I understand your struggle. I haven't really backed anything this year. I am less inclined to do crowdfunding now-a-days as I have just gotten exhausted with how most companies run them. Plus, there are so many fantastic games already out. Recently, I've acquired more expansions than new games, and have focused on playing games I already know that I enjoy. I think I will remain in that space for quite a while.

I am in the deaccumulation phase. I have accepted that I do not need to own every game that I enjoy playing. I can easily not buy another game in my life because some one will always have a new game that they want to get to the table. My collection is around 30 games now.

I saw big collections like this on the horizon and pulled the plane up before it crashed, lol. I am out of space and time to add more games. It’s now 1 in 1 out at 70 games. So many games look fun. Mostly, I am getting solo games the past 6months to a year as that is the only real way they are getting played. I’ve added a few others based on interest/hype that are non-solo, but it’s going to take a lot more for me to back anything now moving forward.

I tend to play games pretty thoroughly too. Just finished all 3 campaigns of ISS Vanguard and playing through Frosthaven in my group and tainted grail solo. I think I have at least a year, probably 2-3, on those games alone before I’m done with them.

This year has been a year of awakening for me. I made a worksheet of my backed and preordered games and it was around 30 that should be delivered within the next 6 months. I realized that chasing games was bringing me stress and taking away from games that I loves. 2025 is going to be all about enjoying what I have.

Hey Bryan! I feel you big time. I’m also in a place where I’m considering slowing down (maybe stopping for a while…? A BIG while maybe!) on backing/purchasing new games. I’m not even able/take the time to play the games that I currently own. Taking a step back to reflect on the « why » continuing this behavior which is pretty expensive. Hearing you just makes me bend towards enjoying what I have without feeling the need to own more. Maybe cull a little while I’m at it. Thanks for sharing your thoughts man! Love your content and channel! You contributed to my thought process on spending less on DC super heroes united. Thanks so much 😊

One of the first "bigger" games I got when I entered the hobby was Raiders of the North Sea, which at the time 40$ was a lot of money, times have changed, but me and my son played it 2-3 times over the first week we had it and during that time we saw someone in our gaming group had also just bought the game and when we had a gaming even that week I asked if they wanted to player raiders of the north sea they said no because they had played it once already and that was my introduction to the whole cult of the new, show and tell aspect of the hobby where people really only play a game once or twice, at the time I was like i just paid 40 bucks for a game I wanted to keep playing it and I had not encountered someone who would pay that much for a game and only play it once. Little did I know how much prices would go up and how many players were actually collectors

I think when it comes to backing things i'm less wanting to because to be honest the extra stuff is more hassle to setup and use than just playing the core. Honestly when it comes to your videos I more come to hear your opinions and insight on the hobby. It's nice to see a new game, but everyone has new games and hearing opinions will always be my favorite a hard balance but I do enjoy these videos!

I'm still backing, but it's mostly expansions to games I already like, or like you said, small independent games that I want to support. I'm waiting for retail for a LOT of things now, or just passing completely. It's easier to say no, now that I've got a nice cultivated collection that I'm very happy with, so when the umpteenth dungeon crawl goes live I can ignore it. Usually.

As others have said previously (I can't remember when I first heard it) - collecting board games and playing board games are two separate hobbies. I still struggle with the desire for shiny objects and flashy bits of plastic & cardboard, but I've been back far less also. Excellent video, well done!

I mostly backed expansions this year of games I already like with the intention to even slow things down even more next year. It comes to a point where it almost feels like you receive more games than the time you have to learn and play them. At this point in my backing journey, I just want to spend more time playing what I already know and like vs trying to get interested in new shiny games.

I'm at the tailend myself. I've backed and bought so many boardgames its starting to take up living space. And though I'd like to get to play them more the facts of life are simple that most people don't have time to play as often as we did back in the days and over half my collection hasn't even been played at this point. I've decided to simply stop buying and backing from this point on and will only keep up with my two passion games - Arkham Horror LCG and Sorcerer.

Ive stopped backing games on game found and kickstarter until I actually get some delivered. I think there are 5 or so I’m waiting on delivery. It’s easy to get hyped for new games, but when it then takes a year + for it to finally be delivered and you play it a handful of times, you just don’t get the value you are looking for.

