If I may, we would say the song was written "about" Enrico Caruso. If it had been written "for" Caruso, it would mean that someone wrote it with the intention that Caruso would sing it himself. (Le preposizioni sono le peggiori!)

The writer of this song, Lucio Dalla (from Bologna, northern Italy), wrote this while staying in one of the rooms where Enrico Caruso, former famous tenor (From Neaples), spent the final days of his life. Caruso was 48-years-old when he died, and a few years before Caruso died, he married Dorothy Park Benjamin who was 20 years younger. They had a baby girl they named Gloria. Lucio Dalla wrote this song while imagining how Caruso, who knew he was dying, would have said goodbye to his young wife - the love of his life. curiosity: in sicilian dialect the word caruso means (ragazzo) boy.

Dallas was writing the words he imagined going through Caruso's mind as he lay dying, leaving behind d his you wife. Caruso was a great tenor of an earlier generation, expressing the love of earthly existence but seeing that his "song" would go on in the beauty of the life to come....

The reference to death being sweeter is related to the situation in which the subject of the song, the Italian tenor Caruso, had stayed just before his evident death. That is, this song is a what the song writer, Lucio Dalla, imagined that Enrico Caruso could have been feeling when visited by one of his young female disciplines upon his almost death-bed. At least according to Wikipedia.
@JoshTheHoffman3 жыл бұрын
from what I think I remember it was a song based on what Lucio Dalla thought Caruso would say to his wife on his death bed who he married a couple years before she was like 20 years younger than him. They did have a kid. But Lucio was in the same hotel as Caruso during his last few days. I could be wrong could be a save face story for all I know

@@ralfjansen9118 That's irrelevant, For whatever reason, Lucio Dalla wanted it melted not heated. It's metaphorical not physical.
@zontortona4 жыл бұрын
I'm italian, and I confirm the correct translation is "Melts the blood", is a metaphorical way of say in italian language (probably thanks to Lucio). the meaning is the same but stronger, not only to heats but heat so much that can melt everything.
@alessandrosilvestrin41593 жыл бұрын
I also add, as the song is set in the Naples area(Sorrento is a nearby village) and that particular line is sung in Neapolitan, it might also be a reference of the miracle of San Gennaro, saint protector of the city. The city dome has 2 vials of his blood at solid state and in certain days of year are brought outside in procession to a nearby cathedral where after a while the bloods usually melts and turn liquid. If the blood melt it will bring good luck and if not is a sign of bad omen.

Freddie Mercury is usually described as the best frontman>musician>singer and voice is just one (important) technical component of it. When British classically trained tenor Alfie Boe commented on his cover of The Show Must Go On he told "it [was] awful... technically perfect but it was miles from Freddie's [performace] - it just had no emotion behind it" (kzbin.info/www/bejne/foTYfZuMe7iEkK8 - please watch it for a minute). We cannot know if FM could sing Nessun Dorma better then LP (probably not) but we know that the impact LP could give in Too Much Love Will Kill You is inferior to the one that FM or even Queen's guitarist Brian May did (compare kzbin.info/www/bejne/eWipeIN_h6-rbKs and kzbin.info/www/bejne/gajFlIKpgpummqc). A good singer can deliver a song well. The best singer can deliver wide variety of songs. FM could do it for the widest variety of genres while LP is an exceptional classical tenor. PS if we are talking about the best voice (classical tenor), please take a clue from Luciano himself who spoke on the Swedish tenor Jussi Bjoerling "how can I be compared to him? I'm only a man" (kzbin.info/www/bejne/mKKohKd-gbiKjJo)
@Luis-vn4ue4 жыл бұрын
@@sergeymikhailov4468 I think people get too caught up on who is the best singer. It's very subjective. Elvis was the most successful, could sing country, rock, gospel to name a few, to me, no one comes close as far as charisma, entertainment, performance but, I cannot say he is a better singer than FM or LP. Let's just appreciate how great they all are!

I wanted to comment on this because of the greatness of Pavarotti, but it is mainly because of the pauses. I understand you have to do so because of possible KZbin blocks, but not to the degree of so many. And also to comment on everything in the video that is said takes away from the reaction. I had high hopes that this would have been better, but with the overabundance of pauses and the absence of a pure reaction I was far from satisfied.

The story of Caruso is so sad. He got a contract to sing in America. He became very rich and also tragically almost died in collapsed building during the San Francisco earthquake in 1906. He became ill. His contract required him to keep singing. People cruelly came to see him dying on stage dying (with blood coming out his mouth). Finally a sympathetic judge allowed him to return to Italy with his American wife and daughter. There is much more sadness to his story.

@@thd106 I enjoy being corrected when I am wrong and when I might be spreading misinformation. What is the true story of Caruso?
@thd1064 жыл бұрын
@@polenc7167 The story of Caruso is sad in many ways, and there is much one can talk about with regards to his life, so I am naturally not going to give a full account of it on KZbin. What I can say, however, is that Caruso was in San Francisco during the earthquake in 1906, but he did not find himself inside a building that collapsed nor was he in any way wounded - except for some mental strain he might have experienced when witnessing/meeting people who actually heavily affected by the disaster. It is right that he became very rich and also very ill - he did at one point, surprisingly, caugh up blood on stage as a consequence of exploded blood vessels in his throat due to his ilness, but the rest of that concert was then cancelled. People did not come to see a dying man on stage, waiting for his spitting of blood, and enjoy the tragedy of a man who had no choice but to sing - because this was not the case. Caruso was idolized in the US at this time due to his golden voice, he charged thousands of dollars per performance, the newspapers constantly wrote about him not being able to sing again with dread from the moment his ilness became known, and he was not caught in some kind of contract that demanded him to sing no matter his health condition - I really don't know where you have this from. I also have no idea where you've read about a lenient judge releasing him from this contract - this whole angle is simply untrue.
