Empty spots in a fuse box can also exist for hidden features. Such as for allowing a vehicle to be towed with no power, by allowing the transmission to shift into neutral and etc.

Except he makes the same error almost every maker of tutorials commits. He spends 3 or so minutes giving a basic description of what a fuse is and why it is important, presumably under the assumption that many viewers will lack even such basic knowledge. Well and good, but then he immediately afterwards speaks of an ECU under the assumption that the same viewer will know what the term means. How many viewers might we estimate know what an ECU is but do not know the basic concepts behind the value and use of fuses? If anyone guesses anything but zero I would be very interested to hear how they think that situation came to be. But I guess he can't be faulted too badly because everyone seems to do this kind of thing and the whole tutorial itself is considerably better than most automotive how-to vids.

@@CarsSimplified i have a question the dash lights stop working all of sudden and they said that they have to remove the instrument cluster for 350$ ? could it be that its just the fuse box and i am only getting scammed ?
@CarsSimplified
@CarsSimplified 3 жыл бұрын
Well, that's a possibility, but if you don't trust your mechanic, you should probably take your car to another one. Pulling the dashboard apart is a very involved job that mechanics don't want to do if they can avoid it, so if they are indeed going in there, it's not something they would pick in order to put work on the clock.

I know this is probably a very stupid question, however, im looking to find out why the relays i believe to be interchangeable are not. I have a 98 f150 and I'm trying to get my compressor to come on. Ive done a lot of testing and have more to go BUT i noticed that my manual shows i should have an ACC DELAY RELAY (FULL) and an ACCESSORY DELAY RELAY (FULL) inside under my dash on R4 and R5. Well there are no full relays at all. Before i start taking apart things that are much harder to check on why. I took what i thought to be a full relay from my junction box and when i went to place it in the R5 ACC DELAY RELAY spot its loose. All 3 of the full relays under dash have no visible metal/connectors (not sure how to say that). I was going to head to a junk yard later, but i will have to wait a day or so and would like to work on it in the meantime. You said in the video that it could be from the manufacturer just adding spots or open spots for things later. But the horn relay SHOULD fit into my ACC DELAY RELAY. Am i missing something??

If it's what I can recall from memory, it's a blank/spare fuse/relay location? I'm assuming the spots have no other information and it's just a diagonal line striking through the location where information would otherwise be. Apologies for the late reply! I seemed to have missed a few.

OK How do I wire a brand new circuit into an existing fuse box? Add something new in a blank location?
@CarsSimplified
@CarsSimplified 3 жыл бұрын
While it's easier to add a new fuse circuit outside the fuse box, what you're asking about is something I am going to do in a future project (that I will of course make a video about). However, to answer your question for the time being, it will depend on what kind of infrastructure is already in the fuse box, but generally you will need to get replacement electrical connectors for that fuse box and install them (how that's done will differ between manufacturers/models/years) with the appropriate wire size leading to and from your new component. Finding the connector that is a direct fit for a given vehicle is probably the hardest part; that's the part I need to look into more.

When pulled out and inspected, the two silver prongs look burnt. What does this mean? I have a total of eight fuses that do not work and are burnt from pins but still function in other slots. Has anyone seen this before?

let's say the original amp on my nissan's fuse box is 10amp and that fuse is intended for the room lamp, I changed it to 20amp since there's no 10amp to use, when I tried using the 20amps it did work all lights are functioning. now my question is, will it damge my computer box by using 20amp instead of the original 10amp?
@CarsSimplified
@CarsSimplified Жыл бұрын
Damage to the computer (or other components) could occur, but it also might not (counting on luck for the latter). However, when a short term fix works temporarily, people often forget to complete the fix, so it's best to make sure that gets replaced with a 10 amp fuse again sooner rather than later. Whatever caused the last 10 amp fuse to pop could happen immediately with the next use, or it may not occur again for another year.

With key on or car running should I have power to one side of the fuse?
@CarsSimplified
@CarsSimplified 2 жыл бұрын
In any situation where the fuse is connected in the car, if you can detect power on one side of the fuse and not the other, the fuse is blown. [This does not apply to relays or other components.] If voltage made it all the way to the first side of the fuse, and both sides are connected by the fused element inside, the voltage will continue to the other side.
@user-dk2ot8zq1c
@user-dk2ot8zq1c 2 жыл бұрын
@@CarsSimplified I know that. The question is......should one side of the bar have power when the car is running or key on?
@CarsSimplified
@CarsSimplified 2 жыл бұрын
Ah, key on should provide power to more fuses than just battery power, but some may require additional switches/relays in the on position. Generally I would count on key on to provide power, but if that assumption is wrong, there's a lot of wasted diagnostic time chasing other things. But in most cases, yes, key on and engine running, there should be power at the fuse.

