It’s no secret that Cartoon Network has seen better days and needs to be SAVED! So many of their projects have gotten cut short, cancelled and even wiped from streaming in recent years. And as I’ve discussed numerous times the last year, Cartoon Network Studios no longer exists as their remaining employees now share a roof with Warner Bros Animation in a NEW building. But the new Adventure Time series Fionna and Cake has left me feeling pretty optimistic, especially with all the attention it’s been getting. This is the most eyes a Cartoon Network series has had on it in literal years, either since Distant Lands or Steven Universe Future. And while there are eyes on it, I wanna look at how they can reinvent the Cartoon Network brand as a whole, so they can reclaim their title as the king of cartoons!

The idea to reboot kids shows for an adult audience is a novel idea, but it can also backfire pretty badly. Case in point: Velma and the Ren & Stimpy reboot.
@arthas640
@arthas640 8 ай бұрын
Velma wasnt really made with anyone in mind though except maybe Mindy Kaling. She said she didnt like or care about the franchise, from what I've heard some other people who worked on the show were the same. They were pretty openly hostile towards fans of the old shows, purposefully left out the star and namesake of the series, and mocked the original premise. They also bizarrely both seemed to make the show to pander to the "woke" crowd by bringing up sexism, homophobia, racism, misogyny, and white privilege but ALSO purposefully pissed off those same people by handling the subjects terribly and by openly mocking them; and that pandering to the "woke" crowd turns away a lot of people who dont like "woke" stuff AND many people who do like "woke" stuff hate being pandered too as well because its often easy to see when it's sincere "woke" stories vs insincere pandering. That point alone makes no sense since they purpsefully alienated pretty much everyone on that alone, they could have easily just added some diversity in the shows characters and made most people happy, kept closer to the original and kept most people happy, or they could have put in more effort and done sincere stories about racism, sexism, etc. and made plenty of people happy. Mindy and Co dont seem to realize that the series already had quite a bit of diversity: Velma herself has been white, east asian, and Jewish at various points, Shaggy has had asian and native american/alien love interests who had real characterization, and there's been all kinds of characters featured in the show that were wiccan, various races, environmentalists, one series made it seem like Fred and Shaggy might be a couple, Velma was an open lesbian in another series, and way back in 2002 they were planning on making Velma gay then too. The series was started way back in 69 with Shaggy as an obvious hippy (who are extremely liberal) and the idea of a bunch of kids touring in a van was pretty common in media concerning hippies and stoners, and the flower-power design of their van and the decals reinforce that meaning the show as always kind of progressively minded (by 60s and 70s Tv standards anyways).

They're kind of doing that with some programs right now. The recent Proud Family reboot/sequel seems geared heavily towards fans of the old show and takes more risks by touching on racism, sexism, and homophobia even more and has openly LGBTQ characters. They're making a sequel to Adventure Time that's labeled as "adult animation" so I'm guessing its aimed at fans of the original series. Netflix has proven this can work with series like She-Rah and Voltron which are geared more towards teens and adults, including fans of the original series who are now well into adulthood. While its still aimed at kids theres a recent Goosebumps series that seems to have a lot of fans from the original. Based off what I've heard on social media a lot of these recent remakes/sequels is that adults are even bringing their kids into the franchise which creates even more fans. A lot of creators tend to overlook the fact you can have a show that appeals to adults but is still approachable to kids: My Little Pony, Avatar the Last Airbender, and Adventure Time were all loved by adults and kids alike because they werent too edgy to exclude younger viewers but they were still mature enough to appeal to adults.

There's also some cancelled Hanna-Barbara shows that could be revived and given a bit of fresh paint. Such as "The Pirates of Dark Water" and "Skeleton Warriors." Not to mention bring back shows like "What a Cartoon" that new creators can show off pilots of what projects they want to do and have a voting contest to see which one will be serialized. Like what they did with Billy and Mandy.

I would love another season of infinity train. Specifically a season centered on Amelia and hazel. It is already established that Amelia lost someone close to her, so I would love to follow Amelia going through the train and tackling her grief head on! And hazel could guide her and maybe find herself as well! We could also have a couple of episodes centered on the apex, seeing how Grace has grown and is trying to help others, maybe she could be an ally to Amelia and help her as well! Just give me a good conclusion gosh darn it! Thank you for listening to my prolonged rant.

