Met JML at a con a few years ago and he was very approachable and good natured. Eager to talk about the comics he likes. I bet u could get him to do an interview

Great job and glad you guys finally got to this book, you should definitely continue as I always thought Dawn had the deepest storyline of the 90's bad girls. Definitely get Joe on a shoot interview, he's truly one of the nicest guys in comics.

I think you absolutely can do that hair in marker. Letraset used to make Tria markers with very fine points that fit over the chisel tip. I have a bunch. You can get very fine details with them. People today are very focused on Copics and brush tips and forget how good the old Letrasets are to colour with.

Got in in paperback, something that still has its uniqueness as a story, very reflective of its creator, and sometimes one of the unsung independent creators, in the way that new readers (post 2010s) doesnt know.

The art in this reminds me a lot of The Crow. Like a slightly more refined James O'Barr. Especially in the eyes and the lighting effects.

This dawn comic was awesome! The post apocalyptic world kinda reminds me of fist of the North Star and the fantasy/ heavy metal vibe is exactly what I look for. Now the cry for dawn material, is some excellent art but the material, is anger, cynical, afraid, it’s a lot but you could see a story like that coming from youth, having issue with the world

I was a fan of Linsner's as soon as I saw his work. Dawn was a stand-out book at the time and looked like nothing else on the shelves. So great to hear you guys mention Warlock 5! Please do an episode on Warlock 5 (original series) Gordon Derry and Denis Beauvais. I still have the mail-order cassette tape of electronic music by Gordon Derry for listening while reading.

Sirius would later publish Volume 2 of Warlock 5. Met Linsner & Monks when they used to hang out at the LCS in North Plainfield, NJ. Cool, chill dudes.

Dawn was my gateway into indies.. and it spoilt me for comics as a whole due to the incredible detail on every page. When the pages aren't a step down in quality over the cover it's such a treat. I grabbed every piece of Linsner I could and even made trips over the pond to buy more from NYC comic shops. My archive has a great selection of his works and I've got every piece of everything JML did for himself. I'd love to see someone adapt the original Dawn to the screen.

Another great vid! Would be awesome if you guys did a special on DC Vertigo and a dive into the titles published under that imprint, and maybe also do a interview with Karen Berger?

Nice one, guys! I always loved Linsner's art. I'm an easy sell when you've got a hot redhead, but like you said, there's some very '70s Euro comics influence there, and I am also a big fan of that. I've got the trade for this on a shelf right over there, I really should re-read it... On a slight aside, when talking about how there are women who like this sort thing, Ed and m are probably more right than they know. Aydin Paladin just put out a video where she goes over a lot of studies and data, and it seems like _both_ men and women prefer "strong female characters" who are also sexy. This is based off of not what they say, but brain activity. Personally, I put it well into the realm of "science discovers something everyone has known for decades."

I worked at a comic shop in the mid 90s, Dawn was the only "Bad Girls" comic I ever picked up, solely because of the cover art.

This has been a running joke with me for nearly 30 years as it seemed Dawn/Cry for Dawn was their number 1 hottest comic and Joseph Michael Linsner was the hottest artist in the world for like three straight years. Personally, I think the Wizard crew just liked ogling at pictures of ladies in lingerie and they knew they audience they were aiming to. But, hey, I have some Dawn issues (neither the first issue or the "sex sells" cover, sadly), some of the trades and the Angry Christ Comix collection, so who am I to judge? I remember at one point Wizard interviewed Linsner and asked from the perspective of people who have criticized his art for the lack of clothing and salacious content on the covers for how he would respond and (paraphrasing) he rather accurately pointed out that Dawn was actually wearing MORE clothing than Wonder Woman, pondered why no one was going after her comics and said it probably had more to do with the insecurities of the people complaining than his drawing anything. Can't say he was wrong.

DAWN is my crack. Has been since day one. As a self proclaimed comic art hack, yes you can do hair wisps with marker. JML talked about using Berol Prismacolor markers early on; i attempted to reverse engineer his technique. Marker, colored pencil, gauche (thin almost watercolor) and airbrush for effects At least that is what i came up with. YMMV

Dawn is good and probably makes the top 5 90s Bad Girls but the number 1 spot is always going to be Lady Death. From her first solo title all the way to the end of her Crucible mini series was high quality then the 1997 ongoing series derails all that momentum and she never recovers.

When I picked this up when it first came out, I found the writing to be uninteresting, but the art was so good that I kept buying it for a while. Eventually I did give up on this though. Kudos to him for trying to be a writer, but eventually the poor direction of the story wore me out. The reason I bought this in the first place was because I was a huge fan of Cry For Dawn, which was mostly incredible (Joe Monks did much of the writing).

I agree. CRY FOR DAWN is much more interesting and sits nicely along FAUST, CROW etc.

JML's figure work is beautiful to look at, but, the sequential storytelling is weak and, his dialogue is pretentious and unreadable. The painted colours remind me of Richard Isanove's colours on Wolverine: Origin.

Ooh I love Dawn! She's my gall, my babe! So excited to watch this 🥰 I always collect Linsner covers whenever I see them, his ladys are pure perfection to me 🤩 I chatted to him on Twitter few years back about my first tattoo (I got about 20 years ago) which was Death's side profile from the inside of this TPB - He's such a friendly and approachable bloke! Wish I could meet him in person one day but he doesn't come to the UK often enough 🥲
