I'm disabled and spend most of my day in a chair. I've always wanted to whittle little wood spirits like this and your videos take away all the guess work on how to do it and what tools I need. Thank you for all you do for those of us beginning the hobby. Most appreciated

I too, am disabled spend most of my days in chair, reclined. It’s spinal cord injury, and then wood carving and whittling is probably done the force that keeps me alive. I create something that make other people happy. This coming year I’m going to give ornaments to two of the nursing homes they live here in town for the clients to have something for Christmas ornaments

Thank you for sharing this! I'm a 35 year old knitter-crocheter with co-ordination issues, and wanted to try my hand at some new crafts, something completely different! I've been curious about whittling for ages and really wanted to give it a try after watching a guy whittle some mushrooms a while ago on youtube, but I'm dyspraxic and was nervous I'd struggle with a knife. Then today I stumbled across this video and it explains it so well and shows your working nice and clearly. These little dudes are really cute, what a beautiful little craft!

thank you for doing a back to basics video. I've only been carving about a year and a half and I have watched many carving videos to try to advance my skills. What I have discovered is I'm trying too hard to get good at it instead of actually "enjoying" my hobby. By watching your videos I realized I need to step back and relax and enjoy just like it appears that you do. Thanks for sharing your gift!

I would like to suggest you make a complete video on sharping knifes and gouges. I have been following this video and carving my own wood sprit. To be honest, having a hard time of it. Also let me add that I have been chip carving since the late 90's and my chip knives cut wood very well. After struggling to get decent cuts with my Flexcut detail knife i brought out one of my chip knives and solved my problem. Even though the flexcut seemed Sharpe and I had stropped it numerous times, it didn't seem to cut right. I spent some time this morning and did a proper sharpening and the knife now cuts well. The first lesson in my first chip carving class was sharpening a knife. I made all the difference in my desire to peruse this hobby. I firmly believe the sharping of a knife is key to enjoying the process..

I believe you are referring to the different angles of the v gouges, they do come in a variety of angles and sizes. The one in the video is a 1/4 inch, 60 degree true V tool. I have a video that explains the differences in v tools, including sizes, angles and the difference between a "true" v or "soft" v. Is it normal to have the wood become really chippy and splintery as you use the v tool? Also how hard do you have to push with the v tool? It is so hard to push using basswood
@dywoodcarving
@dywoodcarving Жыл бұрын
It shouldn't really be hard to push through, but may take some practice. I wouldn't say splintering is normal, but it is possible with the v tool because one side is usually carving against the grain while the other is carving with the grain. I explain this more in my video on v tools along with some tips for making clean cuts.
