This was a really cool concept for an 80's cartoon, and definitely something ahead of it's time given how it had an overarching plot rather than an episodic format like most 80's cartoons were, among other things. I would love to see this and a number of other 80's cartoons make a comeback, even though it might not happen for this since it's not something well-established like Transformers or TMNT, not to mention the reputation of action cartoons being cancelled a lot this decade.

When i was young, I had Saw Boss and Terror Tank. My brother had KO Kruiser. Sooo much you could customize between the toys. It taught me the word chassis, though I misprounounced it. KO Kruiser came with a 4-wheeled chassis, while the other two had 3 wheels, and you could switch between them. We had a lot of fun with them and even mixed some of the play with our MASC, Transformer, and GI Joe toys. As for the show, it was rarely available locally and I only saw the commercial a couple times long after we got the toys. Probably was a good thing.

I think it's a combo between Star Wars and Ulysses 31 that was a success earlier in the 80s. Rob, I'm surprised you haven't reviewed Ulysses 31 yet. It was huge in many countries, had an excellent 80s theme song, and is a real cartoon classic. I know it was shown in the US, among many countries. It's only one season and all episodes are available on KZbin in a very high quality. It would be awesome to hear your take on it. Take care and hope to see more videos from you soon!

If Audric had both medallions, why didn't he put them together himself instead of having the stupid robot take it across the galaxy to give it to his son so HE could come all the way across the galaxy so they can put it together?

Mattel needs to give this IP another chance. It has so much potential. Not only for a reboot series, but maybe even a live action film.

The theme music to that show is awesome, and the plots to those shows were weird, and did remind me of Star Wars too🤔.

Sonic Underground also did the whole trying to find someone and just missing them. I found it frusterating too. Regardless you piqued my interest in this I would like to own it lol. Kind of reminds me of Thundercats a bit. I also did kind of see it had an anime-esque style. That's really cool!

Reason the plot was so good and was linear rather than episodic was the outline and 13 episodes was written by J. Michael Straczynski of Babylon 5 fame! He knew how to write a space opera. This was as he was coming off writing He-Man and She-Ra and just before he became the script editor for The Real Ghostbusters.

3:48 Turn into vehicles? Wouldn't it make more sense for the monster-minds to have the ability to assimilate technology instead? That would better explain the metallic appearance of their vehicle forms & make for more intimidating villains.

The thing with the roots was explained in the show but blink and you will miss it, they are the original unaltered roots of the plant Sawboss mutated from, pure gene seed if you will. Them evolving into sentient creatures was because he had already created Flora as an experiment from the root stock.

I remember watching the intro this show as a kid, and thinking it rocked. However, I'll be the first to admit I don't remember jack shit about the actual show; apart from the theme song and intro that you showed. Anyways, great review man.

I do not know about you, but the art style in this series resembles very much another DIC Entertaiment cartoon, Little Mermaid. The concept resembles a kind of M.A.S: K, ThunderCats and He-Man fusion. And the exciting thing in itself, although I am a 26-year-old, I kind of like to get to know this series. If this ever in the same way as the Voltron reboot, so I'm definitely watching it immediately. Hopefully Theme Song would be the same.

OHHHH, I get it! A boy, and an old wise man getting a ride from a space mercenary. 'DIS IS 'STAR WARS'! I have to wonder if Lucas ever threatened legal action towards DIC over this show. I've never watched it personally, but I'm shocked at how much it cribs off of 'Star Wars'. Also, I'm shock at how many flaws there are in the animation, and voice syncing, I know DIC was starting to get cheap, and lazy by the mid 80's, but they were never THIS lazy on 'Inspector Gadget', and 'Heathcliff's first seasons.

Try to remember that when you're job is selling merchandise via a television show, sometimes things like plot and acting suffer for the sake of pushing product. Yes, the action was generic and the acting honestly wasn't even good enough to be called subpar but that was par for the course at that time.

True. Animation is very inconsistent even for DiC standards. This makes M.A.S.K look consistent. (And that show is also rather inconsistent in animation)

I used to like this a lot. When rewatching it I realized how misleading intro's could be. The actual show is sloppily put together and slooow. It may have worked as a sci-fi cartoon for kids back then but boy has it aged poorly.

If that series was originally an anime adapted for use in the US see what its japanese name was. it could be the series was continued in japan. Transformers G1 had a much longer life in japan for example. they picked up the rights and continued making more episodes long after the US 4th season was done.
