Optimism only brings peace of mind. We don't need optimism as much as we need lucidity (be aware of the consequences of our actions and inactions) and courage to change our way of lives. It's like we need to stop smoking and go on a diet. Dr. Oreski should remember that the 1st extinction we have fossil records for is the *Ordovician-Silurian extinction events (End Ordovician or O-S): 450-440 Ma (million years ago).* So, it is 5 mass extinctions in less then 500 million years, not 4 billion eh. Yes, some humans may survive, but in what conditions and ultimately, for how long? For the records, by itself, plastic is reportedly actually causing a mass extinction in the oceans, from micro-beads to plastic bags.
