Yo Yo, everyone. Today, I wanted to take a look at the current status of Cartoon Network. So many of us grew up loving this channel, but there have been many accusations thrown at the company in recent years in regards to their programming and strategy. I wanted to break down my thoughts on the recent lineup & provide some perspective on the future of the channel. Cartoon Network, in my opinion, releases some of the best animation in the world-- so this project means a lot to me. Please enjoy!
-------------------------------------------------------
DISCLAIMER:
I did make a small mistake when going through the current lineup of shows. For the 2020 tab, Looney Tunes Cartoons should technically be there. The lists where I got the information from didn't count it as a "Cartoon Network program" because it was designed to only release for HBO Max. Actually, the only reason it aired on the network at all was for advertising that Space Jam movie that came out in 2021. So, honestly, you could even argue that there are only four shows in the current lineup.. which makes my point even stronger in regards to the lack of programming. Yikes ;/

One thing that I’m happy that CN has been doing since the 30th anniversary a few months ago is their 24/7 livestreams. These things are just a great idea. Playing random episodes of both their old and new shows 24/7. They’re currently doing a Holiday special livestream and I think it’s great and with the announcement of a future streaming service from Warner Bros Discovery that’s similar to PlutoTV coming sometime early next year, I can definitely see them having a live Cartoon Network and Boomerang channel for that service (I can even see them having other animation channels on there too like a 24/7 Looney Tunes channel).
@DizzyPunch
@DizzyPunch Жыл бұрын
100% agree! I actually haven't been able to watch many of the livestreams since I'm studying abroad right now and the U.S CN KZbin Channel is blocked here. Regardless, I think it's a great idea to push your IP on as many platforms as possible to make it accessible to everyone. And I think the Live TV service model is a necessity going forward. There are so many people out there that prefer a live schedule vs. on demand episodes (including me), so securing it as an option going forward is very relieving.

Cartoon Network feels like Boomerang back in the day where it gets cancelled shows or shows on their way out. HBO Max is like the NEW Cartoon Network where all the seasons and premieres are shown.

My main issue with the channel is I never know when new episodes are on. The schedule is so random. They should notes from Fox animation domination and Disney Channel. When I want a new Simpsons, Family Guy and Bob's Burgers I know to turn on the TV Sunday night. They always take a break from May to September. For Disney Channel I know to watch Saturday Mornings for Big City Greens and Molly McGee.

The channel peaked for me when it had World Tour, Gumball, Adventure Time, Steven Universe (back when it wasn't awful), and Regular Show all airing at the same time. The Looney Tunes Show was also the single best iteration of the Looney Tunes cartoons, as someone who finds every single other one boring. As an adult, I don't really pay attention to CN or HBO MAX, but if I were, it would mostly be for the new Total Drama and the Gumball movie, if either ever comes out. Sad to see what CN is going through, but personally I'd still call it better than modern Nickelodeon, which is just stuck on Spongebob, Loud House, spinoffs for each, and horrible sitcoms.
@DizzyPunch

Ah I gotcha. Gumball, Regular Show, Adventure Time, and Steven Universe seem to be the Mount Rushmore of the 2010s programming lineup. Also, I honestly prefer Nickelodeon's block of new shows more than the CN haha.

You are talking about the time it went downhill, it aired better stuff before 2010, action stuff like Ben 10 series, real comedy like Cow and Chicken that had adult humor both kids and adults enjoyed, Megas XLR which had both action and comedy!

If they're serious about moving forward to have more adult-oriented content I think rerunning some generator wrecks and symbiotic Titan would be fantastic or just have a classics block of like kids who grew up in the 2000 to have like shows they grew up with or shows from the '90s like Dexter's laboratory that would be nice

Tbh, I think Cartoon Network's lineup has officially feel exactly like Nickelodeon's by this point. Airing only like... 6 cartoons. That being Lamput, Looney Tunes, Gumball, Teen Titans Go, Craig of the Creek and We Baby Bears. Which is basically almost same as Nick's (which is SpongeBob, Monster High, The Loud House, The Smurfs and The Patrick Star Show.)
@DizzyPunch
@DizzyPunch Жыл бұрын
Well it's interesting because in the U.S, we haven't seen Lamput. I'm not even sure if it's confirmed whether or not we're going to get it at all. Also, remember Nickelodeon has Star Trek: Prodigy & Transformers: EarthSpark. I think it's a good shift for the channel to take a hold of pre-existing IP from other networks and put their spin on it.