Great information. Question, I am trying to track down a charging problem. A prime suspect is an ac compressor replaced 6 months ago. The mechanic had some issues with the connector/wiring at that time. When I removed the a/c fuse inside the cab of 06 sportage, I lost all response from auto windows, (they wont operate with that fuse pulled). Is it normal or common for a fuse to control more than what the box diagram indicates ?
@CarsSimplified
@CarsSimplified Жыл бұрын
Thanks, and great question! While it is semi-common, those two components (AC compressor/auto windows) being linked seems a little odd. Components linked together on the same fuse tend to be either related or in close proximity, such as the power accessories/cigarette lighter fuse also providing power to the OBD-2 port. If there is some sort of relationship, like the windows being down disabling the AC automatically, that would make more sense, but I haven't encountered a car that does that. I have limited experience with Hyundai/Kia AC systems, though.
@leadweightguy6134

@@CarsSimplified Thanks for the response. I can say that till pulling that fuse, I knew of no relationship to the two functions. I would frequently start the ac up with some or all windows partially down till the ac got really cold on a hot day. Any suggestions for a next step?

Please, What are the smaller " Physically" sized fuses. Although they have the same amperage values as the standard size, blade fuses. My fuse box has both types?
@CarsSimplified
@CarsSimplified 3 жыл бұрын
There are different sizes with different fuse codes (like ATC or ATS) that do the same job. Why an automaker chooses to have a mix is probably due to the fuse box being designed with the possibility of higher amp fuses that require a larger fuse size, and then they fill some of those larger fuse spots with lower amperage fuses so the smaller size fuse options don't fill up completely, leaving only the large section with empty spots to add new features to later. I don't know if this is the complete reasoning behind it, though.

@CarsSimplified
@CarsSimplified 2 жыл бұрын
While I can't diagnose that remotely over the internet, a lot of cars made in the past 20 years have the horn as an important part of the security system. If it gets disconnected, the vehicle might think it is getting stolen, and lock itself (and components like the radio) down to prevent that from happening. If the horn was honking like an alarm (on and off repeatedly in a steady pattern) it may either have a security system fault or it actually detected a break-in. If it was just horn on and no off time, or random busts of horn, there may be a short in the horn wiring. It could even be as simple as a horn relay that is stuck in the on position! Hopefully it's something easy like that. Let me know how it goes or if you have any questions, and I'll help if I am able to.

I've never seen anyone put two fuses in parallel to add them together like that, but in theory, that's what would happen. You'd also be working with the imperfections of both fuses, so the slight above or below 15A on both could end up being more varied than just one 30A. I have never seen it done and wouldn't recommend doing it.

How many fuse boxes does a car have?
@904Saleen

Some have only 1, some like my G37 have 3. I’m sure there are cars with more as well. Most cars have 2 though. One under the dash and one under the hood

Nice video, but I would have added a section on the different fuse types, as they can be confusing, especially if ordered online. (The PAL line, MCASE vs JCASE, mini, low profile mini, micro2, etc.)

In the manual it says airbag/sdm , is is a 12 voltage or 15 ?
@CarsSimplified

The voltage is going to be the same 12 volts for all fuses (with exceptions for hybrid/electric cars) but the correct amperage should be listed in the fuse box (there is often a chart sticker or in the mold of the plastic) and/or owner's manual.

This is a tremendous teaching video, which I will be re-watching and re-watching until I thoroughly understand. I see one of those awesome 04-06 GTOs in some of the shots. My question is this: I want to give my two after market gauges in my 2006 GTO their own power source tied to the ignition, so they only turn on at engine start. Right now I believe the shop wired them with the car audio which is on a switch, I think to the cigarette lighter in console. Thus when I turn the audio on with engine off, the gauges also turn on, which I do not like. So one person suggested add-a-fuse. Your video convinced me, no way. Another suggested I buy a spare fuse block and harvest a terminal from it, this idea I like very much (and your video discusses it). Do you agree? Would both gauges be able to work from a single added terminal? How do I do it? Any videos on this subject especially in a GTO? Needless to say, if you are anywhere near Phoenix AZ, I would gladly drive there and pay you well to do this.

When you plug a relay in the fuse box does it go a certain way? Can you plug it in wrong?@carssimplified

I'm sure there are some out there that can be plugged in wrong and prevent me from being able to say they're all going to only fit in correctly, but most of them are either designed to only be plugged in one way, or has circuitry that forms an "X" pattern, (some four pin relays) so it can be plugged in two ways, but both directions work.

My car usb outlet still has power for awhile after i turn the car off. I want to change it so the usb outlet has no power when the car is off. Should or can i move the 15A fuse for "accessory sockets" to a different empty 15A fuse socket?

Very thorough! So it should really be called a fuse, relay, transistor, and diode box! :P

Hey I’ve got a question? Is it safe to keep a fuse out of its position and have it essentially “turned off”. I’m mainly referencing to my power antennas fuse that I’ve removed because it’s motor is stuck in a constant motion.
@CarsSimplified
@CarsSimplified 3 жыл бұрын
As long as it for sure doesn't control anything else that you want to keep available, then yes. Sometimes that's a method mechanics use to diagnose an issue. I can't imagine any vital stuff tied to the power antenna circuit but it's always worth checking.