Infinity train doesn’t work like that, it’s an anthology show, the next batch of season would have been in the past,book 5 is Amelia takeover in the 80’s, book 6 would have been about a teen in the 2000’s etc. Its pretty evident that they would save Amelia and Hazel’s story for the last season, since it’s what have been build up since book 1. book 7 and 8 would probably be set in the future, for the show’s timeline to come full circle. Book 1-3 present, book 4-6 past, book 7-8 future.

It's aimed at kids to teenagers, But Craig Of The Creek had the same potential as adventure time. The creators felt the same way Adam Muto did when it came to making episodes. It could've lasted for as many seasons as adventure time, Literally growing up with the people who watch it. a Single episode, "Fire & Ice", "Craig To The Future" could lead to 10 episode series on Max or even a whole new spin-off series on the channel. It may not be as action packed or promising as KND or GKND, but it gives kids something they need.

Picture this - a thrilling sequel to Kids Next Door, but this time, it's in the vast expanse of space. Nigel, now all grown up, is still out there, going on cosmic adventures while holding onto the childlike wonder we all remember from KND. But here's the twist: the universe is in turmoil, caught in a brutal galactic war. And then, Nigel stumbles upon something incredible - a cosmic anomaly that opens a portal to the past. That's when the magic happens - a heartwarming reunion with the original KND crew from the series finale. Now, think of the tone, the vibe - it's got that mature, thought-provoking edge we loved in Adult Swim's Samurai Jack. We dive deep into themes like nostalgia, sacrifice, and what it means to grow up in a universe at war. But don't worry, we're still keeping that balance between the fun we remember from KND and the deep storytelling of Samurai Jack. This is a one-part series that gives us a fresh, grown-up perspective while honoring the KND legacy. It's a show that speaks to fans of all ages, creating a timeless addition to the franchise.

When it comes to animation industry mostly aiming for the adult demographic, As of right now CN’s future is sort of on a hiatus, I hate that they had changed the dynamic to what the network represent, and this is all David Zaslav’s fault. Ted turner’s first mission in the early 90’s was to have the channel be drawn in to every age demographic for old and new viewers, when they ended cartoon cartoon Friday’s, they were LOYAL of bringing it back in the line up of shows to be part of the CNCity era, nowadays it does seems that they wanted the fans to relive the moments of that era for adult swim but not really putting focus for the channel for younger viewers which was never called the adult swim channel after all 😅😂

The problem, possibly the key problem, is that these big corporations don't understand what they have. They have this "No Risk, Cartoons are for babies" mentality. Disney, and to a better extent, the former Fox animation teams (eg Simpsons, Family Guy) have a better idea of what people want and are more willing to actually make those risks, but if you've seen the S&P's for Gravity Falls, some of the requests are extremely insane, that you can literately feel how show runners just give up to S&P so their show survives in some form. We're not talking trivial "can you change X because we might get sued" but "kids might think this (long winded logical conclusion)", somehow thinking a child or a teen might come to the same logical conclusion that an adult in their 40's might. You know, like the adult showrunner, who didn't. Netflix has no S&P's, but they also have a worse understanding of what people want, with nearly every Netflix animation project being canceled after one season, if not two seasons. The two exceptions being shows aimed at pre-teens and pre-K's and one show aimed at mature audiences. How I would fix a lot of these problems is by having the animation studios spun off from "the big company" and simply pay those studios to produce whatever they want, one 12 episode cour at a time. If the big company doesn't want to pay to produce it, they are free to pass it another content platform, and if nobody picks it up, the studio can still crowdfund it (eg Bee and Puppycat) and then put it on KZbin. I would absolutely fund more kickstarted animation, but kind of like the "risk" problem with big companies not wanting to fund risky projects, kickstarters rely on the showrunner to have a proven track record of producing good shows, and I just don't see that as a viable way to fund something unless you were previously part of a Disney or WB studio and have access to the animation talent already. Natasha Allegri , who worked on Adventure Time, and specifically the "Fionna and Cake" episode, was responsible for Bee and Puppycat. So I would absolutely fund another show with her on it. That said, again, big studios don't understand what they have, or what audiences want. If it was up to them, WB would be milking Scooby Doo for the 15th time (the only good SD show was "Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated" out of the last 5) and while I think Disney was on the right track with their reboot of Ducktales (finally making Donald more than just a cameo,) the reboot of Rescue Rangers (film) was definitely not what the fans wanted. Reskinning one series as another (see Velma) is definitely not what people want. We've seen that before, and those shows always feels like "showrunner hates this IP"

