Linda Berry came to my class one afternoon in 6th grade. Mountain View elementary in Ferndale Washington. Taught us some art. She told us about The Rocket newspaper that she drew for. So I started reading The Rocket. She had real red hair then SHE WAS AWESOME Thank You Linda Berry.

I was in my early 20s when I lived in Chicago in the 1990s. I religiously picked up the Reader and certainly saw her work. I'm 46 now and just discovered her, ordered all her books I can find second-hand, and began sketching myself. Inspired is an understatement.

I'm so grateful to Lynda for teaching us that we can let our brain fill in the gaps when it comes to hands and noses. I teach watercolor, and this is my go to line when students panic about drawing or painting anything new. If you color the top of a page, everyone automatically knows it's the sky. It's not as difficult as we make it.

One of the most fantastic artists I know. What she writes or draws about is profound, funny, dark, surprising, human, magical.

I'm glad you remarked on the print content along with the imagery. Her micro-fictions were able to expose a moment in such a startling way.

Great interview!! Thanks for your commentary about deification and the arts. I love that you both encourage all to venture out and begin something, some art or some music, no matter what age.

In middle school, I would try to draw trees, and draw every leaf, or try to draw pagodas, with detail, and I always was graded a "D" or "F", because I did not colour it in. Crayons ruined the pictures, because you could not mix them to get the right depth, and they do not stay within the lines. Really put me off drawing. If Lynda Barry had been around, I would be enjoying my art.