I spent my first year in the hobby (this past year) buying and backing and I think I'll land somewhere around 78 games and ... well I could do the maths, but lets just say it's several thousand euro ... as I'm not a creator and will likely drift away from this hobby in the next couple of years I have imposed a no-buy for 15 months which is about how long it will take to play all the games I've got coming - at least 3 full campaign games in there, and others which are narrative in some way.... so I'm making a list of everything I'm liking the look of and we'll see what happens in January 2026... [even the biggest hyped campaigns will be available second hand on BGG market place... I don't think making money back on games is going to be a thing anymore... ]
@GameBrigade

Yeah agreed. The market has died for quite a bit, most games don't even break even anymore.

I'm in a different position in my group as I'm the main source for new games. Other member will buy 1-2 games per year, but I'm up to 12 new retail/crowdfunded games for 2024 (at an average of ~$21/game). This is down from the 30+ games each year 2021-2023. So I'm definitely in the, "Stop buying, start playing" phase. I think part of "buying everything" in the previous 3 years was, I didn't know what type of games I, nor the group, liked. We mostly have all that figured out, so I have stopped buying/backing games so we can play the games I/we like. Personally sitting at ~130 games atm. Enough to play 1-2x weekly and never run out of fun!

I'm backing a lot less as well. Started in the hobby about three years ago so about a year to 1 months ago games started to arrive and now I'm buried in these huge experiences. I love it, but I just don't see the need to back as much as I used to. Also considering that I still have about 10 projects that have yet to deliver. I will probably back 3 or 4 projects this year and selling as much next year when and finish these huge campaign games with narrative that are less repayable. I think that buying less and enjoying what you already have is more sustainable can keep you in the hobby for a long time.

Very limited on what I back now because of Mythic. I’m at a point I would rather wait till a game is delivered and read some review even if it means paying EBay prices to get it.

I honestly would not want to be a creator for any of my hobbies because I don't want my chill/fun time to become work. I want to play as much of each game I have to enjoy them all and would hate to pack a game up after 3 sessions to move on to something else. That would bug the hell out of me. I tip my hat to people like you Brian for being able to deal with that. Respect 👊

The struggle for this hobby is real. The volume of games is enormous and the Fomo is unfortunately real. The difference with video games, you can wait and buy it later as it will be available and cheaper. Board games are just not as easy. Tabling games multiple times is key because we all want to play new games all the time.
@GameBrigade
@GameBrigade 6 күн бұрын
Video games also take up nearly zero space depending on how you store them. The clutter is a huge issue for me.
@brianl6151
@brianl6151 6 күн бұрын
@GameBrigade agreed! Same here. I am a movie and video game collector and it does take a fraction of the board game space. That said, I let this hobby overtake me, my collection is now over 750 games which is insane as I will never play many of these because of time and responsibilities (kids). I probably have 75% of them still sealed in case I want to sell them.

I have always liked your channel and style. I think I fit into both of your camps, but care less about crowdfunding now. Still, if there is something really exciting I’d want to know about it. But hobby hangout is fine. Especially if I can engage while doing dishes, etc.

First timer here. I kind of feeling like a fool, coming so late to this hobby in my life. Enjoying passionate stories of content creators telling about crowdfunding and me falling for FOMO hard. It started with Nemesis Retaliation which of course hasn't even come out yet. I recently got my hands on the deluxe edition of Ra, but now was even considering backing the Pharoah edition or acrylic. Why? So now, within one year, I'm at this tipping point. Cancelled Grimcoven because I think I'll enjoy the mini's but never actually will get that to the table (or at least don't know enough about the game to warrant it). I think (hope?) Cyberpunk will be my last big game...
@GameBrigade

Seems like you caught earlier than most. 2020 was a bad year for me crowdfunding wise. So many $300 pledge games that I eventually had to sell because I needed space/didn't have the time.

Most games are trash, I still back ~5-10 games a year. But get a lot of repeat plays and don't back anything with any intention to let it sit in shrink / resell. I am very judgemental and get easily annoyed by games though so can sniff out the trash (for me).