UGH FINALLY SOMEONE IS ADDRESSING THIS PROBLEM!! I’ve been testy about this for YEARS! Most people have just been nostalgia blind and complaining about old shows not airing as much as they want them to, but what about the NEW shows? What about the CURRENT shows, and how the network is treating them like crap? Even on one of the teen titans go family feud episode control freak echoed the nostalgia blind take and I was like, bro, they ain’t even airing any new shows, wtf??? What makes you think they’ll air the old ones 😭

In the olden times (92~2005), the three big animation channels didn't really compete bc they had vastly different identities and were after different viewers. Disney had their own ecosystem and aimed for preschool and young elementary set; Nickelodeon was for the older kids and young teens; and CN has traditionally taken the shows considered too "weird" or violent for the other two, which attracted teens. But there were some missteps and now it seems like they just want Adventure Time back. ONLY Adventure Time.

The way I see it, the main reason the channel has been starving for varied content lately is the fact the higher ups have little to no respect for the viewing audience anymore. Case in point, Zaslav is one of those people who has (in recent months alone) made biased claims that animation is "strictly for little kids." As such, people like him feel their networks should only cater to those demographics. A recent statement from this Michael Ouweleen proves my point; where the network never started with a specific demographic in mind but instead, something he calls a psychographic. This leads me to believe the term means that CN was meant to be a network for people of ALL ages, both physically AND mentally/emotionally speaking. Instead, we got losers dictating programming choices based on focus group numbers...which is a STUPID business practice in every sense of the word
@DizzyPunch
@DizzyPunch Жыл бұрын
I've always pushed for the idea they can make a channel for everyone, even when I started watching the channel at 9, 10 years old. The last several years have seemed like they only want to create shows for the mentioned "family demographic" which pushes out teens and young adults like myself. I'm hoping, through the recent interview with Michael Ouweleen, they start acting upon this aspect of their programming.

I remember when trying to follow Total Dramarama last year, there would be multimonth gaps-- not ever explained by the network or distributor when or why it was happening. That was incredibly frustrating-- once again, being more public with scheduling and upcoming projects will help people want to watch the channel.

thanks! From my understanding, a part of the cancellations from Warner Bros. Discovery included the movie. That doesn't mean the movie won't release, however. I’m in my late 20’s and I felt the same way about Cartoon Network around 2010 when everything good was ending and the new shows weren’t very appealing to me. 2000-2010 Cartoon Network was the best for me, but new shows after chowder felt very different for me and I didn’t understand the humor anymore.

What's so wrong about teen titans go being a success? It's successful because kids(who are literally the target audience of that show) love it. People, specifically adults shouldn't try to get a cartoon show that clearly isn't aimed at them cancelled, it's just a childish show for kids to get entertained. Unless if there is something I should know about.

I appreciate it! And yeah sorry, but you must've been fed some bad information. As of right now, Cartoon Network is going through a traditional period that requires people changing studios and networks. This has led to a lack of output from the channel. Even outside of that, there seems to be a change in the internal mindset of the company with the change of presidents last year. Disney has nothing to do with the current state of the network in terms of direct control.

Cartoon Network, Boomerang, Discovery Family and Starz Family should really bury Baby Looney Tunes, Sidekick, Scaredy Squirrel, Be Cool Scooby-Doo and Cloudy w/ A Chance of Meatballs 2017 cause they nearly killed/ruined their respective franchises and CN think they worth rerunning while people are really avoiding them and forget they ever happened. Also no movie block after airing Flubber, Inspector Gadget 1999, Son of The Mask, Free Birds and The Emoji Movie. If anything these shows and movies will lower ratings instead of get them to go up. Going to consider a petition to get the 5 shows banned from airing on CN, Boomerang, Discovery and Starz in the US.

For me personally I'm still on the fence on how the future holds for the network. I don't trust WB management as they've always interfered with Cartoon Network success if you look at the history. If I had to be honest I would have cn, boomerang, adult swim, and wb animation be sold to another company so then the creators can have the freedom to do that they want. WBD has too much debt and that will affect productivity in the long run. I wouldn't mind a company like FOX Corp buy them. FOX is still investing in animation (even though they sold most of their assets to Disney). Also if you didn't know fox wanted to buy WB back in 2014 but the offer was rejected. It's very likely that if that deal went through Cartoon Network could be in a much different place right now.
@DizzyPunch

I definitely wouldn't mind new ownership, but I'm willing to give WBD a few more years. I just want to see how they roll with the new batch of shows coming from 2023-2024. If they cancel a ton of them, then that's the final straw for me at least LOL.
