 (two leases) so AWD is not a requirement for me. Having a PHEV to almost replace the use of a gas engine would be better than an EV because on those rare occasions where I do drive over 30 miles in one day, the gas engine is there if needed. This may be my next vehicle at the end of 2024.

I'm not persuaded that there's a reason for a PHEV except for people who have a daily commute that fits the narrow range of the PHEV's electric-only performance. Otherwise, it's a "regular" HEV that costs significantly more for not much benefit. I have a '23 "regular" HEV Niro in EX trim that seamlessly shifts back and forth between electrically-assisted ICE engine to electric-only to ICE-only - the latter mostly for highway driving - without the driver doing anything. The car is comfortable and reliable. It's not especially fast, at least by today's performance standards, but it has adequate power, and will go about 1,000 miles in a day with only one stop for fuel - if you can stand to drive that long.
