One of the cool things that you may not know if you're not into Bronze-Age Superman stuff is that Eliot S! Maggin, who wrote everything on this besides the Steranko coda, was using this as his pitch to get Julie Schwartz's job and control the next iteration of Superman and wanted to develop a lot of the ideas about Superman from his novels LAST SON OF KRYPTON and MIRACLE MONDAY. I particularly like the story in here with the actual Passover seder esque Miracle Monday dinner that Superman himself, dislodged through time and space, interrupts. Maggin had a wealth of concepts of Superman as a mythic and pseudo religious force that were truly original and interesting and didn't really get touched again until Grant Morrison got a whack at the character years later.

I love the Kirby piece with Superman's face unaltered.

The Miller/Gerber DC proposal was for a discrete line called Metropolis Comics that included Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman. Marshall Rogers was going to work on a Batman book. I think it broke down when DC wanted to split the characters with other creators, but the story is out there if you search. I heard about it decades ago from someone who worked at DC at the time. Also. it's easy to take for granted that Kirby is connected to virtually every comic you discuss and nobody bats an eye when Tom makes that point in every video when he plugs his book.

I got this comic (and the Detective anniversary Issue) as a little kid and read them countless times!

Totally bought this off the spinner rack at my local convenience store when it first came out. I was a massive Marvel kid back then, and this was one of my first DC comics ever. I still remember the story set in the future with the downtrodden/homeless man who wears Superman's indestructible suit and tries to lead a rebellion. Probably haven't looked at it in 25+ years.

The Maggin/Rogers/Austin story is my all time favorite Superman story.

Elliot S. Maggin wrote the definitive Superman story in his first novel, Last Son of Krypton. In this issue he displayed his inventiveness. I much preferred this #400 to the Batman #400.

I remember picking this up : the Bolland piece was my full-bore intro to him and meticulous style! The entire issue was jam-packed with brilliant talent! On to BATMAN! 🖖♾

I've never been interested in Superman, but I might have to dig this up for the Steranko and Miller pages. 🔥

i had one of this annual with lots of artist and i some pages liked it i wish to see more of it rathen than changing so much in style that didnt get a cohesive story arc, but i find it more distracting to pay attention to the story , in the new comics but no the case in this one wich most artist in this are in the correct figure drawing category

I think the Jack Davis page is great. I would've loved to have seen him do a whole issue or two, play it as semi-straight as he could, which probably wouldn't be much. Some drab stuff in this, the Frank Miller stuff looks boring to me, he definitely was very keen on the television box panel back then. Overall looks very cool.

The Miller panels, looks like taken from DKR to me. The style is the same. An example of Miller copying himself.

Mike Grell's anatomy has always been problematic. His drawings are generally pretty, but the figures' proportions are off.