People say they don’t like how the network is relying on nostalgia to stay reverent! If you ask me Cartoon Network had like what, 12 years to create new content? And if you weren’t a teen titans go show! You were going to get lost in the scheduling or get canceled regardless!! 🙄 I didn’t like any of the newer shows because they all looked the same had the same art style and it was just like what is the point? If every new show looks the same, it tells me they are saving money or they don’t care about creating new art! We watch different shows because of different art styles. That is one of the key points of wanting to be an animato, to find what works for you. But if everything looks the same, you lose interest! You can give backlash if they are relying on nostalgia to stay alive. But in my point of view, they had their chance, but I’m just glad they are show the next generation the better shows regardless. They deserve to see some piece of awesome history!! 🤩

Yet the time it's happening at is pretty damn bittersweet. I know for a fact David wasn't behind this, but he was most definitely looking forward to sell the building's empty space to someone else, knowing how selfish he is. Expect the building to become something like a Walgreens or Holiday Inn real soon.

Checkered past was a terrible idea, not only due to the same old shows airing, but due to the fact that they can just put those shows on boomerang, if Cartoon Network wants to fix their problem, I think they should use their old formula and make their shows for kids and adults, with different animation and writing, and genre and phase out the “cal arts” cartoon animation style, it makes all of their original shows look childish and unwatchable, it’s like every new idea this studio has, they keep reloading a bullet and shooting themselves in the foot, at this point just throw the whole network away along with boomerang

Damn, I think the part of this video that will stick with me the most is learning that all of my childhood CN shows were bumped up to TV-PG from TV-Y7. I mean thinking about it, that makes sense. How many times do people go "Jesus christ Courage the Cowardly dog was fucked up" or "The Canker sisters just constantly sexually assault Ed, Edd, and Eddy"? I guess just having it confirmed and the difference shown directly makes me appreciate the implications.

The Viz/Shonen Jump model is actually a great example. A lot of series I wouldn't have gotten into without that accessibility and it's gotten me to continue buying volumes for certain series. Now, Shonen Jump is one of the biggest names in the entire world, so they can take a lot of risk that other companies simply can't but it does seem to have worked. Definitely worth looking into.

As much as I'd love to see more reboots, they dont have to be more adult necessarily. Like regular show for example, I think adding real world casual drug use would even further narrow the gap between it and Close Enough. I think the proxy if in universe answers to such things add to the comedy and silliness like hot wings as an analogue for alcohol.

They need to aim to make shows that can be both watched by children and adults alike like how they used to the problem is that Cartoon Network change too much it is no longer what it used to be creativity is something that needs to be restricted to thrive so Cartoon Network should just make rules on their cartoons with a little bit of wiggle room so that we can get the best of both worlds.

How to save CN 1: become the norm and make a new streaming platform 2: understand kids do not watch cartoons they watch KZbin. Therefor end their drama of "we wanna stay for the kids" think about Steven Universe future and adventure time distant lands and Fiona and cake made for a slightly older audience and did better then all their "kid" shows. Combined 3: again with appeal to your older audience. I'm not asking for another adult swim I'm asking for sequels of popular shows again for the older audiences you can't tell me you wouldn't want sequels for regular show (I mean again look at adventure time and Steven Universe. Like sequels CLEARLY WORK) That's all I can think of for now

Ben 10 is legit the one series that deserves the Adult Revival treatment, Alien force was close to being that but got held back and was forced to break bens character overall and with 5 years Later and mainly Ben 10: one last time (Both fan projects) We can see how good something like that would be. and it's dumb not too do it as well Ben 10 despite being the least talked about show mainly because of it's problems later on with cooperate interference and with the overall story with the Main Series' original story not being fully flourished with Dwayne Mcduffies passing, but an Adult version of Ben 10 would be goated as hell, though it would be the most likely Man of Action property to get this treatment I believe that Generator rex would be the show that would most benefit from this kind of revival

While an Undertale series would be really good, I feel like they should take a Deltarune route with it, call it another anagram of "UNDERTALE" and DO have familiar characters appear but they're not the main focus. Undertale and Deltarune as stories work best as games due to their interaction with the mechanics of video games. Imagine a show based in a world similar/parallel to that of Undertale and Deltarune, but subversing the TV platform and having a story designed for TV. I imagine something similar to Wandavision where instead of real ad breaks, they have fake ads that contain some important lore or are important to the story, perfect for theory crafting and perfect for engagement.
