From the Baltimore Sun: "The Program" shows college football players attempting to prove their mettle by lying in the middle of a highway as cars whiz by.” “In the real-life incidents, two teen-agers in Pennsylvania were struck by a pickup truck, killing one and seriously injuring another.” I remember that scene and why it was removed as well. Crazy. Haven’t thought about that in what feels like forever.

I saw this long ago, after the fact maybe, but still decades ago. It wasn't my style, but it was very Bronze Age (maybe even some of the "edge" Silver Age), just with probably a little more graphic content (can't recall, but sorta recall thinking some violence more than I liked). And it was Neal Adams. And I like the idea. There's something cool about a character based in current trends/pop culture (even if comics are usually a bit late to the party like with Dazzler and disco or pretty ham-fisted with it, like JLDetroit's Vibe). I like them. Team America, US-1, your name it. After all, Iron Fist, Shang Chi, even Dracula and Moon Night (heck superheroes in general) where all hot topic chases in their time. But these ones that never hit it even slightly big are my favorite in a way. I'd love to see a bunch of these brought back for a single team-up or crossover arc.

I chatted up with Neal Adams at a few conventions. He was great at pitching ideas that all sound plausible. Looking at some of his work like Skate-man it looks great but it’s a bat shit crazy story. Still he was pushing things forward always looking to evolve the storytelling form. Innovation doesn’t happen on the first try it takes a lot of missteps before it can find its way through. I can think of a lot of innovative that Adams did get through that improved things for the better.

It feels like something that was laying in a drawer when they were scavenging for something to publish. I have this idea that it started as some sort of cross-promotional work for a (potential) client. A lot of Adams' characters smell like media pitches for cartoons, films, toys or games. This was strongly derided, but a lot of comic shops put in healthy orders for it. Adams may have been a crank, but he was no fool.

For the life of me I cannot remember where I heard this, but SKATE MAN was a pitch for a low budget movie from Crown International Pictures. It has all the earmarks of a low budget revenge flick, and it's timing coincides with Roller Boogie and some other skate-related classics.
