R56 owner here, timing chain, water pump, thermostat housing, idle tensioner, water pump pulley... reliability in those is terrible. Budget another 2k to whatever you spent on that car.

@@azzakean yes, that too. Also the ride is quite harsh and the runflat tyres don't help. Suspension and bushings take a good beating and will need replacing too. These cars are proper money pits.

@@Pawcio2115 yes, I did some repairs myself and still mine spent quite a lot of time on the garage. Oil leak from turbo was the last straw for me. Ended up getting rid of it. Mine was a convertible, so the roof gave me problems as well. I should have bought an MX-5

Did my first lap on the Nürburgring this year in my Polo 9N 1.4 75hp. I'm not sure if I ever had that much fun before :) Initially I thought, the car would feel like a snail on the track, but being my first ever race track lap, it did absolutely not.

Split screen watching JB and Goodwood speed week Gerry Marshall trophy race with the old Bscc cars. Almost as stressed as trying to watch two international rugby matches at once.. EDIT: OK, ring head on now. Chill and be sensible-ish. Always wanted to run the ring in a cheaper car so I've looked at loads as I've run it in more exotic animals that would be horrendous to replace if I went full banzai. Good list JB, and being a Honda fan I could happily take the civic type r if I hadn't already run it in my favourite front wheel drive car ever, the DC2 Integra, plus our old CRX, Kermit, so that's out. I've done the 911(a 996 turbo), so boxster is out, and although the beemer would be fun, and I've had a brilliant 535i sport as a company car, I'm not a huge fan. Personally it's grip, grip and enough grunt of the scoobie soooobarooo on your list I would go for, as I've never driven one and heard they're smiles for miles when ragging them, and I could sell it to another lunatic when I got back and break even if I didn't break the car.

@@tollyt7465 haha a much more measured response - for the ring I think the Scoob would be the best all rounder, I think the one that would make you feel like a hero would be the MX-5 (feel like you’re going faster than you are), and the one that would put you in the wall would probably be the E46!

There's something about feeling you're a hero at the ring, even when you're sitting next to your missus when she's driving as though doing an impression of Lewis Hamilton on acid..

For a cheaper buget for the cupra. Is to get the normal Cupra what comes with 180bhp stock. Get around £600-£2000 only difference is cosmetic crap and the Cupra R has a different steering rack and turbo and some little things. But still a great car for nearly half the price.

Honestly I think an Alfa Romeo Mito with the bigger engines would also be great track cars... Problem is obviously reliability tho and the bad name they get for being basically Fiats... Also im not sure how is it in the UK but where I live you might as well find yourself a Mito in good condition with around 50k miles on the clock and you'd see yourself paying way less than expected on buying one. Ive driven a Guilleta couple of times with the 1.4 170HP engine and it was wicked fun car to drive, and thats why I think Mito would be a better option than that for being cheaper and smaller but with similar engines as its bigger brother. They offer a variety of engines tho to look on and I think they would be great track and daily cars if maintained properly.

FWD predictable handling comes up a lot in this- I wonder how many of the FWD cars on this list have gone backwards into trees thanks to lift-off oversteer? ☺ I reckon the MX-5 is the winners choice on this list for a beginner. For non-beginners the BMW is obviously good and the Porsche should be too. Mid-engined cars are very satisfying when pushed too. Track day car for me though is easy. Haha yeah very fair point on liftoff oversteer - but if you’re driving your FWD car properly you should only be worried about that sweet understeer 🤙🏽 I think the MX-5 is definitely the best for beginners & also just makes you feel like a hero!
