Doug, I'm addicted to carving gnomes and in the past month I've carved maybe 40 of these little buggers using your methods and style...until yesterday, sir. I got a little over confident and well, cocky, and deviated from your method a little and ended up slicing through my dominant thumb. Twenty-seven stitches later and a whole lot of humble pie, I'll take a few days off to examine what I did wrong and correct myself. The short version is I wore cut-resistant gloves, I used a razor sharp OCCT 1 3/4" knife and was following along for the umpteenth time when I forgot to make the stop cut while cutting back the ledge for the front of the feet. I also didn't remember to keep my body parts out of the way of a moving blade. My knife cut all the way through the wood, the glove and into the inside of my thumb to the bone. Ouch! Enough said! It was all my fault and as the saying goes, the best lessons learned sometimes come with a little pain. Anyways, say a prayer for me that I've learned this lesson well and for now, I'll watch until I heal up enough.

I am officially addicted to carving these 1 x 1 gnomes. In the past week, I've carved 8 of the little boogers (all new friends). Thanks Doug for your expert tutelege. Even after watching this specific video no less than 4x, I feel like I need to watch it at least 10 more times before I really learn all of the lessons you are imparting here. Again, thank you and please keep them coming. By the way, I'm a very old man with very precious time left in this world and I've chosen to split that time between learning to carve and studying my Bible. They seem to go hand in hand. Thank you again.

YES! The first video I ever watched on wood carving was your Gnome video with the gnome book. Best Video ever! I carved a dozen of those little gnomes and now you've done it again with perfection! Your work is legendary, and you just keep raising the bar for skill and detail in a one by one. Thank you for being there for us Doug!

Loved the start of the video! Very fun :D I am a complete beginner (in my first 20 carvings yet) and gnomes motivated me to start, but I'm not succeeding in making them, so I am sticking to little animals and trees for now. This one looks advanced, but I will give it a go this month. And personally, you should love the ones with ears too, I certainly do, and would be cool to have a tutorial for them as well, so we have options and learn how to carve ears for even designing our own gnomes! Great video, beautiful work, lovely woods, everything perfect! Cheers!

Doug, Doug, Doug…. I have gotten away from watching for awhile…. Started just before Covid, then some life vids during Covid…. Boom, here we are 5 years later!!! Your videos, your sense of humor… your down to earth language can be for a ten year old,.. or a 54 year old (happy birthday to me). You really are inspiring. I dare say you are the Bob Ross of carving!!! I’m not making fun. What I have learned from you and the hours that I chip away often making little more than fire tinder…. It’s, I think better than therapy… Speaking of fire tinder…. Where did you get that water heating fire thermos?? Just read a comment, it’s a kelly kettle.

I'm watching your KZbin video several hours after you recorded it. I love gnomes! I've got to find some 1 x 1s. My dad did a lot of woodworking and there are tons of different types of wood in his workshop! My mom's been in and out of hospitals and rehabilitation centers in the last few weeks. She's 93 years old, with congestive heart failure. She broke her right hip about a year ago and is still healing from it. I've ordered a lot of wood carving books along with my subscription to Woodcarving Illustrated. Up here in Michigan the days are getting shorter. We live at the 45th parallel.
